"Essential reading for all those who seek to understand the worldwide opposition to neoliberal globalisation and the social and environmental destruction wrought by industrial agriculture. The hopes that have propelled peasants and small farmers to cross-border unity and action are on proud display in this moving account." Marc Edelman, Professor of Anthropology, City University of New York"A ground-breaking study of the rise of a significant new transnational political and social force, the Via Campesina."Philip McMichael, International Professor of Development Sociology, Cornell University"How the Via Campesina survived and thrived to champion food sovereignty, gender equity and global grassroots solidarity is an inspiring tale, beautifully told."Terisa Turner, Associate Professor, Sociology and Anthropology, University of GuelphLa Via Campesina is one of the world's largest and most important transnational social movements. Formed in 1993, it brings together rural women, peasants, indigenous communities, small-scale farmers and farm workers from around the world. Comprising millions of people, it is a leading force against the globalization of a neo-liberal and corporate-led model of agriculture. This book explores the movement from the inside. Annette Aurelie Desmarais, a former grain farmer and long time participant in La Via Campesina shows how peasants and small-scale farmers have found the strength to challenge multinational agribusiness corporations and international institutions whose power and influence increasingly dictate government policy. Contemporary American Drama

Contemporary American Drama

Annette Saddik

Edinburgh University Press
2007
sidottu
This book explores the development of contemporary theatre in the United States in its historical, political and theoretical dimensions. It focuses on representative plays and performance texts that experiment with form and content, discussing influential playwrights and performance artists such as Tennessee Williams, Adrienne Kennedy, Sam Shepard, Tony Kushner, Charles Ludlum, Anna Deavere Smith, Karen Finley and Will Power, alongside avant-garde theatre groups. Saddik traces the development of contemporary drama since 1945, and discusses the cross-cultural impact of postwar British and European innovations on American theatre from the 1950s to the present day in order to examine the performance of American identity. She argues that contemporary American theatre is primarily a postmodern drama of inclusion and diversity that destabilizes the notion of fixed identity and questions the nature of reality. Key features * Examines the influence of international figures such as Aristotle, Brecht, Artaud and Boal who are central to theatre as a discipline * Explores realistic and anti-realistic styles of American drama and their political and social implications, along with key critical terms and movements * Places the complexity of contemporary American drama within its political, sexual and ethnic contexts * Includes rare images from La MaMa Archive/Ellen Stewart Private Collection * Discusses in detail Stairs to the Roof and Camino Real by Tennessee Williams, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible by Arthur Miller, Dutchman and The Slave by Amira Baraka, Funnyhouse of a Negro by Adrienne Kennedy, The Tooth of Crime and True West by Sam Shepherd and American Buffalo by David Mamet as well as a range of other texts and performers.

Hollywood Theory, Non-Hollywood Practice

Hollywood Theory, Non-Hollywood Practice

Annette Davison

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2004
sidottu
Relatively little has been written about film scores and soundtracks outside of Hollywood cinema. Hollywood Theory, Non-Hollywood Practice addresses this gap by looking at the practices of film soundtrack composition for non-Hollywood films made after 1980. Annette Davison argues that since the mid-1970s the model of the classical Hollywood score has functioned as a form of dominant ideology in relation to which alternative scoring and soundtrack practices may assert themselves. The first part of the book explores some of the key theoretical issues and debates in film studies and film music studies. The second part comprises a series of case studies of non-Hollywood scores. Starting with Jean Luc Godard's Prénom: Carmen (1983), Davison argues that the film's score offers a deconstruction of the relationship between sound and image proposed by classical Hollywood film. Derek Jarman's The Garden (1990) takes the debate a step further in its exploration of the possibility that a film's soundtrack may be liberated from slavery to the image track. Wings of Desire (1987) directed by Wim Wenders offers, Davison believes, a negotiation between classical and alternative scoring and soundtrack practices; while David Lynch's Wild at Heart (1990) actually fully integrates scoring and soundtrack practices so that sounds and dialogue are used in musical ways. Seeking to stimulate debate about the aesthetics and interpretation of film scores and soundtracks in general, this book develops an important synthesis of film studies and musicology.

Traditional Welsh Home Cooking

sidottu
Traditional Welsh recipes are characterized by what was the standard diet of the local working population - coalminers, fishermen, farmers and labourers - and the ingredients available to them. For many years, Welsh cooking was a well-kept secret, with recipes passed from generation to generation only by word of mouth. This oral tradition means that recipes often have regional variations, and have also been altered over the years to adjust to times of hardship or plenty. After an exploration of the geography and culinary history of the region, this book presents a selection of traditional Welsh fare from the hills, valleys and fishing villages.
