Crystals and gemstones have been a source of fascination since Neolithic times; they endure when the bones of those they have adorned have turned to dust. Such was the profundity of crystal lore that ancient peoples incorporated crystals and gemstones as dynamic and potent symbols in their legends and myths. In Crystal Legends Moyra Caldecott approaches crystals from a new angle, retelling the stories drawn from world mythology that show the significance of crystals and precious stones as symbolic icons in a variety of traditions. She gives in-depth commentaries on their esoteric meaning and their significance for us today. From Buddhist and biblical texts, European and Egyptian tales, Arthurian and Atlantean legends, this fascinating collection will appeal to anyone with an interest in the power of crystals and the eternal journey of the soul towards enlightenment.

Writer, poet, lecturer, broadcaster and man-of -letters, John Jordan (1930-88) was a distinguished scholar-critic in the Dublin of his day, teaching English at University College Dublin (1955-66) and at the Memorial University of Newfoundland at St John’s (1966-7). A true cosmopolitan, and formidably read, his interests ranged from drama to literature in all its forms. This gathering of prose essays and reviews are taken from the columns of the Irish Press, Hibernia, The Crane Bag and Irish University Review and Poetry Ireland (a magazine he refounded in 1962), as well as from private unpublished papers. They focus on the mid-century canon of Irish and Anglo-American writing: Joyce, Yeats, Lawrence, Eliot, Kavanagh, O’Casey, Behan, Clarke, Stuart, Bowen, Gregory, Synge, Shaw and Wilde, as well as on the new voices of a succeeding generation: Kinsella, Cronin, Hutchinson, Heaney, and Durcan. With occasional literary detours to Russia, France and Spain, Jordan brings a continental sensibility to bear on his literary milieu.

Silent and yet still able to communicate, stones deliver their messages wordlessly, reaching out to us, touching our hearts to be understood by our whole being. When presented as gifts, they are a beautiful way of expressing good wishes, of offering greetings or congratulations - and they can help those wishes come true. Crystal gifts and greetings are messages of a very special kind: crystals bring strength and joy; they help us to recuperate from illness, are a source of protection and power and promote trust and bring comfort. Crystals express affection in their own way, preserving the memory of special moments and events through their very existence. Stones are more than mere words. We can see, touch and feel them, we can carry them or hold them in our hands; they make good companions in both good and bad times. They are enduring gifts, patient, always there for us, ready when we need them. It is time to give them - and us - the chance to speak.

Crystal Spirit is the story of David Hicks, arrogant and petulant son of a Welsh collier, set to escape the pit through education, but trapped into marriage and a shopkeeping job he hates. Denied his freedom he grows to maturity through the Labour movement and his experiences as a volunteer in the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil War.This is a gripping and affecting story, persuasive and realistic, sympathetic in its portrayal of life in the Depression and full of remarkable scenes from the Spanish Civil War. Closely researched, Crystal Spirit brings to life a period which has almost slipped from memory. It is a moving testament to those who suffered in Wales and Spain, yet remained undefeated by the horrors of poverty and a brutal war.Roger Granelli is the author of Dark Edge, the first novel to emerge from the 1984 miners' strike; Out of Nowhere, a tale of murder and jazz in the USA; Status Zero, a bleak account of crime and deprivation; and Resolution, a subtle and compelling examination of human passion.

This survey of the important types of inorganic and organic crystal structures treats its subject thoroughly and in sufficient depth for undergraduate modules in chemistry courses. Features of this book are the instructions for 3D stereoviewing which is central to a full appreciation of the presentation. Clear directions for making your own stereo have been provided in the book, which enables readers to examine the plentiful stereo of lattices and crystal structures which are illustrated. The introductory chapter explains point-group and space-group symmetry insofar as required to understand lattices and crystal structures. Crystal structures are sub-divided according to the atomic force mainly responsible for cohesion in the solid state, The descriptions of the structures are gi in crystallographic terms, including data on the space group, molecular symmetry and molecular geometry. Discussions of bonding theory for each sub-division of the structures enhance and strengthen the author’s presentation. The book stems from the author’s successful lecture courses, tested and refined in class teaching. It draws as necessary on equilibrium thermodynamics and other chemical topics, with avoidance of advanced mathematics, A level being the prerequisite.

Plaiting and braiding have a long history. They encompass decorating hair, weaving and basket-making as well as making knots. So it is surprising that John Gorham seems to have been the first person to have looked at the subject systematically. The main part of this book is a reprint of his 1888 work on plaiting crystal models has been an inspiration to many others working in this field, notably Robert Pargeter and Jean Pedersen. Along with Robert Pargeter and James Brunton's articles in the Mathematical Gazette Gorham's work is here reproduced. The ideas were extensively covered in Mathematical Models by Cundy and Rollett, also reprinted by Tarquin. It is through this book and Pargeter's article that Gorham's techniques have been kept alive. The book itself has been rare and most references to it are only as a result of Pargeter having quoted it as his source. Through this reprint the work can be more widely read and admired by mathematicians, plaiters and crystallographers, as well as historians of science and mathematics.
