Experiential Realism

Experiential Realism (1973) is the outline of a new philosophical system. It is an attempt to discuss the major ingredients found in the context of comprehensive human experience. This approach to mankind and its environment is descriptive rather than speculative. Since it is based on all the major aspects of human experience, it avoids the restrictive (and sometimes doctrinaire) approach to a few specific problems – a fault which mars much contemporary philosophy. This book considers in detail words, meaning, mind, physical objects, concepts, knowledge and values. It makes use of the many sound insights reported by philosophers, ancient, modern and contemporary, and indeed there is considerable kinship with A.N. Whitehead’s insights. It also offers an evaluation of representative philosophers in the context of comprehensive experience – thus placing Experiential Realism in perspective.

She's been nothing but rumor over the ages. But now the gods are listening. Ophira Naga thought she understood the game. Ancient relics, divine conspiracies, enemies hiding behind human faces. But the hunt for the relics is shifting, and the legends are changing. The gods aren't just watching; they're steering. And someone close is holding the reins. The sword is more than a blade. It's a promise of blood, a key to a fate she cannot escape. Each step pulls her deeper into a web of betrayal, and each touch threatens to break her. Visions of a twisted future claw at her mind: a world ruled by Athena and Perseus, where mortals are slaves, and Zeus has fallen. Marcus's charm wraps around her, a velvet leash tightening with each caress, until a secret breaks through the silence and changes everything. If she cannot untangle the truth from the lies, she won't just lose the relics: She'll lose herself. Because some secrets were never meant to be revealed. And some voices were never meant to stay silent. For readers who crave urban fantasy where betrayal cuts deeper than steel, where ancient powers refuse to stay buried, and where every whispered secret could be your undoing.

This eminently readable book is the first extensive monograph dealing with the early history of the diplomatic relations between the Ottoman Empire and the Netherlands based on Western as well as Turkish sources and secondary literature. Its aim is to present a balanced bilateral account of both the Turkish and the Dutch viewpoint. The statesmanship of the Ottoman admiral and grand vizier Khalil Pasha, who took the diplomatic initiative in 1610 is studied in detail as is the diplomatic activity of Cornelis Haga, the first Dutch ambassador to the Porte. Their successful negotiations led to the grant of capitulations by the Sultan Ahmed I in 1612. This document formed the basis of 400 years of political and economic relations of the Netherlands with Turkey. An edition of the text and an integral translation are also given.

III osa A. H. Tammsaare roomanisarja "Tõde ja õigus" pehmeköitelises formaadis, mis ilmus esmaskordselt 1931. aastal.Romaan käsitleb 1905. aasta revolutsiooni, mil valitseb palju segadust: näib, et harjumuspärane elukorraldus on lakanud ja mõistusel on toimuvast raske aru saada. "Isegi loodus on nagu kaotanud tasakaalu" - maasikate õitsemine vaheldub lumesajuga.Tegevus toimub sügiseses Tallinna linnaruumis, mis on selgelt äratuntav. Õhustikule on olemuslik hääbumise ja lagunemisega seotud meeleolud. Üldine õhkkond on sünge, ilm udune ja rõske. Samas on tegelased eestlastele omaselt pidevas parema maailma ootamise seisundis. Kuna autor koges isiklikult revolutsioonisündmusi ja elas nende keskel, on tõenäoliselt selles "Tõe ja õiguse" osas esindatud tugevalt autobiograafilisi elemente.Tammsaare analüüsib, mis võtetega kasutavad revolutsioonitegijad massi mõjutamiseks ideedega manipuleerimist ehk missugused on revolutsiooni psühholoogilised protsessid. Autor väljendab selgelt arvamust, et igasugune vägivallast lähtuv (vabadus)liikumine annab tulemuseks vaid hävingu. Teos on justkui inimese võitlus ühiskonnaga. Peategelaseks on Indrek, kes kogeb revolutsiooni keskel olles küll vabadusliikumise ideede ilu, kuid näeb ka neis peituvat pettust - rahvale lubatud maapealset paradiisi. See on põhjus, miks ta sellest kõigest lõpuks eemale astub. Revolutsiooni eitavate vaatenurkade tõttu sai teos 30.-ndatel aastatel palju teravat kriitikat nii Eesti Vabariigis kui ka NSV Liidus, samuti Eesti NSV-s kuni 1960.-ndate lõpuni.

IV osa A. H. Tammsaare romaanisarjast "Tõde ja õigus" pehmeköitelises formaadis.

A. H. Tammsaare romaanisarja "Tõde ja õigus" viimane osa pehmeköitelises formaadis.
God and History in the Early Medieval West

God and History in the Early Medieval West

Robert A.H. Evans

While virtually all early medieval historians wrote about God, they did not do so in the same way. Rather than taking their comments about God at face value then, as has been the case in much work on medieval history-writing, they are deserving of closer scrutiny, with implications not simply for how we understand the key narrative sources for early medieval history, but also the cultures in which they originated. Seeking to fill this historiographical gap, this book explores, through the prolific writing of historians in the Carolingian Empire, how historians in early medieval societies thought about God and what this meant for themselves and their audiences. It argues that although Carolingian historians wrote about God's agency with tremendous literary subtlety, while reflecting complex theological ideas and attempting to intervene into challenging political realities, in many respects they also broke with the example of early Christian historians from Late Antiquity, which demonstrates that writing about God was neither a uniform nor inevitable part of early medieval history writing. As well as yielding new insights into the nature of these crucial primary sources, this analysis helps to provide an overdue examination of the complex relationship between religion and history writing in early medieval societies. The book demonstrates that comments about God cannot be reduced to mere political propaganda or even moralistic encouragements for early medieval Christians to lead better lives. Instead, it argues that these historians sought to communicate a robust theology of divine activity which was relevant and useful for those involved in the often-threatening world of Carolingian public life.

The Architecture of Medieval Churches investigates the impact of affective theology on architecture and artefacts, focusing on the Middle Ages as a period of high achievement of this synthesis. It explores aspects of medieval church and cathedral architecture in relation to the contemporary metaphysics and theology, which articulated an integrated theocentric culture, architecture, and art. Three modes of attention: comprehension, instruction, and contemplation, informed the builders’ intuition and intention. The book’s central premise reasons that love for God was the critical force in the creation of vernacular church architecture, using a selection of medieval writings to provide a unique critique of the genius of architecture and art during this period. An interdisciplinary study between architecture, theology, and philosophy, it will appeal to academics and researchers in these fields.

Early Dynastic Egypt spans the five centuries preceding the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza. This was the formative period of ancient Egyptian civilization, and it witnessed the creation of a distinctive culture that was to endure for 3,000 years. This book examines the background to that great achievement, the mechanisms by which it was accomplished, and the character of life in the Nile valley during the first 500 years of Pharaonic rule. The results of over thirty years of international scholarship and excavation are presented in a single highly illustrated volume. It traces the re-discovery of Early Dynastic Egypt, explains how the dynasties established themselves in government and concludes by examining the impact of the early state on individual communities and regions.
