RMS Empress of Britain

RMS Empress of Britain

Clive Harvey

The largest ship ever built for the transatlantic route to Canada was the 'Empress of Britain'. But it wasn't just size that made the 'Empress' Britain's greatest liner - her interiors were the finest ever seen on the Canadian route. Designers from W. Heath Robinson to Edmund Dulac created sumptuous interiors while the naval architects of John Brown's at Clydebank designed the exterior. In winter, the 'Empress of Britain' became the most luxurious cruise ship, undertaking world cruises to such exotic locations as Hong Kong, Cuba, Singapore, and South America. In 1941, her career was to be cut short by a lone German bomber that straddled her with bombs. She caught fire and was left to burn, being finished off by a U-boat. It was a tragic end for Britain's greatest liner.

Normandie

On an icy cold day in February 1942, while undergoing conversion into a troopship, the former French Line flagship, Normandie, the most glamorous liner ever to sail the North Atlantic, was destroyed by fire and a legend was born. Normandie was designed in the midst of the Depression and was built as a showcase of French art and design. Costing over $60 million, she was literally State of the Art. While the conversion was underway, a pile of lifejackets caught fire. The untrained staff could not control the ensuing blaze and the NY Fire Brigade pumped in millions of gallons of water in a vain effort to put out the flames. Only a few hours after the first flames she was a burnt out hulk and capsized at her berth. The loss of the Normandie was one of the most tragic liner losses. Her artwork was second to none and her design was way ahead of any of her competitors. She has been sorely missed since.

The Metropolitan Line

The Metropolitan Line

The Metropolitan Railway can claim to have had an influence on the evolution of our railway system out of all proportion to its tracks reaching just forty-seven miles from London. However it was the world’s first underground passenger railway, built in 1863 to ease the traffic congestion of a growing London and thus creating the first metro system. Embraced by the notorious Victorian entrepreneur Sir Edward Watkin as part of his ultimately unsuccessful ambition to link Manchester and Paris by rail, the Metropolitan decided to use Watkin’s land to create the iconic ‘Metro-land’, an Arcadian form of suburbia embracing affordable housing with easy commuting to London. The brand soon became accepted as the generic description of a lifestyle and by the end of the First World War Metro-land represented the appealing factors of aspiration and affordability. This fascinating history of London’s first tube line and the people involved in its evolution brings us up to date with the latest plans for this idiosyncratic railway in line with the coming 2012 Olympics. Featuring many previously unpublished photographs, it is a must for all railway enthusiasts and social historians.

Derby at War presents a superb collection of over 200 images supported by informative captions. Together they portray the experiences of Derby people during the Second World War. This is not a definitive account of the war years, but an attempt to recapture the atmosphere during what was perhaps the most important period in Britain’s recent history – a time when our nation’s towns and villages fought for their very survival against a determined enemy, in a war that directly touched the lives of everyone. Many of these images are rare and so offer a unique glimpse into these bygone days. Names and dates are provided where possible, revealing historical and anecdotal detail that gives life to the scenes and personalities captured through the camera lens. This absorbing collection will evoke wartime memories for many, and will also inspire younger readers through images of hope, strength and unity.

Images of 150 Years of the Metropolitan Railway

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, this book endeavours to capture in pictures the beguiling character of the Metropolitan Railway, which started as the world’s first underground railway between Paddington and Farringdon, but grew to create iconic Metro-Land, later immortalised by John Betjeman. However, this evolution was influenced by the notorious Victorian entrepreneur, Edward Watkin, which resulted in the ‘Met’ having to share some of its routes with a mainline railway – indeed it still does so. The other major change was the reluctant absorption in 1933 into the new London Transport, which sought to make it adopt their standard practices. Although this was suspended due to the Second World War, in which bombing took a heavy toll on the vital cross-London lines, by 1961 LT was able to replace most of the Met steam services with electrification. Now these trains are themselves being replaced by new stock, marking another facet in the complex story of the idiosyncratic ‘Met’ cherished by millions of travellers.
