A collection of five thematically related, darkly humorous one-act plays from award-winning playwright Andrew Biss, in which ordinary people find themselves in the most extraordinary circumstances. An Honest Mistake: Madge has long since surrendered herself to the verbal abuse doled out to her by her belligerent husband, Stan. On this particular evening, however, her fears of a rat beneath the floorboards, combined with her absent-mindedness, result in her dishing up Stan not only his evening meal - but also his just deserts A Familiar Face: Two elderly women, old friends, meet up in a London caf shortly after one them - Dora - has been widowed. As Dora's grief and anger intensifies, her good friend Eydie begins to suspect there may be more to her angst than the loss of a loved one. When Dora calmly removes from her shopping bag a large glass jar containing a human head, discussions over its mysterious identity, and how it came to be lodged in the cupboard under her stairs, lead to some startling revelations. A Slip of the Tongue: Miss Perkins, tired of the constant innuendos and sexual insinuations of her employer, Mr. Reams, has decided to hand in her notice. On this particular morning, however, Mr. Reams decides to take things one step further. Unfortunately, due to Miss Perkins' nervous disposition and a telephone that rings at a disturbingly high pitch, he soon discovers he's bitten off more than he can chew...or at least, one of them has. An Embarrassing Odour: Ethel, a widowed pensioner, sits down one evening to tackle her daily crossword puzzle. Suddenly her tranquil world is turned upside down when a burglar enters her home, believing it to be unoccupied. As Ethel vainly attempts to forge a relationship with the violent delinquent before her, his concerns lie only with getting his hands on her valuables...that and the unpleasant smell that fills the room. What is that smell? A Stunning Confession: During an evening in front of the television a staid married couple suddenly find themselves having to confront a new reality.
One of the defining texts of twentieth-century Catalan fiction, written by one of its most innovative and cherished writers, Salvador Espriu's "Ariadne in the Grotesque Labyrinth" is a collection of thirty-four short stories in which the twists and turns of action, character, and place are as winding and sumptuous as the legendary maze of its title. Originally published in 1935 in the midst of great countrywide political and social upheaval, these stories are a mirror, a grotesque mirror, held up to Catalan and Spanish society. Infused with a deep sense of mythic power, blending social realism with lush modernist experiment, " Ariadne in the Grotesque Labyrinth" is a triumph of style. Perhaps best known for his poetry, Espriu's rich lyricism and highly evocative use of the Catalan language are here brought to life in the poet Rowan Ricardo Phillips's remarkable English-language translation of a classic of world literature.

Strauss' opera was originally composed to serve as a kind of an added commentary to a 1912 performance of Moliere's classic play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (in German translation), for which he also provided incidental music. This unusual premiere took place in Stuttgart in October of 1912 but was not well-received. After a couple of additional unsuccessful performances, Strauss and Hofmannsthal (who wrote the libretto for the opera) decided to add a prologue to the opera to explain how the classical Greek tragedy ended up mixed with a farce set in Paris performed by a commedia dell'arte troupe. This is the version performed today, and its premiere took place in Vienna's Hofoper on October 4, 1916 with Franz Schalk conducting the cast and orchestra. Offered here is a beautifully reproduced facsimile of the vocal score arranged by Otto Singer which was published in 1916 by the Berlin firm Adolf F rstner. Unlike so many reprints one encounters these days, this one has been very carefully checked to make sure the entire work is present. To enhance its usefulness for performers, students and those interested in opera, it has also been printed in a very readable A4 (8.27 x 11.69) format.
