The universe has the resources to create conscious beings with cognitive powers. We are the living proof. But what if these resources are limited in such a way that the universe cannot create a being with sufficient cognitive powers to fully comprehend any corporeal object-not acorns or water molecules, let alone intelligent animals. Quadrants of the Corporeal: Reflections on the Foundations of Experience presents reasons to believe that precisely this is the case, and explains why this cosmic fact makes "the mind-body problem" or "the hard problem of consciousness" impossible to solve. No being that this universe can make can understand what makes conscious beings conscious.

This symposium is the third in a series featuring the propaga tion of higher plants through tissue culture. The first of these symposia, entitled "A Bridge Between Research and Application," was held at the University in 1978 and was published by the Technical Information Center, Department of Energy. The second symposium, on "Emerging Technologies and Strategies," was held in 1980 and pub lished as a special issue of Environmental and Experimental Botany. One of the aims of these symposia was to examine the current state of-the-art in tissue culture technology and to relate this state of technology to practical, applied, and commercial interests. Thus, the third of this series on development and variation focused on embryogenesis in culture: how to recognize it, factors which affect embryogenesis, use of embryogenic systems, etc.; and variability from culture. A special session on woody species again emphasized somatic embryogenesis as a means of rapid propagation. This volume emphasizes tissue culture of forest trees. All of these areas, we feel, are breakthrough areas in which significant progress is expected in the next few years.
Nazis, Time Travel, and a Tuskegee Airman who won't quit"Don't argue with me, Sam. Look where you are. You're on a Luftwaffe starship. I assure you, the United States gives up on the war."By April 1944, Allied victory in World War II was a foregone conclusion. Roosevelt and Churchill would accept nothing less than unconditional surrender. Giving up was out of the question. Defeat was impossible.Lt. Sam McHenry, a black American fighter pilot, was about to see a lot of impossible things. Presumed dead after crashing into the sea, McHenry awakens aboard a Nazi starship from the future. They tell him the war will end very soon, and how the entire world will one day be ruled by the Nazi regime. And then he learns the worst news of all: The Allies did not simply lose. They gave up.Hitler once said the Third Reich would stand for one thousand years. But McHenry knows that if Nazis could rule for one thousand years, they will rule forever. Sam McHenry will not let that happen.
