A Son for Glory

A Son for Glory

Bible-reading is more of an art than a science. The Bible is a story, not a lexicon of systematic theological definitions. With this in mind, the Through New Eyes Bible Commentary Series builds on the foundational Biblical-theology work of James B. Jordan and other like-minded scholars in bringing you a set of commentaries that will help you read, teach and preach through the Bible while picking up on the rich symphonic themes and the literary symbolism of the Scriptures. Because they are written for thoughtful Christians without being overly academic, these commentaries will serve as valuable resources for family worship, Sunday school or Bible studies. From Inside the Book: "God says, 'This is my son, Job, have you considered him' God's love for Job draws Job into his presence, He wants Job to pass back through the cherubim into his presence. When God loves his people, he wants them with him. Notice the parallel here with Jesus. As soon as God says, 'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased' at Jesus' baptism, what happens? The Spirit drives him into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil....When God gets excited about his sons, he wants to send them into battle. He sends his sons into the fray. 'This is my son ' he announces proudly, and then he sends him to face Satan. 'This is my son ' and he sends him to battle demons....He takes his sons, pours his Spirit upon them, and draws them to himself through the sword and fire. That is what Job is doing with his sons, and that is what God is doing with his servant, his beloved son, Job."

"It's got to be hard to keep amazing coming and coming in each chapter, but Toby set the standard with his first novel and this one stays true to form." With her world turned inside out, Nikki is struggling to feel anything besides useless and alone, even though she and Michael are closer than ever. Her first instinct was to curl up and hide, but four months of feeling sorry for herself was three and a half months too many. Her world clearly isn't going to fix itself, so she's taking over. Now she's hitting the streets every night, searching for something-anything-to make her feel like her old self again. But what she finds is a nightmare. A vicious new threat is prowling the shadows, a herald of the coming apocalypse-a threat that might be closer to home than anyone realizes.
Arcadia, Indiana

Arcadia, Indiana

pokkari
Arcadia, Indiana is a mutant tragedy, a five act-sonnet sequence, staged in the trash-choked landscape of pastoral fantasy. It plays with narrative, labor, sexuality, and form, starting with a murder in an Indiana steel factory and ending with the Sphinx refusing all of Oedipus' solutions to her riddles. This play is a Renaissance tragedy in contemporary drag, destabilizing literary boundaries to develop a poetics of trash, in which the repressed and discarded parts of (literary) history return to strangle their point of origin.

Across Eurasia is a journey of discovery, which unfolds during a yearlong adventure that encircles the globe.Sensing that his life has edged towards meaninglessness, and finding little refuge in society's trappings, author Toby Smith returns to a mostly abandoned village high in the Mexican desert. His experience there reinvigorates his curiosity about one of life's most fundamental questions. In 1998, at age twenty-eight, he sets out to examine his beliefs firsthand by immersing himself in a hands-on exploration of the human condition. He treks through the Himalaya, barely survives a pilgrimage to Tibet, encircles the Indian subcontinent, and traverses Eastern Europe as the region emerges from the grip of the Cold War.As he comes full circle, Smith emerges a changed individual with newfound awareness about what makes us human. Eloquent, engaging, and enduring, Across Eurasia is a classic of transformative travel writing.

In this follow-up to the author's first book, Across Eurasia, Toby Smith sets out on an adventure that takes him overland, from the wilds of Alaska to the barren tip of Argentina, and back again. Smith and his partner Tamara leave Alaska in a battered 1973 Datsun 510, which they reluctantly abandon in the American Midwest, and continue on into Mexico and across Central and South America via bus, boat, train, and whatever transportation the locals rely upon. A little luck and the kindness of strangers help them survive political unrest, spiraling crime, despotic regimes, guerrillas, armed police, bandits, strikes, and protests - all functions of what Smith calls the American Dichotomy - in addition to Arctic blizzards, unreliable vehicles, shady used car salesmen, roach-infested hotels, erupting volcanoes, reckless bus drivers, tropical diseases, torrential rains, mudslides, altitude sickness, and dicey border crossings. Along the way, Smith explores the realities behind, and reasons for, Latin America's tumultuous and often violent past. The stories of those he meets along the way serve as poignant reminders of what can happen anywhere, in any era, when power is left unchecked.

Dispositions and Powers

Dispositions and Powers

As we understand them, dispositions are relatively uncontroversial 'predicatory' properties had by objects disposed in certain ways. By contrast, powers are hypothetical 'ontic' properties posited in order to explain dispositional behaviour. Chapter 1 outlines this distinction in more detail. Chapter 2 offers a summary of the issues surrounding analysis of dispositions and various strategies in contemporary literature to address them, including one of our own. Chapter 3 describes some of the important questions facing the metaphysics of powers including why they're worth positing, and how they might metaphysically explain laws of nature and modality. Cross-Cultural Collaboration in Popular Music

Cross-Cultural Collaboration in Popular Music

Toby Martin; Seyed Mohammadreza Beladi; Ðang Lan

Cambridge University Press
2025
pokkari
Cross-cultural collaboration in popular music represents opportunities for the audibility of multiple voices and the creation of new sounds, but it also presents many challenges. These challenges are both musical – that is, how to technically match voices – and ethical – that is, how to negotiate historically entrenched power discrepancies. Practice-based research has recently developed as a field in popular music studies. This burgeoning area has much to offer in terms of new knowledge, based on embodied insights, lived experience, and an arts practice. Through a practitioner-centred account of three projects involving traditional Persian and Vietnamese musicians, and western folk/rock musicians, this Element suggests pragmatic strategies and conceptual frameworks for making pop music with people of different cultural backgrounds.
