Pilgrimage in Medieval English Literature, 700-1500
The meaning of pilgrimage and its development over 800 years, reflected in contemporary writings. Pilgrims are so frequently encountered in the pages of Middle English literature that it is easy to take their presence, and their significance, for granted. The pilgrimage motif is all too frequently simply accepted as a 'given'of medieval spirituality, its presence noted but its meaning seldom analysed. This study therefore asks several fundamental but hitherto largely ignored questions. What exactly did pilgrimage mean to medieval writers? How well didvarious understandings of pilgrimage combine within medieval spirituality? Who were the true pilgrims - those who travelled to saints' shrines, those who withdrew into the cloister or the anchorite's cell, or those who simply walked the path of daily obedience? In answering these questions, this wide-ranging survey of the origins and development of the pilgrim motif examines the development of Christian pilgrimage through the Bible, the writings of the Fathers, the influences of classical pagan religion and the impulses of popular devotion. It then traces the ways in which the resulting multiple meanings of pilgrimage were incorporated into medieval spirituality and literature, offering fresh perspectives on Old English poetry and prose together with Middle English texts such a the Canterbury Tales, Piers Plowman, Pearl and the Book of Margery Kempe. Dr DEE DYAS is director of the Society for the Study of Medieval Christianity and Culture.

When Captain Tugalong was new, he traveled up and down the harbor directing big ships in and out safely. Now tied in his slip, Tugalong can feel his cabin jiggle with broken glass and cracked wood. One day, Tugalong sees a most beautiful sight: a lovely sleek sailboat coming toward him, sparkling in the noonday sun. As Captain Tugalong and Sun Dancer (Sunnie for short) become friends, the old salt teaches the novice sailboat all about boating safety, and the youthful readers of Captain Tugalong learn the ropes at the same time. Here are all the basics of nautical knowledge: nomenclature, safety equipment, rules of the road, and methods for handling emergencies at sea. Picture book–ages 0-6.

The lyricism of Bread & Water interweaves culinary insights and literary essays to pose fundamental questions about how we live----and how we feed----the larger hungers that motivate our lives. "When I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it . . ." —MFK Fisher When chef and writer dee Hobsbawn-Smith left the city for rural life on a farm in Saskatchewan, she planned to replace cooking and teaching with poetry and prose. But—as begin the best stories—her next adventure didn't quite work that way. Food trickled into her poems, her essays, her fiction. And water poured into her property in both Saskatchewan and Calgary during two devastating floods. Bread & Water uses lyrical prose to examine those two fundamental ingredients, and to probe the essential questions on how to live a life. Hobsbawn-Smith uses food to explore the hungers of the human soul: wilder hungers that loiter beyond cravings for love. She kneads themes of floods and place, grief and loss; the commonalities of refugees and Canadians through common tastes in food; cooking methods, grandmothers and mentors; the politics of local and sustainable food; parenting; male privilege in the restaurant world; and the challenges of aging gracefully. It is an elegant collection that weaves joy into exploring the quotidian in search for larger meaning.
