This is the story of a group of misfits who become a self proclaimed 'family of choice'. By turns poignant, funny, and frightening -- with heroes of both the two-legged and four-legged variety.
Forty classroom-tested, classroom-ready literature-based strategies for teaching in the K–8 content areasGrounded in theory and best-practices research, this practical text provides teachers with 40 strategies for using fiction and non-fiction trade books to teach in five key content areas: language arts and reading, social studies, mathematics, science, and the arts. Each strategy provides everything a teacher needs to get started: a classroom example that models the strategy, a research-based rationale, relevant content standards, suggested books, reader-response questions and prompts, assessment ideas, examples of how to adapt the strategy for different grade levels (K–2, 3–5, and 6–8), and ideas for differentiating instruction for English language learners and struggling students. Throughout the book, student work samples and classroom vignettes bring the content to life.
Carole Fletcher's story opens on a November morning in 1975. She began this day as a striking young teacher in a happy relationship; a horse lover and car enthusiast -- ultimately, a young woman eager for what lay ahead. But a gasoline explosion changed all that, leaving her with second- and third-degree burns over sixty-five percent of her body. At day's end, surgeons warned she had a one-in-ten chance of surviving the night and that even if she did, it would be more than likely she would never walk again -- let alone ride a horse.Carole surprised everyone: her family, her doctors, even herself. After seven months in the hospital and twenty-eight skin graft surgeries, she began to ride her beloved horse, Bailey. Thanks to the therapeutic nature of riding, she slowly regained almost full use of her legs. And though more surgery and almost four years of rehabilitation would follow, Carole eventually plunged into the world of performance with a clever trick horse named Dial.Carole Fletcher tells an inspiring and eloquent story of recovery and rebirth. Healed by Horses offers a compelling account of one woman's uncommon courage and perseverance, and illustrates the extraordinary connection possible between humans and horses, and how that bond can restore, motivate, and heal.
Life is sometimes like a box of chocolates, because you never know what you're going to get. I wrote this book because I know from experience that God can do anything; and because my intimacy levels have increased with God more and more, it is the most wonderful relationship I have ever experienced. I want others to experience this kind of intimacy because you never know love until you fall in love with God. Knowing God loves you, and that whatever happens in life He's with you, is vital. It causes levels of intimacy that you can only imagine until it happens. I am overwhelmed with joy and peace amid my trials because I know God is able to do anything.
This collection of poetry and anecdotes was created when the author began expressing some of her "Captured Moments" in rhyme. Over the past twenty years, her poems have expanded from writing just about Israel to writing some personal expressions about her faith, and the faith of her two sons, both of whom are mentally disabled and are unable to express their Christian faith in the traditional way. The poems and anecdotes recall events from the past, giving them a place within her heart, as well as giving them voice by sharing her faith in Jesus Christ through poetry.

A former Parisian living in New York, French Vogue correspondent Carole Sabas was often approached by visiting friends and colleagues looking for recommendations on where to get a good blow dry, a quick eyebrow shaping, or a great place to meet friends for drinks after a long day at a fashion show. So many people asked, in fact, that she produced a small guide that she gave out for free and which was filled with all sorts of useful advice. Sabas has now expanded this guide to include sections titled “Eating and Drinking,” “Beauty,” “Health,” “Fashion and Decoration,” “Shopping,” “Art” and an eclectic selection of odds and ends called “Might Be Useful One Day.” Each entry is written with a light touch and in a friendly tone, and includes a description with hints about when to go, who to ask for and what to order, as well as location and contact information. The inclusion of local fashion celebrities’ favourite places to frequent leaves the reader confidently in-the-know.

As a toast to success, a drowning of sorrows, a rite of passage, and the fuel for most social activities, alcohol plays a central role in our culture. Alcohol generates nearly $160 billion in US revenues annually and is a major source of tax revenue, making the stakes in the modern debate over its use, misuse, and regulation staggeringly high. Factor in the costs of alcohol-related illness and addiction, alcohol-related deaths, evolving social mores, legal precedents, and increasingly aggressive advertising and marketing and an already controversial subject becomes a heated, vigorous, and complicated battle. Synthesizing the divergent, interdisciplinary perspectives on alcohol sales, regulation, and consumption into a cohesive whole, Social and Economic Control of Alcohol: The 21st Amendment in the 21st Century draws on the expertise of key academic and legal figures to become the seminal volume in this burgeoning field of inquiry. Amidst a rapidly changing milieu of regulations, cultures, and emotions, it objectively re-examines issues surrounding the regulation and sale of alcohol with unparalleled breadth, depth, and unbiased focus. The book examines the foundation and basis for our current regulatory policy and how that foundation has shifted dramatically with changes in the law, marketing, consumer influence, and the impact of alcohol on society. With strong and relevant comparisons to historical studies and evaluations of past legislation, this book presents a critical analysis and definition of concepts and applications regarding alcohol control. Double-blind, peer-reviewed contributions outline specific concerns related to the development of new laws and policies, and consider how those policies may affect individuals, organizations, law, and society in general. Highlighting current findings and trends, this volume allows for a better understanding of the potential correlation and causal relationship between regulation, sales, and consumption patterns.
