This book concerns digital communication. Specifically, we treat the transport of bit streams from one geographical location to another over various physical media, such as wire pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and radio. We also treat multiple-access channels, where there are potentially multiple transmitters and receivers sharing a common medium. Ten years have elapsed since the Second Edition, and there have been remarkable advances in wireless communication, including cellular telephony and wireless local-area networks. This Third Edition expands treatment of communication theories underlying wireless, and especially advanced techniques involving multiple antennas, which tum the traditional single-input single-output channel into a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel. This is more than a trivial advance, as it stimulates many advanced techniques such as adaptive antennas and coding techniques that take advantage of space as well as time. This is reflected in the addition of two new chapters, one on the theory of MIMO channels, and the other on diversity techniques for mitigating fading. The field of error-control coding has similarly undergone tremendous changes in the past decade, brought on by the invention of turbo codes in 1993 and the subsequent rediscovery of Gallager's low-density parity-check codes. Our treatment of error-control coding has been rewritten to reflect the current state of the art. Other materials have been reorganized and reworked, and three chapters from the previous edition have been moved to the book's Web site to make room.

There are many valuable and useful books on electrical communication (References 1-5 are some examples), but they have certain disadvantages for the beginner. The more advanced books present some things in a basic way, but they are very narrow for an introduction to communica tion. The introductory books are broader but still narrow by our stan dards. Further, they often pick things out of thin air rather than derive them. This book is aimed at giving the beginner a basic understanding of a wide range of topics which are essential in communication systems. These include antennas and transmission, thermal noise and its consequences, Fourier transforms, modulation and noise, sampling and pulse code modulation, autocorrelation and power spectrum, optimum filtering, gauss ian noise and errors in digital transmission, data transmission, limits on data rate including information theory and quantum limits, and source encoding. We have not included communications traffic, switching, and multiplexing, nor protocols for digital and computer communications. For these, Reference 6 is excellent. In general, our book does not discuss the circuits used for communication or the physics of radio propagation. We assume that these will be taught in specialized courses, but such courses are not prerequisites for this one. Chapter 1 introduces the transmission formula or antenna equation and antenna directivity. Only a very basic sophomore physics knowledge of electromagnetic theory is assumed. The radar equation is also treated.
The Biophilia Hypothesis

The Biophilia Hypothesis

"Biophilia" is the term coined by Edward O. Wilson to describe what he believes is humanity's innate affinity for the natural world. In his landmark book Biophilia, he examined how our tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes might be a biologically based need, integral to our development as individuals and as a species. That idea has caught the imagination of diverse thinkers. The Biophilia Hypothesis brings together the views of some of the most creative scientists of our time, each attempting to amplify and refine the concept of biophilia. The variety of perspectives -- psychological, biological, cultural, symbolic, and aesthetic -- frame the theoretical issues by presenting empirical evidence that supports or refutes the hypothesis. Numerous examples illustrate the idea that biophilia and its converse, biophobia, have a genetic component: fear, and even full-blown phobias of snakes and spiders are quick to develop with very little negative reinforcement, while more threatening modern artifacts -- knives, guns, automobiles -- rarely elicit such a response people find trees that are climbable and have a broad, umbrella-like canopy more attractive than trees without these characteristics people would rather look at water, green vegetation, or flowers than built structures of glass and concrete The biophilia hypothesis, if substantiated, provides a powerful argument for the conservation of biological diversity. More important, it implies serious consequences for our well-being as society becomes further estranged from the natural world. Relentless environmental destruction could have a significant impact on our quality of life, not just materially but psychologically and even spiritually.

The digital copies of these recordings are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits Preface At the earnest request of the editor of the Free Methodist much of the matter contained in the following pages was originally prepared for publication in that paper. The writer had no thought that the articles would ever appear in book form. But as many of the readers of the sketches, as they appeared in the Free Methodist, have expressed a desire to have them in a more convenient and durable form I have by advice of our publishing agents consented to their publication, and have revised the matter as it originally appeared, adding several entirely new chapters. As to literary merit these pages are not open to criticism since no claim in that direction is made. Another volume giving a more general account of the work East and West is contemplated. In this volume scholars from a variety of disciplines address a range of phenomena related to the general question of when people behave in an altruistic fashion. The specific topics addressed in this volume include how empathy induced altruism can actually be a threat to the some larger collective good, the role of egoism in the production and maintenance of social order, the basis of cooperation in social dilemmas, an evolutionary account of sex differences in the propensity to cooperate, a theoretical analysis of when individuals experience gratitude versus indebtedness in response to receiving help, a new status-driven theory of large scale collective action, a cross-national analysis of institutional versus generalized trust in societies, and how individuals develop expectations for the sanctioning of particular kinds of behaviors. Overall, the volume includes papers that reflect a wide range of theoretical approaches to altruism and prosocial behavior in groups from sociologists and psychologists who work in the general area of group processes.
After the Green Revolution

After the Green Revolution

'The Green Revolution' of the 60's and 70's produced immense gains in food cereal production in the Third World. But there are huge problems in the 'post-revolutionary' era: farmers with small or marginal holdings have benefited less than wealthier farmers; intensive mono-cropping has made production more susceptible to environmental stresses and shocks. Now there is evidence of diminishing returns from intensive and intensively chemical agricultural production. What is needed is a new approach, equally revolutionary, but different in its ideas and style. The authors set out what they mean by 'sustainable' agriculture in the new era and look at the effects of international economic restraints and of national policies on the kind of development they see as necessary. They chart a path for sustainable livelihoods for Third World farmers enmeshed by forces outside their control. They describe methods of evaluating and resolving the tough trade-offs all levels of intervention, from international trade down to the individual farm. This book cannot provide all the answers, but it does indicate what international conditions we need to be aware of, what national policies we need to advocate and what approaches at the local level we need to adopt to ensure the goal of agricultural sustainability. Changelings were believed to be troll or fairy children left in place of stolen human babies. Morgen, an adopted foundling reared in Boston, Massachusetts, now in his mid-twenties, is the charismatic lead-singer and songwriter for Beantown Home Cookin, ' a showband featuring the Trashbabies, a troupe of singer-dancers who contribute mightily to the band's growing popularity. After a sensational live BBC broadcast of their May Eve concert, Morgen skips its wrap party to test drive a rented sports car. A squall causes him to skid into a ditch and daybreak finds him seeking help in Morningstone, an isolated village where it seems the storm wiped out communication with the outside world. In the village pub, Morgen overhears one girl argue that Fates, Muses and Furies represent the denigration of the Mother Goddess, reducing her to a bevy of bickering departmental nymphs. Another suggests fragmentation of the goddess is a device of exposition, used to reveal a crisis dramatically through confrontation between various aspects of her character.According to Fiona, the wise lady at the cottage, song and chant used to mean the same thing, and Morgen, an increasingly popular singer and songwriter, is an enchanter by definition. His songs are spells that once heard, will return, going 'round and 'round in one's head, even when there's no music to hear. B y now, music and story, Changeling's Return has crossed into a supernatural realm where, within the Tomb of Every Hope, Morgen represents humanity, on trial for crimes against Nature. The Furies seek his death. Instead, he receives a sip from the Cauldron of Inspiration, becoming The Fool, "Truth, Reason, and Magic, Harmony of the Carnal and the Mystical-Man." Is Morgen human, recognizing humanity's dependence and obligation to nature for its survival, or a changeling reared by humans, reawakening to his supernatural origins, and if the latter, what impact will Changeling's Return have on the human race? As the Trashbabies sing in their exit song, "Dog, Roebuck, and Lapwing, your nonsense song makes my ears ring. Between the lines I hear you sing."
