Exploring the rich, enduring companionship shared by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings and Julia Scribner Bigham through never-before-published letters, Marge and Julia provides a revelatory depiction of these two literary women’s experiences in mid-twentieth-century America.Pulitzer Prize–winning author Rawlings was first introduced to Julia Scribner (later Bigham), daughter of publishing magnate Charles Scribner III, shortly after the legendary House of Scribner published The Yearling to runaway success. Though Julia’s New York City life was far removed from the rural world of Cross Creek, the two women remained close until Rawlings’s death in 1953, after which Scribner Bigham served as Rawlings’s literary executor. In this documentary edition of 211 of their letters, Rawlings’s and Bigham’s perspectives on the world are woven through over a decade of intimate discussion and advice about relationships, motherhood, mental health, politics, art, and literature.Supplementing the letters with an introduction, explanatory footnotes, and a reminiscence by Scribner Bigham’s eldest daughter, Hildreth Scribner Bigham, MD, this edition provides historical context and prompts readers to inspect the facets of both women’s complex relationship with issues such as racial discrimination, class, and gender inequality. These letters offer an unprecedented performance of two women’s intimate friendship, one that transcended the limitations of patriarchy as they wrote their lives in letters.

Gisèle Pineau was born, and spent the first fourteen years of her life, in Paris. Her parents, originally from the island of Guadeloupe, were part of the massive transplantation of Antilleans to the métropole after World War II. Most had left their homeland hoping to improve their lives and their children’s prospects. Born French nationals, all theoretically enjoyed equal footing with the Parisian French. The colour of their skin, however, meant a far different reality for Pineau’s family and their fellow émigrés. They lived on the outskirts of the city and on the margins of French society and culture.L’exil selon Julia, Gisèle Pineau’s compelling portrait of alienation and exile, was born of that experience. The critically acclaimed 1996 autobiographical novel, now available in its first English translation, explores the alienation of a girl and her grandmother contending with life between two identities. As a young woman of colour and Caribbean ancestry—even though Paris-born—the girl is not accepted, not French enough, for her fellow Parisians. Yet she is too cosmopolitan to fit into Guadeloupean society upon returning to the island for a visit. And since her parents have virtually silenced their Creole legacy hoping to become better assimilated, she has no base of traditional knowledge to fall back on for strength or guidance as she contends with her identity crisis. When her grandmother Julia moves in with the family, the stories, the culture, and the strong sense of cultural identity the older woman brings finally provide the girl with a sense of belonging that transforms her life.Powerful and accessible, Exile according to Julia is above all a moving and beautiful story of childhood, survival, and heritage that will speak to readers of all ages.

The Voice of Anna Julia Cooper
Recently Anna Julia Cooper has emerged as the most important classic writer in the tradition of African American feminist thought. Mary Helen Washington described Cooper's work as 'the most precise, forceful, well-argued statement of black feminist thought to come out of the nineteenth century.' This is the first collection of all of Cooper's major writings, including many never before published. It includes all of the essays from her famous book, A Voice from the South, in addition to many other essays and letters accessible only in archives until now. The organization of this important new collection lends itself to a clearer understanding of the major themes and contributions of Cooper's thought, her development as a thinker and writer, and the critiques and controversies surrounding her work. Lemert and Bhan introduce Cooper as an activist, settlement founder, school teacher, college president, linguist, and scholar_a life that paralleled the prodigious accomplishments of W.E.B. Du Bois in so many ways.
Tom and Julia Davis Some Good Place Boise, Idaho
Tom Davis and his brother left Illinois in 1861, headed for the mining frontier of the West. Surviving an unusual-and unusually harrowing-journey across Idaho's central mountains, they found themselves looking out for Indians on the banks of the Boise River as they built Boise's first cabin in 1863.Tom found his life partner when Julia McCrum left her parents' home in Galt, Canada, for her own adventure in the West, demonstrating that the "Wander Lust" could infect women just as readily as men."Tom and Julia Davis: Some Good Place", the fifth Idaho history written by Boise historian Susan M. Stacy, tells what happened next-the creation of a city sometimes called an "Eden," business successes, the joys and tragedies of family life. This remarkable couple gave Boise City the land for Julia Davis Park. What were they thinking? Stacy has a pretty good idea, and tells the story of Tom and Julia with compelling detail, sympathy, and insight."Boise has for a long time needed a book-length introduction of this kind, and it has finally arrived."About the Author: Susan M. Stacy, award-winning Idaho historian, is the author of numerous books and articles on Idaho subjects. Her range of interests is broad-from the Women's Ward at the Old Idaho State Penitentiary to the formidable 52 nuclear reactors that once populated Idaho's National Reactor Testing Station.Whatever the subject, Susan Stacy's particular talent is telling a good story. Her multi-archival research pays off for readers, as she knits together the themes of her subjects along with memorable details and convincing insight into what it means for us today."Tom and Julia Davis" will introduce all Idahoans, especially Boiseans, to this extraordinary couple and to the much-loved city they worked so deliberately to build up and make into "some good place."
