The Stonington, a whaleship from New London, Connecticut, is sailing a course for home after being at sea for over three years. When it pulls into San Diego, California, in September, 1846 for food and supplies, it learns that war has broken out between the United States and Mexico. The town is under siege by Mexican forces that are leaving the U.S. inhabitants no escape route but the sea. In response to their desperate situation, the captain of the Stonington allows them to take refuge aboard his ship. Thus begins the first step in what would become the Stonington’s months-long tour of duty as a member of the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Squadron.Using the logbook of the Stonington as well as other primary and secondary sources, historian Peter J. Emanuel, Jr. tells the unique story of a whaleship unlike any other in the annals of whaling. Readers, including those with an interest in maritime/naval/military history as well as those that just enjoy an exciting adventure story, will sail along with the Stonington as it assists in the re-taking of San Diego, then serves as a supply ship, a troop ship, and even a gun ship for the U.S. Navy. The captain and his crew come into contact with central figures in the U.S. war effort in California, including Commodore Robert F. Stockton, John C. Frémont, Ezekiel Merritt, and General Stephen W. Kearny. A series of harrowing events unfolds when the U.S. Navy releases the Stonington and the ship resumes its homeward course: Mexicans capture the captain, and the first mate must decide whether to attempt a rescue that could jeopardize the entire ship; the ship must sail around Cape Horn through one of the most dangerous waterways on the planet; lightning strikes a crewman high in the rigging and, after managing to pass him down safely to the deck, his crewmates keep vigil as he struggles to survive, all the while hoping that they will get back home.

In industry or in education, everyone keeps bringing up the importance of problem-solving skills. But what ARE some of them? After facing - and solving - problems on a continuing basis for over thirty years. a computer scientist proposes an initial solution, one which raises an even harder problem: What is the Pedagogy of Computer Science? How can such a new and complex subject be organized and taught so as to best unify its subject-matter and provide its students and its professionals with the best tool-box for dealing with problems?Over 40 curious "case studies" are presented, mostly from real-world industrial experience. Some will seem curiously antique, but then there are algorithms still in use after being invented over 2200 years ago. Ridiculous challenges due to machine or system limitations, absurdly difficult puzzles faced by co-workers, mistakes in the most unexpected places.... And a goodly number of answers, too: Why it is so important to learn LONG DIVISION. Why computers can't add. The theory which forms the nucleus of all video games. And especially a fascinating selection of errors, cautions, and the even more remarkable errors which aren't errors at all, but lampposts to larger truths - the sort of thing only a Chestertonian knows, one who has travelled with Milo in the Lands Beyond for the sake of Rhyme and Reason, and the strengthening of the Kingdom of Wisdom.

The Priesthood of the Plebs

The Priesthood of the Plebs

Peter J Leithart

In this seminal treatise, Peter J. Leithart argues that the coming of the New Creation in Jesus Christ has profound and revolutionary implications for social order, implications symbolized and effected in the ritual of baptism. In Christ and Christian baptism, the ancient distinctions between priest and non-priest, between patrician and plebian, are dissolved, giving rise to a new humanity in which there is no Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female. Yet, beginning in the medieval period, the church has blunted the revolutionary force of baptism, and reintroduced antique distinctions whose destruction was announced by the gospel. Leithart calls the church to renew her commitment to the gospel that offers "priesthood to the plebs."
