This book had its origin in a daily journal I kept when accompanying my late husband, Professor Stuart Simmonds, at that time a Lecturer in Tai Languages, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, on a field trip in Continental South-East Asia in the middle 1950s. The part of the world we visited then has changed enormously during the past half century and has been riven by wars, upheavals and political chicanery.

This collection of poems spans the course of the last eight years of my life. In that time I've been married, had a daughter, worked the blue collar life in a white collar world. Now, I'm going through a divorce, trying to do my best as a single dad, walking into a path I never anticipated I would be on. These poems are my song in that darkness.

WELCOME TO ANOTHER ACTION-PACKED SEASON OF SOMNIUM SEASON 2: OPERATION KATABASIS THIS SEASON, OUR PROTAGONIST DRIVES THROUGH THE OPEN WASTELAND OF THE MUNDANE, CONFRONTS NUMEROUS THREATS AND CONFRONTS THE CONDITIONS THAT MAKE THE AFFLICTION HE SUFFERS FROM POSSIBLE, THAT BEING THE TRUMAN SHOW SYNDROME Not necessarily based on but coordinating with the book Somnium, seu opus posthumum De astronomia lunari by Johannes Kepler. Written in Latin in 1608, it purports to present a detailed imaginative description of how the Earth might look when viewed from the Moon. That's where any resemblance ends. This Somnium presents a detailed description of how the earth might look from sleep. How life might look from other perspectives. A cosmogony of dreamed proofs through which the author gets to occupy events of different perspectives from Borges, John Cale and Kepler to film noir, science fiction, prosperity gospel and other hidden appropriations. Somnium is composed of 137 episodes of 137 words (think physics not psychics....) the significance being that in physics 137 was once believed to be the exact value of the fine-structure constant, a number which, according to Leon Lederman, "shows up naked all over the place."

The dragons rumbled low in their throats, they didn't like the void. "Listen!" Lady Thunderstroke said at last, standing near to her dragon some distance away, "There's a voice coming out of that thing!" The men concentrated on the strange opening and at last agreed, "You're right, but what a terrible voice!" "And they're speaking threats too!" "Someone is in harm's way inside that thing!" "I wonder where it goes, and how we can help them?" Lady Thunderstroke looked quietly up at her amethyst dragon and the dragon chirped. The Lady pulled her sword out and strode forward between the men and into the void saying "Only one way to find out - wait here!" and she was gone.

Every spring, billions of birds sweep north, driven by ancient instincts to return to their breeding grounds. This vast parade often goes unnoticed, except in a few places where these small travellers concentrate in large numbers. One such place is along Lake Erie in northwestern Ohio. There, the peak of spring migration is so spectacular that it attracts bird watchers from around the globe, culminating in one of the world’s biggest birding festivals. Millions of winged migrants pass through the region, some traveling thousands of miles, performing epic feats of endurance and navigating with stunning accuracy. Now climate change threatens to disrupt patterns of migration and the delicate balance between birds, seasons, and habitats. But wind farms - popular as green energy sources - can be disastrous for birds if built in the wrong places. This is a fascinating and urgent study of the complex issues that affect bird migration.
