Matthew 25: Symbolic Vision - Parabolic Living

Many people are familiar with Jesus's teachings in Matthew 25, all of which are frequently cited and discussed from the pulpit. But an exhaustive, book-length study of this critical chapter in scripture will enhance your understanding of Christ's message and his vision for your testimony-and motivate you to grow as one of his disciples. In Matthew 25: Symbolic Vision-Parabolic Living, the second of three books with a Mormon audience in mind on the use of imagery to explain the principles of vision and discipleship in scripture, author William J. Bohn focuses on Jesus's portrait of patterns of discipleship. Three chapters are devoted respectively to the parable of the ten virgins, the parable of the talents, and the similitude of the Last Judgment. A final chapter then explains the unity of vision in these three famous narratives in the Olivet Discourse. Bohn supports his work with extensive references from a variety of sources, including the Old Testament, the New Testament, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, the Pearl of Great Price, and myriad general authorities and church scholars, resulting in a study of Christ's insight into the true nature of eternal life.

Far too many people don't pay attention to history which is why so many people, especially in America, fall prey to it. Had they been paying attention, they would have seen "Trumpism" alive and well throughout presidential history. I have documented a few examples but there are many more, believe me. This system could not have remained so racist, misogynistic and xenophobic for so long had there not been a system and a plan to hand the "baton of oppression" off from one cracker to the next. Donald Trump's escapades and cacophonies of emotive labeling are not the first time the white male ego paved the way for the eventual undermining of the nation's political system. I am a scholar in political science and have kept close watch on these white men and their egos. I sicken when these cry babies whine and ask about, "did you see/hear what Trump did today"? I am a history scholar and therefore I've read about and studied tens of thousands of Trumps throughout American history, and millions of examples of actions generated by these Trump-like individuals. I don't whine and cry - I preserve a record so that those who come after me will not continue to continual complaining and crying about that which I view as a white male norm. I have put together what I call "Trump Prototypes" as one part of this incredible analysis because so many presidential candidates before Trump committed the same kind of asinine mistakes that Trump has made, especially when it comes to their treatment of women, people of color and others. And let me add one more note. The media is involved in aiding and abetting Trump in his lies, his crimes, his perfidy, his cowardice and so on. As a journalist I know what the protocols and priorities should be, and in my view, for the sake of an ad sale, television and print have taken what should have been a slam dunk case of treason and sedition and stretched it out so that they could create more "special reports" and the like. In doing so, they covered Trump's ass, provided reasons and rationale for his lying tendencies and because he's a white male, they looked the other way in one case after the other. This fact is a key component of Trump as a white male prototype. The media is the voice of the American system. Look at how they came after us; how they castigated and critiqued the civil rights movement, the black power movement, the black arts movement, anti-segregation efforts and so on. There were no quarters given when it came to Black people and Latinos. But this is a white system with its own rules and in such a system bad guys make the news, if it bleeds it leads and "the hand that feeds, controls." Trump is America the way America doesn't want to see itself: vile, vulgar and devoid of values. He represents tens of millions of white folks who hold him up as a role model which explains why America is on the decline. When Trump said "Make America Great Again," what he really meant was "Make America GRATE Again." As you know, to "grate" something means to reduce it to small shreds by rubbing it on a grater, right? And another definition of grate is "to make an unpleasant rasping sound." To even her mention of the name "Trump" almost anywhere in the world literally grates on the nerves of most clear-thinking people. Only in America is he seen as someone with an active brain stem.

Jung's theory of psychological type distinguishes between the four functions of sensing, intuition, thinking and feeling. This book uses type theory to explore 26 passages from Matthew's Gospel as they appear in the Revised Common Lectionary. The insights gained provide an invaluable resource for teachers and leaders, as well as a key tool for personal meditation. The Theory has profound implications for Christian leaders, who need to nurture all four psychological types in their congregations, and also for how individual Christians meditate on scripture to nourish their whole selves. The Personality Type and Scripture Series covers all three Gospels in Years A, B and C of Lectionary cycle. Exploring Mark's Gospel and Exploring Luke's Gospel are already in print. The series gived support and inspiration to all those using the Lectionary each year as part of their Bible reading.

