Born in Walthamstow, Essex, William Morris was an outstanding character of many talents, being an architect, writer, social campaigner, artist and, with his Kelmscott Press, an important figure of the Arts and Crafts movement. Many of us probably know him best, however, from his superb furnishings and textile designs, intricately weaving together natural motifs in a highly stylized two-dimensional fashion influenced by medieval conventions. This iconic design was created for Morris & Co. by Morris-trained designer John Henry Dearle in 1901.
William Morris’s Socialism and Politics
Since the early 1960s, the Journal of the William Morris Society (renamed Journal of William Morris Studies in 2005) has attracted a wide range of scholars to consider the life and work of this pivotal figure in Victorian culture. During that time the journal has published nearly 120 articles, exploring all areas of Morris’s social, political and environmental thought as well as his energetic political activism. The contributions gathered in this volume provide many original insights, as well as unearthing fresh material from the archives. The lifetime trajectory of Morris’s politics and socialism is often discussed in ways that show how it emerges from, interconnects with and informs the many other areas of his work – art, design, literature, poetry, arts and crafts manufacture, fine book publishing and production. There is no other collection of articles of this type, with the range of contributors representing a virtual who’s-who of Morris scholarship. William Morris’s social and political values, his actions, his utopian writings and his libertarian socialism resonate even more widely today than perhaps they did in his own time. At a moment in history when disillusion and distrust of current politics and politicians has grown significantly, a figure such as Morris offers renewal and hope. This book allows great opportunities to reflect on the culture, context and genealogy of his beliefs while inviting the reader to revisit political possibilities and paths not taken… paths that perhaps should be embarked upon now.

In 1798 Robert Morris—“financier of the American Revolution,” confidant of George Washington, former U.S. senator—plunged from the peaks of wealth and prestige into debtors' prison and public contempt. How could one of the richest men in the United States, one of only two founders who signed the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution, suffer such a downfall? This book examines for the first time the extravagant Philadelphia town house Robert Morris built and its role in bringing about his ruin. Part biography, part architectural history, the book recounts Morris’s wild successes as a merchant, his recklessness as a land speculator, and his unrestrained passion in building his palatial, doomed mansion, once hailed as the most expensive private building in the United States but later known as “Morris’s Folly.” Setting Morris’s tale in the context of the nation’s founding, this volume refocuses attention on an essential yet nearly forgotten American figure while also illuminating the origins of America’s ongoing, ambivalent attitudes toward the superwealthy and their sensational excesses.

Wright Morris imposes his imagination on the chaos of recollected experience, creating a unified vision of reality from a threateningly indeterminate mass of raw material. This study examines how Morris transforms the commonplace, the past, and language in his fiction. A chapter on the commonplace bases its method on the Russian formalist concept of defamiliari- zation. A chapter on the past is a psychological exploration of Morris's fictional use of incidents from his early life. And a chapter on language is inspired by recent critical explorations of the relation between language and reality.
