Still Soldiers and Scholars?

Still Soldiers and Scholars?

Coumbe; Steven J Condly; Lieutenant Colonel W L Skimmyhorn

Alpha Edition
2018
pokkari
Still Soldiers and Scholars? sheds light on a neglected aspect of talent management, namely, officer accessions testing and evaluation. It does so by tracing the history of officer testing since 1900, identifying and analyzing key developments in the assessment process, and then offering recommendations about how the Army should revise its approach to officer testing. This book supplements a series of monographs written by the Army's Office of Economic and Manpower Analysis (OEMA) and published by the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) in 2009 and 2010. In those monographs, the authors proposed an officer corps strategy based on the theory of talent management. This book is a necessary first step in reforming the Army's officer accessions effort in order to better align it with the Army's talent-based approach to officer management.
Who Votes?

Who Votes?

Raymond E. Wolfinger; Steven J. Rosenstone

Yale University Press
1980
pokkari
Elections are at the heart of the American political system, but in 1976 only 54 percent of the voting age population went to the polls. The question of who votes matters greatly to everyone involved in politics and to all those concerned about the current and future state of American democracy. Based on data from the 1972 and 1974 Census Bureau surveys, Wolfinger and Rosenstone are able to identify for the first time those social and economic groups that are most likely to vote and to explain sensibly and convincingly those factors that influence voter turnout.

Quantitative Feedback Theory

Quantitative Feedback Theory

The first edition of Quantitative Feedback Theory gained enormous popularity by successfully bridging the gap between theory and real-world engineering practice. Avoiding mathematical theorems, lemmas, proofs, and correlaries, it boiled down to the essential elements of quantitative feedback theory (QFT) necessary to readily analyze, develop, and implement robust control systems. Thoroughly updated and expanded, Quantitative Feedback Theory: Fundamentals and Applications, Second Edition continues to provide a platform for intelligent decision making and design based on knowledge of the characteristics and operating scenario of the plant. Beginning with the fundamentals, the authors build a background in analog and discrete-time multiple-input-single-output (MISO) and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) feedback control systems along with the fundamentals of the QFT technique. The remainder of the book links these concepts to practical applications. Among the many enhancements to this edition are a new section on large wind turbine control system, four new chapters, and five new appendices. The new chapters cover non-diagonal compensator design for MIMO systems, QFT design involving Smith predictors for time delay systems with uncertainty, weighting matrices and control authority, and QFT design techniques applied to real-world industrial systems. Quantitative Feedback Theory: Fundamentals and Applications, Second Edition includes new and revised examples and end-of-chapter problems and offers a companion CD that supplies MIMO QFT computer-aided design (CAD) software. It is the perfect guide to effectively and intuitively implementing QFT control.

This pathbreaking book paints a radical new picture of alcoholism, offering powerful evidence that most chronic alcoholics live out their lives in intact, relatively quiet family environments. The authors show, however, that living in an alcoholic family,in which alcoholism is the central theme around which family life is organized, has profound effects on family members both drinkers and nondrinkers.

An authoritative guide to strategic planning and implementation of GIS The Design and Implementation of Geographic Information Systems provides a unique nuts-and-bolts perspective of enterprise GIS design, a geographic information system that meets the needs of numerous users across multiple units in an organization. This hands-on guide offers in-depth, up-to-date material on issues of spatial data when designing and implementing enterprise GIS, along with insightful, illustrative examples. From the predesign planning stages dealing with assessment, requirement analysis, organizational issues, and cost analysis, to integrating legacy MIS systems and preparing for future developments in database design, this user-friendly book addresses all the fundamental aspects of the design and implementation of GIS, regardless of software or hardware. It offers helpful "decision trees" to assist in strategic planning, as well as proven strategies for application development, interface design, and enabling Web-based access. Numerous case studies and examples from the private and public sectors demonstrate how these strategies and approaches play out in the real world. As GIS becomes increasingly integrated with traditional MIS/IT database systems, GIS practitioners and MIS/IT managers will find The Design and Implementation of Geographic Information Systems a reliable, go-to resource.

The Faces of Forgiveness – Searching for Wholeness and Salvation

The Faces of Forgiveness – Searching for Wholeness and Salvation

While forgiveness has historically been regarded as a religious concern, it has also become a popular topic in contemporary psychology. Unfortunately, there has been little effort to combine a Christian understanding of forgiveness with psychology. The Faces of Forgiveness, winner of the Narramore Award from the Christian Association for Psychological Studies, steps in to fill this void. The authors fuse Christian forgiveness and psychology with the unifying motif of the face; thereby building on the considerable psychological research linking emotions related to forgiveness with the human face. At a deeper level, the face can serve as a metaphor for integrating forgiveness, wholeness, and salvation. The authors argue that forgiveness should take a central role in our understanding of salvation because it is warranted by the Bible and engages our postmodern context. Pastors, psychologists, family counselors, and students of psychology and theology will find The Faces of Forgiveness a helpful resource.

To fill this void, F. LeRon Shults and Steven Sandage, coauthors of The Faces of Forgiveness (winner of the Narramore Award from the Christian Association for Psychological Studies) continue their interdisciplinary dialogue in their latest work, Transforming Spirituality. In this book Shults and Sandage address the subject of spiritual transformation through the lenses of psychology and theology. In addition to college and seminary students, Transforming Spirituality will appeal to readers interested in Christian spirituality. What is more, it provides helpful insights for counselors, psychologists, and others who work in the mental health field.