Historians are still unclear about who authored the book of Matthew. Was it truly the apostle Matthew, a tax collector who was called to follow Jesus, or was it an anonymous Jewish scholar? Whatever the case, the words in Matthew's Gospel have been divinely inspired and have valuable insights to offer.Deacon Francis J. Foyt recognizes the importance of breaking open the Bible to better understand the simple truths inside, which is why he wrote Ordinary Matthew. This book is rich with history and grounded in life experience, pulling out practical wisdom from scripture stories you may have heard dozens of times. Each meditation takes little time to read but prompts deeper thought and reflection. God's word is as relevant now as it was when it was first written. Christians of today should celebrate the wisdom guidance and comfort found in the Bible and apply it to their own lives. Foyt's reflections will enable you to do just that

The Ambrose J. and Vivian T. Seagrave Museum of 20th Century American Art
A strange museum, an even stranger curator, the deceased artist who haunts him, and the mystery surrounding the museum founders’ daughter, lost at sea as a child . . . The Ambrose J. and Vivian T. Seagrave Museum of 20th Century American Art is by turns a dark comedy, a ghost story, a romance, a whodunit, a family saga, and an exhibition catalog.Through museum exhibit labels, as well as the interior musings of an elderly visitor wandering through its galleries, the novel’s numerous dramas gradually unfold. We learn of the powerful Seagrave family’s tragic loss of their daughter, the suspicious circumstances surrounding her disappearance during a violent storm, and of the motley conclave of artists (some accomplished, some atrocious) who frequented the Seagrave estate, producing eclectic bodies of work that betray the artists’ own obsessions, losses, and peculiarities. We learn about the curator’s rise to power, his love affair with a deeply troubled ghost—and when a first-time visitor to the museum discovers unexpected connections between the works on exhibit and her painful past, we are plunged into a meditation on the nature of perception, fabrication, memory, and time.
A Theology of Matthew's Gospel

A Theology of Matthew's Gospel

A Theology of Matthew's Gospel develops the perspective that Matthew wrote his Gospel to identify, defend, and proclaim Jesus Immanuel, "God with us," as the Davidic Messiah who fulfilled the OT expectations of humanity's redemption. Matthew's Gospel establishes Jesus's identity as the heir to the promises of Israel's throne through king David, and heir to the promises of blessing to all the nations through the patriarch Abraham (1:1). So, this first Gospel offers evangelistic hope in Jesus's message of the gospel to Jews, contending that they should turn to Jesus as their long-awaited Messiah (Matt 11:2-6). But, strikingly, Matthew's Gospel also offers evangelistic hope to Gentiles, emphasizing that salvation through Jesus Messiah is available to all the nations (28:19).The book emphasizes the three horizons that comprise Matthew's gospel: history, theology, and literature. The first horizon focuses on Jesus's historical ministry. Here Matthew provides for us a record of God's activities in history in the arrival of Jesus Messiah and the kingdom of heaven. The second horizon develops Matthew's theological perspective for his audience(s). Here we attempt to understand and isolate Matthew's unique theological perspective of God's activities in Jesus Messiah. This is a central focus, emphasizing Matthew's theological perspective of the Old Testament, Christology, the kingdom of heaven, discipleship, the Church/church, Israel (past, present, and future), the death and resurrection of Jesus, mission/commission, and eschatology/eternity. The third horizon emphasizes today's reader(s) engaging with Matthew's Gospel as literature. Here we attempt to capture the significance of the perspective of today's reader's understanding of Jesus Messiah's activities in history and Matthew's theological perspective for the contemporary church. In this book we view Matthew's perspective of God's activities in Jesus's unfolding earthly ministry. The alternating sections of narrative and discourse provide for his readers Jesus's example to follow and Jesus's words to obey. Therefore, Matthew's Gospel is at least in part a manual on discipleship to Jesus Messiah in the kingdom of heaven. In the six Narratives, Matthew reveals Jesus's true identity in his deeds, and introduces themes that will lead to instructions to Jesus's disciples in the Discourses. The six Narratives provide the example that Jesus's disciples are commanded to obey. In the five Discourses, Matthew records Jesus's instructions, commands, parables, directives and prophecies that will guide his followers in their discipleship to Jesus until the end of the age. Combined, the narratives of Jesus's life provide Jesus's example to follow, and the discourses give Jesus's instructions to obey, and are the basis of our ongoing transformation to become like Jesus.
The Shape of Matthew's Story

