Petty Officer Edgar Evans was Captain’s Scott’s ‘giant worker’ and his ‘invaluable assistant’. He went with Scott on both the British Antarctic Expeditions of the early 1900s – the ‘Discovery’ expedition of 1901 and the ‘Terra Nova’ expedition in 1910 – distinguishing himself on both. In 1903, with Scott, Edgar made the first long and arduous sortie onto the Plateau of Victoria Land. The journey highlighted Edgar’s common sense, strength, courage, wit and unflappability. Thus it came as no surprise when, in 1911, Edgar was chosen by Scott to be one of the five men to go on the final attempt at the South Pole. Tragically the ‘Welsh Giant’ was the first to die on the ill-fated return, and posthumously Edgar was blamed in some quarters for causing the deaths of the whole party. It was suggested that his failure was due to his relative lack of education, which made him less able to endure the conditions than his well-educated companions. Isobel Williams repudiates this shameful suggestion and redresses the balance of attention paid to the upper and lower-deck members of Scott's famous expeditions.

More Scott Operas examines some thirty operas based on the novels and poems of Sir Walter Scott that have come to light since publication of the author's widely reviewed earlier book, The Walter Scott Operas (1977), which discussed fifty Scott operas. There are chapters on an operatic setting of a Scott poem by a little known English composer who knew Wagner; on three operatic renditions of another poem, The Lord of the Isles; on Carl Loewe's opera Emmy, based on Kenilworth, and on an opera by a twentieth century Argentine composer based on the same novel; on a forgotten Italian Fair Maid of Perth opera that would rival Bizet's; and on two chamber operas by a composer-librettist who is alive and well and at home in Charleston, South Carolina. The book concludes with an intriguing account of Scott's night at the San Carlo Opera. Mitchell's approach is again that of a literary-historian than of a music critic or musicologist. He shows what happened to Scott's original poem or novel when it is changed into an opera and how that opera compares with others based on the same poem or novel. This approach leads to a fresh slant on Scott's characters and on the structure of his works, and it leads ultimately to our greater awareness and appreciation of Scott's art and of his impact on European culture.

"Nathan Scott's Literary Criticism and Fundamental Theology" reexamines the pioneering contribution of Nathan A. Scott, Jr. to the field of theology and literature. It both recalls Scott's achievement and suggests its continuing value by focusing on the question of Scott's method. Rather than following the traditional interpretation of Scott as a literary critic employing Paul Tillich's theology of culture, this book proposes that Scott's work is best understood as a form of fundamental theology.
