Islamic religious teachers (asatizah) and scholars (ulama) play a significant role in providing spiritual leadership for the Singapore Malay/Muslim community. Lately, the group has been cast under the spotlight over a range of issues, from underperformance in the national examination, their ability to integrate into the broader society, exposure to radical and conservative ideas such as Salafism from the Middle East, and unemployment. Reaching for the Crescent examines a growing segment within the group, namely Islamic studies graduates, who obtained their degrees from universities in the Middle East and neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia. It identifies factors that condition the proliferation of Islamic studies graduates in Singapore, examine the dominant religious institutionsthey attend, the nature of Islamic education they received, and their challenges. It tackles the impact of their religious education on the spiritual life and well-being of the community. Based on qualitative and quantitative data collected, the book calls for a rethinking of a prevailing discourse of Arabization of Singapore Muslims and academic approaches that focus on madrasah education and Islam through the security lens.

Even while many universities maintain ambiguous or affirming orientations to religious institutions for reasons to do with history and ethos, much western scholarship has presumed higher education to be a strongly secularizing force. This framing has resulted in religion often being marginalized or ignored as a cultural irrelevance by the university sector. However, recent times have seen higher education increasingly drawn into political discourses that problematize religion in general, and Islam in particular, as an object of risk. Using the largest data set yet collected in the UK, this book explores university life and the ways in which ideas about Islam and Muslim identities are produced, experienced, perceived, appropriated, and objectified. It asks what role universities and Muslim higher education institutions play in the production, reinforcement, and contestation of emerging narratives about religious difference. This is a culturally nuanced treatment of universities as sites of knowledge production, and contexts for the negotiation of perspectives on culture and religion among an emerging generation. It demonstrates the urgent need to release Islam from its official role as the othered, the feared. When universities achieve this we will be able to help students of all affiliations and of none to be citizens of the campus in preparation for being citizens of the world.

Normkritisk pedagogik är ett begrepp som utvecklats i Sverige under 2000-talet. Begreppet har sina rötter i kritisk pedagogik, queerteori och intersektionella perspektiv och uppstod från början i en pedagogisk kontext som en reaktion mot det som beskrevs som en toleranspedagogisk inriktning på inkluderings- och värdegrundsarbetet i förskola och skola. Syftet är att utforska och ifrågasätta hur de normer och maktrelationer som skapar skillnad genom perspektiv och praktiker präglar lärandeinstitutioner och de som verkar inom dem.Begreppet har fått stor spridning och utvecklats på olika sätt vilket har både positiva och problematiska aspekter. Normkritikens utbredning har bidragit till ett uppmärksammande och utvecklande av arbetet med mänskliga rättigheter på många olika samhällsarenor. Samtidigt har inlemmandet i en offentlig diskussion bidragit till en mainstreaming av begreppet vilket tömt det på viktigt kritiskt innehåll. Normkritik har även ibland kommit att uppfattas som en ny norm, en uppmaning att ’tänka rätt’ men utan att i grunden förändra.I denna antologi diskuterar lärare, utbildare och forskare verksamma inom området hur begreppet har utvecklats teoretiskt och hur det används i pedagogisk praktik.