The Shape of Matthew's Story

The Gospel of Matthew, like the other Gospels, is a story. The narrative nature of Matthew's account of the life of Jesus unfolds as a plotted sequence of words and events, beginning with his birth and closing with his presence to the disciples as their risen Lord. The location of any single passage within the flow of the unfolding story is a major guide to understanding this Gospel. Matthew is best known for his account of the birth of Jesus (Matt 1—2); Peter's recognition of Jesus as the Son of Man, the Son of God (16:13–20); and the final commission of all the disciples to preach the gospel to all nations (28:16–28). But where do these famous passages appear in the story? What preceded them and what follows? The first Gospel famously highlights five major discourses, during which only Jesus speaks. How do they contribute to Matthew's story of the life of Jesus? The Shape of Matthew's Story focuses upon the temporal and geographical flow of the unfolding narrative, and the interacting roles of the protagonists within it. It traces an early Christian storyteller's single-minded presentation of God, Jesus Christ, the call to discipleship, and the Christian Church. Endorsements: "Throughout his long and productive career, Fr. Francis Moloney has published many works of serious scholarship along with books that address the general public. His ability to speak clearly and intelligently on both levels, often at the same time, is truly remarkable. The Shape of Matthew's Story is a prime example of his making academic research available to the educated laity." —John P. Meier, University of Notre Dame "In typical Moloney fashion, The Shape of Matthew's Story delivers an accessible, insightful, and lucid introduction to the first Gospel. Students and clergy alike will benefit from Moloney's careful attention to the narrative, historical, and theological concerns of the text." —Kelly Iverson, Baylor University "Employing considerable skills as narrative critic, Francis Moloney offers a compelling account of Matthew's story of the Messiah, from birth to death and beyond. With Moloney as reliable guide, Matthew's complex yet profound narrative emerges from the page, inviting the reader into a community of disciples that is taught by Jesus." —Ian Boxall, University of Oxford Francis J. Moloney, SDB, is a graduate of the Pontifical Biblical Institute and the University of Oxford. He was Dean of the School of Theology and Religious Studies and Professor of New Testament at the Catholic University of America (1999–2005). Now in semi-retirement, he is a senior professorial fellow of Catholic Theological College, within the University of Divinity, Melbourne, Australia. †

This is a true story about the gift of life. In one day, two precious children were lost, but thanks to a generous and selfless donation, the organ of one child was transplanted into a young boy thousands of miles a way, giving him and his family a hope for a new life. The Dreams of Matthew 1:18-2:23

The Dreams of Matthew 1:18-2:23: Tradition, Form, and Theological Investigation critically examines the five dream passages of Matthew 1:18-2:23 to demonstrate that Matthew employed dream narratives to defend allegations concerning Jesus’ birth and to provide etiological reasons both for why Jesus went to Egypt and how Jesus happened to live in Nazareth. A diachronic survey of dream records in the Ancient Near Eastern, Egyptian, Jewish, Greco-Roman, and Second Temple writings reveals that dream narratives fall into two major categories: message dreams and symbolic dreams. Every dream carries a distinct narrative function according to the objectives of the user. Typically, symbolic dreams appear in epic-like literature, and message dreams appear in narratives such as historical and religious writings. The present analysis of the five dream accounts of Matthew 1:18-2:23 reveals that they fall into the message dream category. Each dream has at least one narrative function. In other words, Matthew does not merely record the dream experiences of the individuals but uses dreams to achieve his narrative objective.

Based on nothing more than a long-held tradition, the four Gospels of the Bible have been taught as being New Testament documents, written for the Church. However, that is a false presumption. The four Gospels are Old Testament books, giving the factual historical record of more than three hundred prophecies, from Genesis to Malachi, of the coming of Israel's Messiah King. They are four thematic accounts of the life, ministries, and crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, Israel's promised Messiah and King. A study of the Gospel of Matthew proves that fact beyond any reasonable doubt. The Gospel According to Matthew was written to help those interested in knowing the truth to come to the knowledge and conviction of the truth, as God has set it forth. May it be used to that purpose.About the AuthorArge J. Brockles was born and raised in Dallas, Texas, into a family that became prominent in business, politics, and in the Greek community. After attending Texas A&M University, class of 1952, he became the president of Brockles Restaurant, Inc., and vice president of Brockles Food Company. In 1962 he became a Christian, left the family businesses, and entered Dallas Theological Seminary. Brockles and his late wife have two children, two grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He is currently actively writing a commentary on the letters to the Romans.
