Frederick the Great's Army (2)

Frederick the Great's Army (2)

Philip Haythornthwaite

Osprey Publishing
1991
nidottu
Throughout the wars undertaken by Frederick the Great, probably his greatest resource was his infantry. It is a mark of the king's determination that despite wars which almost destroyed both Prussia and its army (such as the Seven Years' War), he was able to maintain its numbers – even if the quality declined as the attritional campaigns took their toll.Philip Haythornthwaite examines the uniforms, tactics and organisation of Frederick's infantry in detail – a fighting force that contested battles such as Mollwitz, Hohenfriedberg, Kesselsdorf, Liegnitz, Burkersdorf and the siege of Prague.

The Alexander Technique is practised by many thousands of people throughout the world and has been the subject of dozens of books and numerous articles. This book is not about the technique, but about its originator, his origins as a descendant of convicts transported to Tasmania, and his life spent developing, practising and teaching his methods; first in Australia, then in England and America. In this well-researched book the author (the great-niece of Alexander) provides a fascinating picture of his background, family and early career.
The Principles of Scientific Management, by Frederick Taylor
Read the American classic that inspired Shigeo Shingo! Frederick W. Taylor's The Principles of Scientific Managementwas a mental revolution that spawned the very ideas of process improvement, equity and efficiency between workers and management, and the attainability of high production with low labor costs. Taylor discusses eliminating waste by using the system he developed over the course of his career and how it applies to individual, as well as collective, improvement initiatives. As the basis of modern organizational efficiency, this instrumental book has motivated managers and engineers for almost 100 years.
Shop Management, by Frederick Taylor
With the growth of Lean into all sectors of manufacturing and service industries around the globe, a survey into the origins of Lean becomes vital. As English economist Maynard Keynes once said, "ideas shape the course of history," and Frederick Taylor's ideas still shape the course of history well after a century of use. Shop Management is a living lesson that shows how an innovative idea will adapt in order to survive. The purpose of Enna's Lean Origin Series is to facilitate that adaptation by publishing classic texts that are relevant to today's business needs.
NARRATIVE OF THE LIFE OF FREDERICK DOUGLASS, AN AMERICAN SLAVE
Born into slavery, Frederick Douglass ignored his master's veto on black education and taught himself to read and write. Escaping to the Northern States in 1838, Douglass became an ardent abolitionist, campaigning passionately against all aspects of human bondage. His 'Narrative' is a classic of black emancipation: a life story replete with tales of cruelty and oppression, of courage and love. Like a later victim of black subjugation - Nelson Mandela -it is Douglass' ability to control his anger and resentment in the face of almost intolerable provocation that most impresses the reader. While bitingly ironic at times, his prose remains reasoned and restrained and his compassion even allows him to pity the dehumanizing effects of slavery on the slave owners themselves. Douglass' story is all the more powerful for these qualities.

Fredrick isn't your average fox - he's funny, imaginative, and dreams of being the first fox to land on the moon. But one morning, Fredrick wakes up feeling strange. His tummy feels funny, and for the first time, he's not his usual happy self. Unsure of why he's feeling this way, Fredrick starts his day and meets his best friend, Ada, who quickly notices something's wrong. Fredrick talks to Ada about how he feels, and she helps him realise that all his little worries have stuck together, forming a giant "worry bubble" that's weighing him down. Through gentle support, kindness, and the power of friendship, Ada shows Fredrick how talking about feelings and sharing emotions can help pop that bubble of worries. Perfect for children, this heartwarming story teaches valuable lessons about managing worries, expressing emotions, and leaning on people you can trust for support. Fredrick the Fox and the Giant Worry is a must-read for families looking to inspire kindness, connection, and emotional resilience in young readers.

This is the first and only complete biography of Frederick Walker, 1820 to 1866. Mr Walker's life was one of isolation, hardship and rejection. As Commandant of the Native Police, he was the man who stood at the front line of Australian history with his true and trusty sable force. He was much abused in his day by the squatters for his careful and clement handling of Aborigines, ami des noirs. He is still much abused and neglected today and stands accused of many high crimes and misdemeanours against humanity and the aboriginal natives of Australia. These are all gross slanders and monstrous calumnies. This treatise on his life and times is a complete defence to these infamous allegations, backed with pages of original sources. After being driven from his command of the Native Police by petty minded squatters and disloyal officers, he took up the worthy profession of a run-hunter and opened up much grazing land in southern and central Queensland, in particular, Plant Downs. He was readily enlisted in the search for Burke and Wills, the forever lamentable tragedy of Australian heroism lost to the unforgiving Outback. Frederick Walker's final act was in the service of the State of Queensland in surveying a telegraph line from Townsville to Burketown for the purposes of an overseas telegraphic link to India. He now lies in a bush grave where he fell on the road to Floraville, Leichhardt River, Queensland. Walker was a bushman par excellence, an Aboriginal Whisperer beyond comparison and an explorer without equal.

Former slave, impassioned abolitionist, brilliant writer, newspaper editor and eloquent orator whose speeches fired the abolitionist cause, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) led an astounding life. Physical abuse, deprivation and tragedy plagued his early years, yet through sheer force of character he was able to overcome these obstacles to become a leading spokesman for his people."Sincerely and earnestly hoping that this little book may do something toward throwing light on the American slave system, and hastening the glad day of deliverance to the millions of my brethren in bonds--faithfully relying upon the power of truth, love, and justice, for success in my humble efforts--and solemnly pledging myself anew to the sacred cause, --I subscribe myself, FREDERICK DOUGLASS ."
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass (Canon Classics Worldview Edition)
"He is a lover of his country who rebukes and does not excuse its sins." -Frederick DouglassFrederick Douglass is born a slave (perhaps the bastard son of his owner), separated from his mother at a young age, and raised in ignorance for a horizon-less life of servitude. In his own words, Douglass tells about the habitual mistreatment he suffered-the graphic abuse only matched in intensity by his continual desire for freedome. Learning to read and becoming a Christian transformed Douglass's life, and his escape from slavery set him on the path to become a powerful orator and one of America's greatest champions for human rights. This Canon Classic was written during the violent decades of the mid-1800s and began to open the public's eyes to the horrors of slavery in America. Unlike many other thrift editions, our classics are printed on thicker text stock and feature individualized designs that prioritize readability by means of proper margins, leading, characters per line, font, trim size, etc. Each book's materials and layout combine to make the classics a simple and striking addition to classrooms and homes, ideal for introducing the best of literary culture and human experience to the next generation.
