Rose Wylie: painting a noun…

Rose Wylie: painting a noun…

Rose Wylie; Michael Glover

Celebrated British painter Rose Wylie—whose works are at once tactile, cerebral, and humorous—often draws her influence from a wide range of popular culture. Here her newest body of work references memories from her own life and mimics the way memories evolve and change over time. Wylie’s source material is culled from the vast visual world around her, ranging from sixteenth-century British estates to Serena Williams and the French Open. While initially these may seem random or aesthetically simplistic, through the nuanced use of humor, language, and compositional structure, Wylie creates wittily observed and subtly sophisticated meditations on the nature of memory, and visual representation itself, in line with the paintings she has become known for over the course of her career. A new essay by art critic Michael Glover explores the remarkable painter whose work has “spark, assurance, brash humor, an extraordinary, freewheeling eclecticism that seems to be just as ready to suck in references to the art of Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman portraiture as to pay homage to the films of Quentin Tarantino and the late paintings of Philip Guston.” Part of David Zwirner Books’s Spotlight Series, this book features Wylie’s newest paintings and drawings and is published on the occasion of the artist’s 2020 solo exhibition of these works at David Zwirner Hong Kong.

“Wylie fearlessly tackles the thorniest topics head-on, committing her thoughts and questions about politics, religion, fame, love, history, money and nature to canvas.” — Charlotte Brook, Harper’s Bazaar Inspired by film, pop culture, and the history of fashion as she experienced personally, Wylie harnesses a union of high and low culture with a bold technique of mark making. Her unique practice of material overlay and erasure creates fantastic compositions. Creating conceptual tensions between formal and informal aesthetics, Wylie employs the visual elements of text as formal details in her paintings. With a beautiful swiss binding, this monograph compiles the work of four exhibitions at David Zwirner offering a full breadth of Wylie’s most recent work to date. Giving insight and compassion to Wylie’s feminist and rebellious impulses, Judith Bernstein writes an accompanying text on how she relates to Wylie’s ambitious and playful energy. With a foreword by Nicholas Serota, this publication also features new essays by Barry Schwabsky and David Salle and an enlightening interview between the artist and Hans Ulrich Obrist.

Frankie Pauling Hutton

Frankie Pauling Hutton's insight comes from cosmology, esoteric Christianity, Theosophy, Gurdjieff's teachings, the Mahatmas and other superior beings. In this book, she weaves an extraordinary synthesis of essays which ponder the complicated, suffering prone life of earthlings as tied ultimately to the symbolism of the red rose, a unique rendering on earth which seems appreciated by every culture, globally for hundreds and hundreds of years. But why? There's obviously more to the rose than meets the eye. It is a lovely, fragrant and high frequency flower and perhaps that's why it has been so revered by diverse cultures and from pagans to patricians, commoners to royalty. But few among us know the metaphysics of the rose. We might deduce from these essays that humans are ever watched over and even unknowingly tweaked by beings from afar until such time the will and pure quest for eternal life begins to take place which ushers in graceful, committed work capable of transcending polarization, politics, race, and soci-economic matters. To know the rose aright, is to trump all that divides earthlings and Hutton's essays show us why secret societies have ever revered the rose for that reason.Following over a decade of research, in this little book, Dr. Hutton becomes our guide through a reacquaintance with ancient literature and poetry, biblical passages and much more to help us know the secret life of the rose. She fathom's the gist of the rose and explains in detail why this precious flower is in the league of God's profound renderings to mankind. The great teachers, including Dante, the Mahatmas, Andreev, Newbough, Gurdjieff, Rumi and Attar all point to the same message: to know the rose and know it well is to understand man's never ending quest to know the Source of all and everything, what many civilizations call God or the Force.

Rose City Redneck is my Poetic Journey through life so far. I start the book with my Grandparents and go on through Love, Kids, Faith, as well as darker subjects like Addiction and Suicide. I have witnessed all of these in my short lifetime and hopefully I can help others know they are not alone as they walk through them as well. Come and walk with me and who knows, maybe we can laugh, love or commiserate together. I am a man in my sixties who was raised in the rural areas of Arkansas. I am the the father of four wonderful daughters and eight grandchildren and one brand new Great-grandson. My wife Susie and I are nearing our fortieth anniversary. I have for many years written poetry to be able to deal with life. It's very therapeutic to allow these thoughts to drift from my head to the tip of a pencil. It turns out these poems had quite a chronological order to them when i gathered them all up. The poems are just insights into my life from the very highest of highs to the very lowest of lows. I hope you can relate to many of these poems as you go through your life as well.

From the moment Emerald boarded the ship to India, she knew she was in for an exciting journey. Having never journeyed abroad before, she simply could not wait to see what these mystical lands had in store for her. She felt as though this would be the greatest adventure of her life. And it was. Little did she know, the true adventure had nothing to do with magic, snakes or elephants as her mother believed it would. No; the greatest, most wonderful adventure in Miss Emerald Dawson's life was waiting for her in the seemingly inconsequential town of Shimla, in the form of a mysterious royal who liked to frequent the local library. What started as brief eye contact in a crowd soon grew into a connection that would forever change both of their lives. However, Miss Dawson could not help but ask herself: is it proper? Can a love between a sheltered young woman from London and a Maharaja truly survive? Emerald had no way to find out except experience it for herself. What had she gotten herself into? She didn't know. All she knew was that she certainly never wanted to get out of it.
