Discursive Constructions of the Suicidal Process

Discursive Constructions of the Suicidal Process

Dariusz Galasinski; Justyna Ziólkowska

Bloomsbury Academic

What is suicide? When does suicide start and when does it end? Who is involved? Examining narratives of suicide through a discourse analytic framework, Discursive Constructions of the Suicidal Process demonstrates how linguistic theories and methodologies can help answer these questions and cast light upon what suicide involves and means, both for those who commit an act and their loved ones. Engaging in close analysis of suicide letters written before the act and post-hoc narratives from after the event, this book is the first qualitative study to view suicide not as a single event outside time, but as a time-extended process. Exploring how suicide is experienced and narrated from two temporal perspectives, Dariusz Galasinski and Justyna Ziólkowska introduce discourse analysis to the field of suicidology. Arguing that studying suicide narratives and the reality they represent can add significantly to our understanding of the process, and in particular its experiences and meanings, Discursive Constructions of the Suicidal Process demonstrates the value of discourse analytic insights in informing, enriching and contextualising our knowledge of suicide.
Chalcolithic and Bronze Age Pottery from the Field Survey in Northwestern Cyprus 1992¬-1999
The material presented here is derived from an extensive survey conducted by the Polis-Pyrgos Archaeological Project (PAP) in 1992 1994, 1996 1997, and 1999 in the area between the western bank of the Chrysochou River and Kato Pyrgos in northwestern Cyprus. This is the first comprehensive publication of ceramics and ground stone artefacts from the neighbouring area of Polis tis Chrysochous (Polis), formerly ancient Marion and Arsinoe. The pottery constitutes the bulk of the material. Because of the number of artefacts the material will be presented in two volumes. The main task of each contribution is to present the artefacts recorded in its local, regional and whole island context, as far as possible. The second volume will contain post-prehistoric ceramics, Chalcolithic to Iron Age ground stone artefacts, as well as contribution on the environment and resources. On the basis of the data examined, and despite several limitations, it has been possible to identify ten Chalcolithic and twenty-nine Bronze Age sites, and thus to generate the first picture of prehistoric occupation in northwestern Cyprus, which should no longer be perceived as terra inhabitata in that time."

Several well-established geometric and topological methods are used in this work in an application to a beautiful physical phenomenon known as the geometric phase. This book examines the geometric phase, bringing together different physical phenomena under a unified mathematical scheme. The material is presented so that graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics and physics with an understanding of classical and quantum mechanics can handle the text.

The Laws of the Knowledge Workplace

The Laws of the Knowledge Workplace

Dariusz Jemielniak

Routledge
2014
sidottu
In The Laws of the Knowledge Workplace, Dr Jemielniak has collected research-based chapters providing deep, interdisciplinary insight into knowledge professions, addressing issues of professional identity, emotion, power and authority, trust and indoctrination, and management behaviour. This leads to an examination of issues related to time and work scheduling and its bearing on play, family, symbolic sacrifices, and employee burn-out. In particular, it delves into the identity shifts between knowledge workers and managers, nepotism and turnover intentions among knowledge workers, the implementation of engineering projects, coordination problems in offshore production systems, leadership in virtual teams, decision support systems; taking into account the moral aspects of consequences, netnography as a tool for studying knowledge work, and innovative networks in the aviation industry. The accounts and studies in this book come from management, organization studies, sociology, and anthropology of work perspectives and are fully international in scope. They highlight the scale of the serious changes in occupational roles and to the meaning of work that is taking place in knowledge-intensive environments and give a pointer to what might constitute good and bad management practice in knowledge-intensive companies.
