Edgar Allan Poe and C. Auguste Dupin strive unravel a mystery involving old enemies, lost soul-mates, ornithomancy, and the legendary jewel of Peru. Philadelphia, 1844. As violent tensions escalate between nativists and recent Irish immigrants, Edgar Allan Poe's fears for the safety of his wife, Virginia, and mother-in-law, Muddy, are compounded when he receives a parcel of mummified bird parts. Has his nemesis returned to settle an old score? Just as odd is the arrival of Helena Loddiges, a young heiress who demands Poe's help to discover why her lover died at the city's docks on his return from an expedition to Peru. Poe is skeptical of her claims of having received messages from birds--and visitations from her lover's ghost--but when Miss Loddiges is kidnapped, he and his friend C. Auguste Dupin must unravel a mystery involving old enemies, lost soul-mates, ornithomancy, and the legendary jewel of Peru.

Pollin and Ridgely have included the complete texts of all the reviews and articles Poe wrote for the Messenger (excluding a few texts published elsewhere in the series). Poe's writings are organized in chronological sections corresponding to the actual monthly issue, and each monthly section is further divided into logical subsections. The section for January 1836, for example, comprises an introductory "Headnote," a series of numbered "Texts," and a final subsection of informative "Notes." This method of organization provides a vivid picture of the month-to-month operations of the Messenger, where Poe worked as an editor (or editorial assistant) from 1835 to the beginning of 1837. Since this was Poe's first full-time job in the publishing industry, the book also provides a unique perspective on his origins as a critic and magazinist.

With Poe every entry into a subject is attractive, without violence, like a whirlwind. His solemnity surprises the mind, and keeps it on the watch. We feel at once that something grave is at stake... No man has told with greater magic the exceptions of human life and nature, the ardours of the curiosities of convalescence, the close of seasons charged with enervating splendours, sultry weather, humid and misty, where the south wind softens and distends the nerves, like the chords of an instrument; where the eyes are filled with tears that come not from the heart; hallucination at first giving place to doubt, soon convinced and full of reasons as a book; absurdity installing itself in the intellect, and governing it with a crushing logic; hysteria usurping the place of will, a contradiction established between the nerves and the mind, and man out of all accord expressing grief by laughter. He analyses them where they are most fugitive; he poises the imponderable, and describes in that minute and scientific manner, whose effects are terrible, all that imaginary world which floats around the nervous man, and conducts him on to evil.
