A Journey to Softness

A Journey to Softness

Mark Rashid

Trafalgar Square
2016
nidottu
Internationally acclaimed horse trainer Mark Rashid shares and analyzes the remarkable events, quiet moments, and humbling stumbling blocks that--looking back--he can identify as significant in his personal journey to finding -softness- with both horses and people. -Softness, - via what many in the horse world today might refer to as -feel, - begins, Rashid says, with one simple truth: -It's not about what we do that starts us on the path to softness, but rather, it's what we don't do.- Softness is having the sensitivity we need in order to feel when and if the horse tries to -give.-It is about developing the kind of awareness and feel it takes to know when we are working against our horses, rather than with them. In these forthright stories, readers get a glimpse of a life that has produced a man known for his ability to solve difficult problems with communication rather than force, as well as methods and techniques gleaned from decades of work with horses, horse people, and the -way of harmony- through the martial arts.
The Anti-Feminist Final Girl Trope

The Anti-Feminist Final Girl Trope

This book is an exploration of the Final Girl trope and the overall treatment of women in John Carpenter's 1978 smash-hit slasher film Halloween, its sequel, Halloween II (1981), and David Gordon Green's newest Halloween trilogy (2018-2022). I argue that the treatment of women in the first two films of the Halloween franchise are bogged down by Susan Faludi's concept of the backlash against American women in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, and that the Final Girl trope strips Halloween's Laurie Strode of her femininity, replacing it with masculinity despite the trope's gendered name. David Gordon Green's Halloween trilogy, on the other hand, released from 2018 through 2022, is punctuated by the MeToo movement in Hollywood and actively reverses the anti-women hatred seen in the first two films of the franchise, restoring Laurie Strode's femininity through her role as a caretaker, mother, and guardian of her daughter and granddaughter.

My analysis is focused on the visual and sexual politics of the media coverage and public response to the military sex scandal commonly referred to as Abu Ghraib within a neoliberal context. The purpose of this project is to address a gap in current academic scholarship regarding the sexual and visual politics of neoliberalism. With an emphasis on the role of the state in the regulation and policing of public discourses of sexuality, I apply an analysis of the production and consumption of sex scandals in the United States to interrogate the relationship between sexual and visual politics of neoliberalism. Specifically, I analyze the ways in which desire, taboo and fantasy are policed in media coverage and public reaction to the Abu Ghraib military sex scandal in an effort to understand how sex scandals function in a public culture of sex.

Military sexual assault has plagued the institution and incidents of sexual harassment and assault continue to rise annually. Although the increasing statistics are partly due to an influx of assault victims coming forward or utilizing a secondary reporting option, military sexual assault prevails due to social and institutional manipulation. Previous studies in the book have investigated the phenomena of military sexual assault and have found that the main factors of social and institutional manipulation relate to victim-blaming attitudes and problematic criminal investigations. Yet, various studies in the book primarily report on statistics, risk factors, and negative effects of military sexual assault. Therefore, there is scant research that focuses on the victim/survivor perspective of military sexual assault. Moreover, few studies have utilized social media platforms like Twitter and the different variations of the #MeToo movement (e.g., #MeTooMen or #MeTooMilitary) to analyze sexual assault-related data from the survivor perspective.

Geography of Bangladesh

Geography of Bangladesh

In its struggle for independence, Bangladesh became the focal point of world attention in the early 1970s. It emerged victorious, but its development was hindered by the after-effects of the war—the destruction of much of its infrastructure, problems of governmental change, and the enormous difficulties faced by government and aid officials in assembling a data base for long-range planning. Professor Rashid's book—the first major comprehensive geographic inventory of Bangladesh—provides the key elements for such a base. Emphasizing the rural and agricultural characteristics of the country, it also covers in depth its physiography, hydrography, climate, soils, land utilization, migration and settlement patterns, transportation infrastructure, and human and natural resources.

Prosecutorial Discretion in the International Criminal Court
This book provides the first scholarly investigation of prosecutorial discretion in the International Criminal Court (ICC) from an interdisciplinary perspective. This work analyses the discretionary power of the ICC prosecutor and its scope. It explains that there is a tendency to overlook the necessity of distinguishing between the various usages of discretion when exercised as a power authorised by the law and effect when applying indeterminate legal thresholds. The author argues that the latter indeterminacy may give decision makers an unwarranted opportunity to exercise a wide range of discretion, where extra-legal factors may be considered. In comparison, prosecutorial discretion allows decision makers to consider extra-legal considerations. This book also discusses the relevance of political considerations within the decision-making process in the context of the exercise of prosecutorial discretion. It suggests that there need not be a conflict between the broad sense of justice as outlined in the Statute and political factors in giving effect to decisions. This book will be of interest to students of international law, global governance and international relations.

This book studies the first 50 years of Bangladesh politics since independence. It looks at Bangladesh politics as a unique case for study to analyze and understand the role of institutions, political parties, the election commission, election-time government, judiciary, the media, etc. The volume cross-examines the 1971 War of Liberation and the brutal killing of the republic’s founding father in 1975 as the two great divides that crystallized in the political arena between the Awami League on the one side and the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami on the other. Through deep dives on major historical events and key political developments that have since shaped Bangladesh’s entire society and politics, it then delves into topics including the parliament, electoral integrity, civil society, and politics as they take on a confrontational course. An incisive study on major struggles, achievements, and challenges faced by Bangladesh in the 20th century, this volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers in political science, democracy, modern history, and South Asia studies.

Poverty, Gender and Health in the Slums of Bangladesh provides comprehensive ethnographic accounts that depict the daily life experiences and health hardships encountered by young women and their families living in the slums of Dhaka city and the injustices they face. The analysis focuses on two specific historical eras: 2002-2003 and 2020-2022 and shows that despite recent improvements in employment opportunities and greater mobility for young women, their lives reflect ongoing challenges reminiscent of those faced two decades earlier. While national and global organizations acknowledge the nation's economic and social progress, those on the outskirts of society continue to grapple with enduring poverty. They are excluded from the advantages of economic growth, oppressed by unjust local, national, and global systems, discriminatory laws, and policies. Their struggles go unnoticed as they confront a slew of challenges, including slum evictions, enforced lockdowns, income losses, food insecurity, and ongoing crises related to health, injuries, fatalities, and exploitation and harassment by law enforcement and influential individuals within the slum and the city. After two decades, these obstacles persist, and life remains tenuous, with health severely compromised. This book will appeal to students, academics, and researchers in the fields of Public Health, Medical Anthropology, Gender Studies, Urban Studies, Development Studies, Social Sciences, as well as professionals engaged in urban health and poverty-related work.

Between Two Rivers: Ancient Mesopotamia and the Birth of History
Mesopotamia saw the first cities, devised the original writing system, sowed the early seeds of agriculture, and developed myths, medicine, and astronomy that all went on to influence societies around the world. However, the significance of this ancient civilization goes far beyond its technological inventions: These were the people who began the human tradition of recording their own histories. With each chapter focusing on a new artifact, historian Moudhy Al-Rashid takes us on a personal tour of ancient life: the brick that was the basis of Mesopotamian architecture; the classroom tablets that shed light on the timeless anxieties of student life; the stone obelisk that spoke to the vast socioeconomic gulfs. Ancient Mesopotamians wanted a witness to their lives, and thousands of years later, Al-Rashid shares their stories.
