This book tries to show how Wilhelm Dilthey can see in "historical consciousness" a potential to overcome its own sceptical, nihilistic and paralysing consequences. To this end it develops the methodological, systematic and metaphilosophical aspects of Dilthey's "philosophy of life" and gives an account of his scathing critique of metaphysical thought. Embedded in this wider theoretical framework "historical consciousness" can be described as a further step in the pursuit of enlightenment in a self-reflective manner and as a key to more seminal philosophical work.
