The Scarlet Gang Of Asakusa

In the 1920s, Asakusa was to Tokyo what Montmartre had been to 1890s Paris and Times Square was to be to 1940s New York. Available in English for the first time, The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa, by Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata, captures the decadent allure of this entertainment district, where beggars and teenage prostitutes mixed with revue dancers and famous authors. Originally serialized in a Tokyo daily newspaper in 1929 and 1930, this vibrant novel uses unorthodox, kinetic literary techniques to reflect the raw energy of Asakusa, seen through the eyes of a wandering narrator and the cast of mostly female juvenile delinquents who show him their way of life. Markedly different from Kawabata's later work, The Scarlet Gang of Asakusa shows this important writer in a new light. The annotated edition of this little-known literary gem includes the original illustrations by Ota Saburo. The annotations illuminate Tokyo society and Japanese literature, bringing this fascinating piece of Japanese modernism at last to a wide audience.

NATIONAL BESTSELLER - Comedian Ian Karmel, with help from his sister, Dr. Alisa Karmel, opens up about the daily humiliations of being fat and why it's so hard to talk about something so visible. "As charming and funny as it is poignant and thoughtful."--Roxane Gay, author of Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body Ian Karmel has weighed eight pounds and he has weighed 420 pounds and right now he's almost exactly in between the two, but this book is not a weight-loss book. It's about being a fat person in a skinny world. It's about gym class and football practice, about chicken wings and juice cleanses, about airplane seats and roller coasters, about fat jokes and Jabba the Hutt, about crying in the Big and Tall section and the joys of being a sneakerhead, about prediabetes and gout, and about realizing that you actually don't want to eat yourself to death and hoping it's not too late. This book also includes a "What Now?" section from Ian's sister, Alisa, who herself cycled through so many fad diets that she eventually pursued a master's in nutrition and a doctorate in psychology with the goal of changing the contemporary narrative around fatness. Ian and Alisa Karmel grew up fat. As kids, they never talked about it. They were too busy fighting over the last SnackWell's Devil's Food cookie. Now, decades later, having both turned into fat adults who eventually figured out how to get their health under control, they are finally ready to unpack the impact that their weight has had on them. For them, the T-Shirt Swim Club is meant to be a place of support for anyone who struggles with weight issues. A place of care and candor, free of shame. A place to not deny or avoid the emotions you feel, the experiences you go through, the embarrassment, the anger, the resentment. T-Shirt Swim Club is about being a fat person and how the world treats fat people--but also an acknowledgment that maybe it doesn't always have to feel quite so lonely.
As the authors state, “Without rethinking how, what, when, where, and why we are teaching, technology will merely be an expensive way of making the existing system faster and flashier.” In How to Innovate, Mary Moss Brown and Alisa Berger - founding co-principals of the NYC iSchool - apply their extensive on-the-ground experience to demonstrate a radically different approach to school transformation. They introduce a scalable model of how schools can and should redefine themselves to better meet the needs of 21st century students. Using a framework built around four critical levers for school change - curriculum, culture, time, and human capital - the NYC iSchool model merges the teaching of big ideas and valuable skills with the realities of accountability, academic preparation, and adolescent development. The book includes more than 20 activities that will help educators begin the process of school transformation, whether they want to focus on a single programme, one area of change, or engage in a full-scale whole school improvement effort. This accessible, practical, and inspiring resource is designed to be used over and over again, in any context, despite the constantly changing climates in which schools operate.

