Experiments that really work. This book is a set of four educational and fun projects for kids age 10+ requiring materials you probably have on hand. This series is designed for teachers, parents, homeschool families, grandparents, tutors, and babysitters. Adult supervision is suggested for all projects. You will find reproducible worksheets (templates) with each project. Thanks for playing Project 1: Letting Goop Spark Creative Writing There is nothing like a messy science experiment to inspire the reluctant writer. Have fun as you make a mess and inspire imaginations with this project. Project 2: Make a Rainbow in a Jar The difference between a pound of cotton balls and a pound of rocks is density. This project is a colorful way to demonstrate density with water and a few secret ingredients that can be found in almost every kitchen. Project 3: How to Make a Lava Lamp This project addresses the mad scientist, artist, and writer in us all. The home-made lava lamp is a great pick-me-up project for any time of day. Students love it. Project 4: How to use Galileo and Skateboard in the same sentence If Earth is rotating on its axis and orbiting the sun, why can't we feel the movement? This physics activity explores that very question using little more than a skateboard and a ball.
Early 1972, the Roe v. Wade decision is seven months away and an upper middle-class family is about to be slammed into varying degrees of lunacy. Mabel Jamieson, the youngest of four siblings, has an illegal abortion leaving her maimed and unconscious. Though unknown to her at the time, Mabel's older brother, Jasper, followed her the night she went to see a man masquerading as a doctor, and was able to deliver her cataleptic body safely home-only after witnessing the ordeal through a hidden window. Filled with rage and misinterpreted information, Jasper swears to avenge his sister's wrongdoing and spends years sifting his way through seemingly impossible implications until he finds the man responsible.Flash forward to summer 1989, Jasper's eleven-year-old daughter Caroline and her cousin Mitch find a small cross near the home where their fathers, and their Aunt Mabel, grew up; a cross bearing the date March 24, 1972. The children trade theories about its origin and let their discovery saturate their imaginations until a tragic accident devastates Caroline and rips all the joy from her heart. One year later, still devastated and seemingly inconsolable, Caroline begins to come to terms with the loss she endured while her father tries to make peace with the horrors that still haunt his mind, even after all this time. So one evening, while celebrating the Fourth of July holiday, Jasper consumed with his own agenda and little regard for his sister's, is determined to confront her and tell her he knows about the abortion, tell her he knows who the father is, tell her he knows the man who maimed her.The Caretakers is not another story of good vs. evil, but one of devotions vs. obligation and protection vs. abandonment. Crafted from years of collecting real life accounts as well as cherished childhood memories, the author depicts a heartwarming storyline that will tug at your very soul and petition your own beliefs. The narration takes the reader down a nonlinear path with character revelations at every turn. When we first meet Mabel she's a confused and doubtful teenage girl, but before long becomes a young woman who learns to cherish her own worth. Throughout the story, Caroline is a young teen herself, but like Mabel, is forced to face tragedy square in the face at far too young of an age all while her father comes face-to-face with a truth that has haunted him for nearly fifteen years.AUTHOR'S NOTE I first published The Caretakers in May, 2011. And though I was pleased with the overall theme and content, I realized (albeit years later) that the manuscript needed polishing. Admittedly, I rushed to publish-like many first-time authors do-but now, I've gone back, had it edited and hopefully it is free from errors. As for the storyline itself ... it's difficult, I think, for a writer to go back and reexamine their work. It can be a daunting task. Because we all evolve. We change from experiences here and there, and when we look at back at older writing, sometimes we wonder why we didn't say something differently ... end a scene, begin a scene differently. But that doesn't mean we should discard what we created in the past. And so, for the most part, The Caretakers remains as it always has been ... a first novel, with a few revisions for both clarity and flow.I cannot promise that it is a perfect work. Nonetheless, it was imperative to have a clean copy available to readers so I hope you'll consider reading the fourth, revised edition. Thank you.

The next feel-good read from acclaimed author Shauna Robinson, following a small-town fall festival struggling to get off the ground, but that might just offer the second chance we all need.Lauryn Harper had a plan. A high achieving, perfectly constructed, five-year plan. But after a (totally blown out of proportion) mishap at work that plan is put to the test.As punishment for her mistake she is transferred to the Ryser Charity Department, a branch of her corporation that just so happens to be located in the hometown she abandoned long ago - the same hometown that her powerful corporation is responsible for running into the ground. Horrified at the thought of returning and facing those she left behind (one in particular keeps coming to mind), Lauryn quickly comes up with a new plan: impress her boss enough that she's briskly whisked back to her big city life. However, it soon becomes clear that sticking to plans isn't that simple, especially when her ex-best friend enters the charity department demanding they help revitalize the town by throwing the famous Greenstead Fall Festival. Confronted by her past wrongs, Lauryn immediately agrees to host the festival on Ryser's dime, but soon enough Lauryn is swept away in town hijinks, chaotic planning committees, and a second chance at a childhood friend that shows her why home isn't necessarily a place she has to run from.
