Alfred Valdmanis is best known in Canada for his infamous role in Premier Joey Smallwood's scheme to industrialize Newfoundland. A Latvian immigrant, he was appointed Director General of Economic Development in 1950 with the understanding that through his connections to Europe he could entice German and Baltic industrialists to the isolated, rural island. His influence was brought to an abrupt end when, in 1954, he was charged with defrauding the government. The media, latching on to his murky past and his possible affiliation with war criminals, made him the scapegoat of Newfoundland's problems, painting him as part comedian, part sinister villain. This was not the first time his name was connected with controversial issues. Valdmanis's wily political manoeuvring is more the stuff of fiction than history. Between 1938, at age 29, and his ironic downfall in the safe haven of Canada, he was a finance minister of pre-war Latvia, a government official during the Soviet invasion, a shrewd collaborator under the Nazi occupation, then, a friend to the Allies, a spokesman for Latvian POW and displaced persons, and an adviser to the government of Canada. In this first serious biography of Alfred Valdamis historian Gerhard Bassler casts the story of this political manipulator and chameleon in new terms: the often tragic consequences of the will to survive.

First of all, it can be stated that the image does not show an everyday scene. It appears as a kind of man made surrounding. But everyone can accept the following statements about this image: 1. The image shows a snapshot of an assembly line. 2. The robot in front is screwing. 3. There is no person in the working area of the robots. 4. All objects on the conveyor belt are worked on by robots. There are no free objects on the belt.

Second Order Differential Equations presents a classical piece of theory concerning hypergeometric special functions as solutions of second-order linear differential equations. The theory is presented in an entirely self-contained way, starting with an introduction of the solution of the second-order differential equations and then focusingon the systematic treatment and classification of these solutions. Each chapter contains a set of problems which help reinforce the theory. Some of the preliminaries are covered in appendices at the end of the book, one of which provides an introduction to Poincaré-Perron theory, and the appendix also contains a new way of analyzing the asymptomatic behavior of solutions of differential equations. This textbook is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering interested in Ordinary and Partial Differntial Equations. This Brief describes the concept and realization of gene therapy for HIV from the unique historic perspective and insight of two pioneers of the clinical applications of stem cell gene therapy for HIV.Gerhard Bauer applied ribozyme-anti-HIV and other vectors to manufacture clinical grade, HIV-resistant hematopoietic stem cells for the first patients that received stem cell gene therapy for HIV, including the first child in the world and the first fully marrow-ablated HIV infected patient. Joseph Anderson developed the most recent and most potent combination anti-HIV lentiviral vectors and pluripotent stem cell applications for HIV gene therapy and tested these in the appropriate in vitro and vivo models, paving the way for novel HIV gene therapy approaches to possibly cure patients.In Gene Therapy for HIV, Bauer and Anderson discuss the unique aspects of this therapy, including its limitations and proper safety precautions and outline a path for a possible functional cure for HIV using stem cell gene therapy based on a cure already achieved with a bone marrow stem cell transplantation performed in Germany using donor stem cells with a naturally arising CCR5 mutation. In addition, the Brief provides a thorough and methodical explanation of the basics of gene therapy, gene therapy vector development, in vitro and in vivo models for HIV gene therapy and clinical applications of HIV gene therapy, including Good Manufacturing Practices.

Dies ist die inhaltlich unver nderte Neuauflage des 2007 erschienen Buches "Tools + Spiele." Aus der Rezension der Erstauflage von Prof. Michl: Das Buch hat mehrfachen Reiz: Es macht viele "Tools" nicht nur billiger, es vermittelt auch den Spa beim gemeinsamen Basteln und ermutigt immer wieder zu kreativen L sungen. Meistens sind diese bungen bekannt, der Reiz von Etzels Vorschl gen liegt daher eher in den Variationen und Erweiterungen. Insgesamt sind es 15 bungen und Spiele. In der bersicht werden die handwerkliche Komplexit t und der Materialaufwand ber cksichtigt. W hrend Gefangenen-Dilemma, Stellplatz und Gummi-Spedition keine gro en berraschungen bieten, finden sich bei der Papiertaschen-Fabrik und beim Zauberstab pfiffige Varianten und Hinweise. Die Papiertaschen-Fabrik ist eine der vielen bungs-Varianten zum Change-Management und eignet sich aber auch bestens daf r, Produktionsprozesse bewusst zu machen. Man muss nur darauf kommen - oder von Etzel darauf gebracht werden - dass mit Flipchartpapier sehr schnell Zauberst be hergestellt werden k nnen. Ebenso faszinierend ist auch der Papierflugzeugbau (S. 60 ff), mit dem F hrung, Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit thematisiert werden k nnen. Auch wenn Leonardos Br cke nichts Neues f r Trainer ist, so sind doch die Hinweise auf Variationsm glichkeiten mit Schaschlikst bchen und sten aus dem Wald und auf die Interaktionsm glichkeiten zwischen mehreren Gruppen sehr reizvoll. Sehr anregend sind auch die Konstruktionshinweise zum Bau eines Hei luftballons. Allerdings muss hier h chste Vorsicht walten, denn von brennenden Hei luftballons geht in trockenen Sommers durchaus eine Brandgefahr aus. Auch bei den restlichen bungen gelingt es Etzel immer wieder, zu neuen Sichtweisen und Variationen anzuregen.

In der Nacht vom 2. zum 3. Februar 1989 fand in Paraguay ein umw lzendes politisches Ereignis statt. Nach fast 35 Jahren an der Regierung, wurde der paraguayische Staatspr sident General Alfredo Stroessner gest rzt. Damit brach eine neue Zeit in Paraguay an. Auf politischer eben setzte ein demokratischer Prozess ein, in dem auch die Mennoniten Paraguays unwiderstehlich hineingezogen wurden. Mit der neuen Staatsverfassung von 1992, an deren Ausarbeitung sich auch die Mennoniten mit Erfolg beteiligt hatten, stand dann pl tzlich auch ihnen der Weg in die nationale Politik offen. Dieses Buch befasst sich mit der umstrittenen Frage einer Beteiligung der Mennoniten an der Politik.