In his first book, acclaimed interior designer Jay Jeffers displays the sophisticated yet playful spirit of his work. Jay Jeffers is known for his fearless and inventive use of colour and pattern, his brilliant mix of art and furnishings - including antique, vintage, modern - and the redefinition of traditional style from his modern point of view. Luxurious but livable, his designs always include a fresh and lively kick: a high-gloss, tangerine-hued ceiling, or a hallway papered in a cheeky print. In his first book, Jeffers presents twenty-five of his most stunning projects, divided into four sections: Collected Cool, captivating rooms that are thoughtfully layered, revealing themselves over time through myriad details; Bold Bespoke, interiors viewed through a sartorial lens, with custom elements essential to their unique style; Unabashed Glamour, rooms that make an instant impression, with their luxe finishes, sumptuous materials, and sparkle; and Casual Chic, comfortable but stylish spaces with a sense of ease from materials like linen and cotton. In each section, Jeffers shares his process and gives guidance and quick tips for recreating the look at home. Witty and exuberant, filled with details on process, colour, furniture, and accessories, Collected Cool will be an endless source of information and inspiration.

It's not the doing that matters; it's the thinking about the doing,"" said John Dewey. As a teacher, you work hard to make a positive difference in the lives of your students. But this kind of progress doesn't happen overnight, and it doesn't happen accidentally. It's the result of intentionality, planning, effort . . . and thought. The difference between learning a skill and being able to implement it effectively resides in your capacity to engage in deep, continuous thought about that skill. In other words, recognizing why you do something is often more important than knowing how to do it. To help you deepen your thinking and reflect on your capacity as an educator, Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral return to the Continuum of Self-Reflection, which they introduced to coaches and administrators in their best-selling Building Teachers' Capacity for Success, and redesign its implementation so you can take charge of your own professional growth. In these pages, you’ll find tools specifically made to enhance self-reflection on professional practice, including the Continuum of Self-Reflection and the Reflective Cycle. You'll be able to assess your current self-reflective tendencies, identify opportunities to reflect on your instruction, and begin to forge a path toward continuous growth and educational excellence.

As a school administrator, instructional coach, or teacher-leader, you know that reflective teachers are effective teachers. But how can you help teachers become self-reflective practitioners whose thoughtful approach translates into real gains for student achievement? In Creating a Culture of Reflective Practice — a companion volume to their teacher-oriented book Teach, Reflect, Learn — authors Pete Hall and Alisa Simeral draw on lessons learned from educators across grade levels, content areas, and district demographics to present a definitive guide to developing a culture of reflective practice in your school.Hall and Simeral expand on ideas originally presented in Building Teachers' Capacity for Success to help you gain a clear understanding of your role and responsibilities — and those of your teachers — within each stage of the Continuum of Self-Reflection. Armed with the book's real-life examples and research-based tools, you'll learn how to determine the current location of all stakeholders on the continuum and how teacher-leadership activities, transformational feedback, and strategic coaching can move them forward. The end result? A schoolwide culture that both values reflection and uses it to ensure that teachers — and their students — reach their fullest potential.

With recent changes in the curriculum and standards in language arts and mathematics, parents often are challenged to find ways to help their children be successful in their learning endeavors. While parents want to be involved in their children’s education, they are often unsure of their role in their children’s learning and the best ways to help their children to succeed academically. Moreover, with the changes in how math and literacy are being taught, parents often struggle with helping even first grade children with their homework. In this book we set out to alleviate this struggle, by offering parents a resource they can use to navigate their child’s education, communicate with teachers, and support their children in learning mathematics and literacy. After providing an overview of the current educational climate and tips for communication with teachers, we share strategies and suggestions parents can use to assist their children in language arts and mathematics. We provide detailed descriptions of activities, games, books, and conversations that connect with what children will be learning at each grade level.

A spiritual journey may take many forms, from Dante's descent to the pits of Hell and up the other side to the bliss of Paradise, to Pilgrim's progress (or even to Billy Pilgrim, unstuck in time in Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five). It could be Elijah running headlong into the desert, or Jonah being flung ashore and shouting in Nineveh, a petulant prophet to the end. Faith can be carried like pennies in the pocket or worn like a coat of many colors. Abraham and Moses, Mary and Peter--all of them carried their faith, and all of them had their doubts. Doubt is the companion of faith, and the mystery that bonds them together comes out in stories. These are stories of faith, doubt, and mystery. Not all who wander are lost.
