The art by the Canadian Rodney Graham may come across as light-footed, yet in reality it harbors an extraordinary complexity in terms of content and its use of media. His photographs, objects, paintings, films, texts, and compositions contain references to philosophy and literature, to the history of art and culture, that range from Erasmus of Rotterdam and Edgar Allan Poe to Sigmund Freud, Richard Wagner, and Kurt Cobain. While in his early oeuvre he still approaches his sources of material with a great deal of conceptual rigor, in their playful ambivalence between scientific factuality and imaginative fiction his later works are marked primarily by an enormous and intelligent sense of humor. The Goetz Collection includes works from all of his creative phases and genres. This publication provides substantial insight into this all-rounder’s extensive artistic work of the last forty years and extends an invitation to set out on a journey of discovery.Exhibition: Sammlung Goetz, Munich 28.11.2015–23.4.2016

Truth in Black-and-White Authenticity, honesty, and character: Donald Graham’s portraits are not simply photographic recordings. Looking at them is like looking at human beings themselves, brought forth by the photographer with his virtuoso technique and sensibilities. These brilliant, strongly contrasting black-and-white photos are evidence of attitude, rather than studied gestures. Eyes and faces are not model-like masks; instead, they express the unique nature of those portrayed. Inevitably, viewers fi nd themselves in a dialogue with the images. You wonder about the stories behind these faces; though unfamiliar, they are nevertheless an emotional experience. This magnifi cent volume of pictures is the fi rst extensive publication of Graham’s haunting work. Reproduced in an elaborate triplex process, the printed photographs also possess great brilliance. On paper they seem almost tangible, fully revealing this outstanding oeuvre.

Since the mid-1960s when he started out as a fledgling critic, Dan Graham has carved out a unique role for himself, expanding the scope of the Conceptual artist to incorporate art criticism, music criticism, photography and architecture. For this volume, curator Hans Ulrich Obrist met with Graham on several occasions to discuss the artist's work, life and the numerous interests he passionately follows. The conversation thus wanders seamlessly from architecture to rock and roll, philosophy to astrology, Graham's early performance pieces, photography and articles, to the films and glass pavilions for which he is best known today. A fountain of art folklore, Graham offers recollections of friends and colleagues, art work and influences, providing an invaluable insight not only into the New York art scene of the 60s and 70s, but also one of its most influential representatives.
Brian Graham: Goin’ Down the Road with Robert Frank
An intimate and original photographic portrait of Robert Frank by a longtime friend and collaboratorRobert Frank carefully entwined his life and work, yet the man behind the camera always remained enigmatic. Goin' Down the Road with Robert Frank is a rare insider's look at Frank's world by his longtime friend and assistant Brian Graham (born 1951). Graham's photos, made between 1979 and 2019, take us behind the scenes of Frank at work--on location for his 1987 film Candy Mountain, photographing Allen Ginsberg, inspecting contact sheets--and into his private life: laughing with his wife June Leaf, exploring a thrift shop, even fixing the roof of his Bleecker Street studio. Candid and spontaneous, Graham's images are often arranged in filmic sequences that create a sense of events unfolding in real time. They are framed with nostalgic notes (by Graham and novelist/screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer) and an introduction by Ai Weiwei.
