The Balmat Mining District in southern St. Lawrence County, New York, is a former mining site known among collectors for its highly prized minerals. For more than 100 years, it was one of the world's most important sources of talc and zinc. Because most of the zinc ore was crushed underground and brought to the surface for separation, only mineral specimens brought out by miners and geologists have survived. Outstanding specimens from both the talc and zinc mines, preserved in only a few collections, are featured in this book—many for the first time. Some of the fine specimens included are hexagonite, manganocummingtonite, groutite, calcite, sphalerite, and magnetite. With more than 200 photographs, this book is the first comprehensive description of the history, geology, and mineralogy of this important mining district.

This anthology tries to communicate some of the nineteenth century fascination for Antiquity- the way it was evident in historical fiction, paintings and historical texts of the period - to a modern audience. When the interest faded and the old classics vanished from school books, the world was left with the impression that this past attraction to Antiquity was founded on obsessions with meters and grammar, and languages that were no longer spoken. But in the world of Ancient Greece & Rome, the Victorian school boy found much entertainment, including both violence and eroticism. And past educators, writers and artists displayed an enthusiasm that was later ignored. The book also includes some primary sources, such as the letters of Seneca, poetry by Catullus and Sappho. The book was compiled by Michael Henrik Wynn, the editor of Historyradio.org

Bennettin laajaan Dramaattinen universumi -kirjasarjaan. Kirjasarjan neljä osaa, jotka on kirjoitettu vuosien 19561966 aikana, käsittää kaikkiaan 1667 tekstisivua.Uudistuva maailmankuva koostuu kysymyksistä ja vastauksista, jotka selventävät Bennettin tärkeimpiä ideoita kuten ajan kolmea laatua, sattumanvaraisuuden universaalisuutta, ihmiselle varattua korkeata sallimaa sekä ihmiskunnan kohtaloa ohjaavia ja korjaavia korkeita älyolentoja.Teoksen toinen osa on kooste Marian Kaminskin laatimasta Dramaattinen universumi -kirjasarjan sanastosta.
Italian Constitutional Justice in Global Context

Italian Constitutional Justice in Global Context is the first book ever published in English to provide an international examination of the Italian Constitutional Court (ItCC), offering a comprehensive analysis of its principal lines of jurisprudence, historical origins, organization, procedures, and its current engagement with transnational European law. The ItCC represents one of the strongest and most successful examples of constitutional judicial review, and is distinctive in its structure, institutional dimensions, and well-developed jurisprudence. Moreover, the ItCC has developed a distinctive voice among global constitutional actors in its adjudication of a broad range of topics from fundamental rights and liberties to the allocations of governmental power and regionalism. Nevertheless, in global constitutional dialog, the voice of the ItCC has been almost entirely absent due to a relative lack of both English translations of its decisions and of focused scholarly commentary in English. This book describes the "Italian Style" in global constitutional adjudication, and aims to elevate Italian constitutional jurisprudence to an active participant role in global constitutional discourse. The authors have carefully structured the work to allow the ItCC's own voice to emerge. It presents broad syntheses of major areas of the Court's case law, provides excerpts from notable decisions in a narrative and analytical context, addresses the tension between the ItCC and the Court of Cassation, and positions the development, character, and importance of the ItCC's jurisprudence in the larger arc of global judicial dialog.

The Welfare of Cattle

The Welfare of Cattle

Animal welfare is attracting increasing interest worldwide, but particularly from those in developed countries, who now have the knowledge and resources to be able to offer the best management systems for their farm animals, as well as potentially being able to offer plentiful resources for companion, zoo and laboratory animals. The increased attention given to farm animal welfare in the West derives largely from the fact that the relentless pursuit of financial reward and efficiency has led to the development of intensive animal production systems that challenge the conscience of many consumers in those countries. In developing countries, human survival is still a daily uncertainty, so that provision for animal welfare has to be balanced against human welfare. Welfare is usually provided for only if it supports the output of the animal, be it food, work, clothing, sport or companionship. In re- ity, there are resources for all if they are properly husbanded in both developing and developed countries. The inequitable division of the world’s riches creates physical and psychological poverty for humans and animals alike in many parts of the world. Livestock are the world’s biggest land user (FAO, 2002) and the population is increasing rapidly to meet the need of an expanding human population. Populations of farm animals managed by humans are therefore increasing worldwide, and there is the tendency to allocate fewer resources to each animal.

The hereditary retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa (RP), which affects 1 in 3,500 people worldwide, is the most common cause of registered visual handicap among those of the working age in developed countries. RP is a highly variable disorder where patients may develop symptomatic visual loss in early childhood, while others may remain asymptomatic until mid-adulthood. Most cases of RP segregate in autosomal dominant, recessive or X-linked recessive modes, with approximately 41 genes being implicated in disease pathology to date (RetNet). The extensive genetic heterogeneity associated with autosomal dominant RP (adRP) is an undisputed hindrance to the development of genetically based therapeutics.
Social Class and the Treatment of Alcoholism

Social Class and the Treatment of Alcoholism

pokkari
Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries alcoholism was seen largely as a vice of the poor and its treatment rested almost entirely with the missions and the workhouse. The theory that alcoholism is a disease that can affect anyone regardless of social position is by no means universally accepted even today. Although in the last twenty-five years there has been a rapid increase in the number of public institutions for the treatment of alcoholics, the possibility remains that class status still influences the diagnosis and care they receive. This study observes a sample of patients of a public clinic, from their source of referral for treatment to termination of therapy, to determine the influences of class position on the therapy used in each case. The findings indicate that specific treatments are assigned along class lines. The authors of this study offer a number of necessary recommendations which ask for a more rational link between therapy and diagnosis than is currently evident in clinical practice. This is an extremely important and topical study, the findings of which are applicable beyond the treatment of alcoholism to the treatment of all behavioural disorders.
Tackling Health Inequalities Since the Acheson Inquiry

Tackling Health Inequalities Since the Acheson Inquiry

In 1997 the Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health led by Sir Donald Acheson was commissioned to conduct a review of the latest available information on inequalities in health and to identify priority areas for future policy development to reduce health inequalities. This timely report reviews the progress made by the government, its agencies and others to implement the recommendations of that Inquiry. The report also examines the ways in which the UK government has sought to formulate and implement policies to tackle health inequalities. Tackling health inequalities since the Acheson Inquiry: describes policies in relation to the Inquiry's recommendations; examines the policy context with emphasis on the content and chronology of current policies; presents three case studies, focusing on policy developments in contrasting sectors - tax and benefit reform, performance management and transport; considers interpretations of progress and offers recommendations for future policy making. This report will be invaluable to researchers interested in health inequalities and in public policy. It is also aimed at practitioners and policy makers who are involved in designing and implementing policies to tackle health inequalities.

The lecture courses of the CIME Summer School on Probabilistic Models for Nonlinear PDE's and their Numerical Applications (April 1995) had a three-fold emphasis: first, on the weak convergence of stochastic integrals; second, on the probabilistic interpretation and the particle approximation of equations coming from Physics (conservation laws, Boltzmann-like and Navier-Stokes equations); third, on the modelling of networks by interacting particle systems. This book, collecting the notes of these courses, will be useful to probabilists working on stochastic particle methods and on the approximation of SPDEs, in particular, to PhD students and young researchers.
