The socio-economic transformation of South Africa, is necessary for the consolidation of its democracy. This can only be fully realised when poor people's voices are heard in the corridors of power. Voices of protest documents the first post-apartheid initiatives of poor people to mobilise and organise themselves. It analyses social struggles and movements in a variety of arenas. The title illuminates their demands, leadership and membership, organisational structure, and most importantly, their politics. It also assesses the collective effect of South Africa's social movements on the country's democracy and its socio-economic system. This is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding contemporary South Africa and its future.

Bolivia leapt onto the front pages of the news in October 2003, when the 'Gas Wars' protests caused the ousting of Bolivia's President, Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada. In the Gas Wars the indigenous inhabitants, trade unions, and other civil society groups came together to protest the sale of Bolivian natural gas to the United States through a pipeline leading to Chile. In the unrest protestors were killed, and calls for the President to resign grew ever louder. Bolivia has a long history of social protest. In Cochabamba in 2000, the Water Wars saw nearly 10,000 people take to the streets against the privatisation of water. The Bolivian peoples' strong stance against foreign interests and the sale of their natural resources has been triggered by US pressure; first in the 'war on drugs' - the fumigation of 'illegal' coca crops - and pressure waged on a wider front of IMF structural adjustments, and the neo-liberal regime. In Patterns of Protest, UK-based Andean expert John Crabtree explains the antecedents of a poor country's struggle against its most powerful neighbours, and the predatory interests of global capitalism. In a strongly indigenous nation, explains the influence of Quechua and Aymara identity and organising in Bolivian politics, and analyses the unique way that Boliva has united disparate populations - the urban working class and the rural indigenous people - to demand that Bolivian natural resources benefit Bolivians first.

Trump: Signs of Protest

A hilarious photographic record of an anti-Trump march and the wonderfully creative banners that appeared in it. On July 13, 2018, Londoners turned out en masse to protest against Donald Trump during his visit to the United Kingdom. The author of this book arrived to participate in the march and took his camera along, just in case there might be something 'interesting' to capture. What he found was nothing short of a Vesuvian eruption of resistance to Trump and his policies. The outrage, disgust and vitriol directed against Trump was pandemic – but so was the creativity and humour. This hilarious but powerful book is a photographic record of that momentous march, and the time, effort and in many cases money that protestors put in to creating their banners. Hundreds of thousands of people turned out – endless seas of all ages, races, genders and nationalities, and the ingenuity on display is limitless, from simple text banners ('Super Callous Fascist Racist Sexist Loser POTUS'; 'Pore me a Covfefe'), to gloriously rendered illustrations (not all of them safe for work), ingenious papier-mâché sculptures, and a LOT of swearing.

Back then, it wasn't over a health pandemic, but because county leaders refused to desegregate white and Black schools. So when long-hidden photographs surface from the student protests along Main Street in Farmville, Sam, Derek, and Caitlin are on the case to help identify the brave teenagers who stood for justice nearly sixty years ago.Their search winds through Virginia's checkered racial past of Jim Crow and Massive Resistance, sending them to key sites like the Moton Museum, Evergreen Cemetery, Jackson Ward, and the Virginia State Capitol, and courageous voices like Barbara Johns, Oliver Hill, and Maggie Walker. But when protests over Confederate monuments and cries for social justice ignite their city, will the kids use their lessons from history to take a stand in the present? How far they will go to support new friends while confronting faces from the past? Pictures at the Protest is the ninth book in The Virginia Mysteries series. Resistencia: Poems of Protest and Revolution
With a powerful and poignant introduction from Julia Alvarez, Resistencia: Poems of Protest and Revolution is an extraordinary collection, rooted in a strong tradition of protest poetry and voiced by icons of the movement and some of the most exciting writers today. The poets of Resistencia explore feminist, queer, Indigenous, and ecological themes alongside historically prominent protests against imperialism, dictatorships, and economic inequality. Within this momentous collection, poets representing every Latin American country grapple with identity, place, and belonging, resisting easy definitions to render a nuanced and complex portrait of language in rebellion.Included in English translation alongside their original language, the fifty-four poems in Resistencia are a testament to the art of translation as much as the act of resistance. An all-star team of translators, including former US Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Herrera along with young, emerging talent, have made many of the poems available for the first time to an English-speaking audience. Urgent, timely, and absolutely essential, these poems inspire us all to embrace our most fearless selves and unite against all forms of tyranny and oppression.

Rooted in the performative of Speech Act Theory, this interdisciplinary study crafts a new model to compare the work we do with words when we protest: across genres, from different geographies and languages. Rich with illustrative examples from Turkey, U.S., West Germany, Romania, Guatemala, Great Britain, and Northern Ireland, it examines the language of protest (chants, songs, poetry and prose) with an innovative use of analytical tools that will advance current theory. Operating at the intersection of linguistic pragmatics and critical discourse analysis this book provides fresh insights on interdisciplinary topics including power, identity, legitimacy and the Social Contract. In doing so it will appeal to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, pragmatics and critical discourse analysis, in addition to researchers working in sociology, political science, discourse, cultural and communication studies.
Internet Use and Protest in Malaysia and other Authoritarian Regimes
This book investigates the impact of internet use on anti-government protesting under authoritarian rule. By breaking up the causal chain into various steps, it provides a thorough and nuanced understanding of internet’s role in different stages of the mobilization process. It argues that the impact of internet use on anti-governmental protesting differs per step in the ‘mobilization chain’, and also that the effect depends on both the on- and offline repression of the regime, as well as on the type of internet that is available. While staying far away from any technologically deterministic claims about the internet, the book demonstrates that the internet especially plays an important role in the early stages of the mobilization process: By exposing citizens to alternative political information online, internet users are more likely to become sympathetic towards anti-governmental protest movements.
