Leonard Bernstein was the quintessential American musician. When I'm Your Fan: The Songs of Leonard Cohen hit stores in 1991, Leonard Cohen's career had plummeted from its revered 1960s high. Cohen's record label had refused to release his 1984 album Various Positions--including the song "Hallelujah"--in the United States. Luckily, Velvet Underground founder John Cale was one of the few who did hear "Hallelujah," and he covered it for I'm Your Fan, a collection of Cohen’s songs produced by a French fanzine. Jeff Buckley adored the tribute album and covered Cale's cover in 1994, never having heard Cohen's still-obscure original version.In 2016, Stereogum labeled the tribute album "possibly the most universally derided format in pop music." However, without a tribute album, you wouldn't know the song "Hallelujah." Through Buckley through Cale, "Hallelujah" is now one of the most often-performed songs in the world--and it wouldn't be without this tribute album. I'm Your Fan thus offers a particularly notable example of a much broader truth: Despite all the eye-rolling they inspire, tribute albums matter. They can resuscitate legends' fading careers, or expose obscure artists who never had much of a career to begin with.

Emily Bliss Gould (1825 - 31 August 1875 Perugia, Italy) founded a school for Italian children of limited means.Biography.She was the wife of a physician to the United States legation in Italy. She founded the American schools in Rome, and assisted in establishing those of Florence. Her labors began after the inundation of the Tiber on 31 December 1870, which was the cause of much distress and poverty. On 20 March 1871, Gould opened a home and school for Italian children in a room lent by a Vaudois clergyman. She had no teacher, and only three little girls for scholars. Owing to generous contributions, at the time of her death there were twenty in the home and thirty in the kindergarten.Her main purpose was to secure to these children means of obtaining a living for themselves. Among the trades, that of printing was proposed as adapted to this end, as the increasing number of books and newspapers in Italy would demand good printers. In the winter of 1871 it was suggested that a volume should be prepared by the authors living in Rome at that time, printed at the home, and sold for its benefit. Among the contributors were Matthew Arnold, Mary Cowden Clarke, William W. Story, William and Mary Howitt, Howard M. Ticknor, and George P. Marsh. The book was not completed until after her death, when it was printed at the home under the title of a Wreath to the Memory of Mrs. Emily Bliss Gould. She was eminent for her social qualities. Her residence in Rome was most hospitably opened as a place for the reunion for travelers from the United States.......... He was also pastor of the First Church in Stamford, Connecticut (1862-65), and of the New England Congregational Church in Brooklyn, New York (1865-70).Subsequently he spent several years in Europe, chiefly in Geneva, as a student, preacher, and writer; in Geneva he spent part of his time preaching to "Americans sojourning there."From 1878 to 1882 he was pastor of the Park Congregational Church in Norwich, Connecticut, and later of other Congregational and Presbyterian churches. In 1887, he was the pastor of the Independent Presbyterian Church in Savannah, Georgia. Payton Leonard has Leukemia. Several months before Payton was diagnosed, he and his Aunty M were discussing (as they often did) what books they were currently reading. Payton reported his book as "The Sword of.... Whatever." He went on to explain that was not ACTUALLY the title of the book, he had just forgotten the real title. His Aunty M and Uncle K both joked that they would love to read a book titled "The Sword of Whatever," and among them the three began to brainstorm other titles that might be in the same series. "The Shield of Meh," "The Army of Guys Who Weren't Doing Anything Anyway," and so on. Aunty M kept a running list of the titles and they often added to it-- brainstorming in person, sending ideas via text message. Sometimes one of them would start an idea (The Goblet of...) and let another finish it (... Gulp ). When Payton received his Dire Diagnosis, Aunty M decided she wanted to make him something special, so she reached out to artists, authors, and other creative-types with the list of titles. She asked them to spend 10min to an hour to create something based on a title. The results are a delightful mix of materials. Covers for books that haven't been written yet. Posters for movies not yet made. Cartoons and comic strips, oil paintings and short stories, poetry and a few things in a category all their own. The book is made for the reader to interact with. There are coloring pages and story prompts, places to draw and ideas to ponder. All proceeds from sales go to fund Payton's leukemia care.
