Seit dem Erscheinen dieses Buches hat das Interesse an dem Thema nicht nachgelassen. Es scheint aber in der Zwischen zeit zu gewissen Akzentverschiebungen gekommen zu sein, besonders im Bereich der Medizin: Die Beschaftigung mit psychosomatischen Fragestellungen, und d. h. hier mit psy chologischen Problemen bei unheilbar Kranken und Sterben den, hat sich erweitert. Sie ist nicht mehr ausschlieBlich eine Sache von Psychiatern und Psychotherapeuten, sondern fm det zunehmend auch die Aufmerksamkeit anderer medizini scher Disziplinen, vor allem der Onkologie, der Strahlen therapie und der Allgemeinmedizin. Damit zusammenhangend hat sich in wenigen Jahren in der Bundesrepublik ein sehr deutlicher Wandel in der Frage der Aufklarung schwerkranker Patienten durchgesetzt. Fur die 2. Auflage war es daher notwendig, dies en Bereich, die sogen. Wahrheit am Krankenbett, abzuhandeln - auch unter dem Gesichtspunkt, inwieweit dieser Wandel mit der von mir ver tretenen These ubereinstimmt, wonach die Einstellung der Gesellschaft zur Sterblichkeit des Menschen sich heute fast ganz auf den Vorgang des Sterbens konzentriert und den Tod weitgehend ausklammert. Auch Sterbehilfe als Aufgabe der Pastoralmedizin und der Seelsorge ist seit Kubler-Ross wei terentwickelt und in die Praxis umgesetzt worden. Die Fragen nach Recht und Unrecht, Humanitat oder Inhumanitat der Euthanasie sind unverandert kontrovers geblieben. Die For derung nach Legalisierung einer "Totung ohne Einwilligung" markiert aber einen Wendepunkt, an dem die Gefahr des MiBbrauchs nicht mehr zu ubersehen ist."

Historically, the diagnosis of clinical problems in the head and neck has relied on a combination of physical examination and plain film radiography. Although Ziedses des Plantes' invention of tomography had a major impact on head and neck diagnosis, it remained for the development of CT, MR and modern nuclear medicine to truly revo lutionize the specialty. Not only have these new techniques provided better definition of osseous structures and soft tissues but adaptations of these techniques have allowed us to study function as well as anatomy. Utilization of the modern imaging techniques has also provided a springboard for new interventional techniques which promise to re define the treatment of head and neck problems. As a consequence there are now many highly specific diagnostic and therapeutic applications of these new technologies that are not familiar to the average practicing radiologist or otolaryngologist. Drs. Mukherji and Castelijns have made an important contribution by bringing together a group of outstanding authors from around the world who explain in detail how these new techniques can be applied and what their impact is on patient care. Included among the authors are both radiologists and oto laryngologists. The volume will serve as a practical, easy reference guide to physicians when unusual problems are encountered in this somewhat unfamiliar area of patient of particular value to the radiologist who deals with these care. The volume should be new modalities on a day-to-day basis.
Many books on general astronomy have been published in recent years, but this one is exceptional in several respects. It not only provides the complete newcomer to astronomy with a broad picture, covering all aspects - historical, observational, space research methods, cosmology - but it also presents enough more advanced material to enable the really interested student to take matters further. Astronomy is essentially a mathematical science, but there are many people who are anxious to take more than a passing interest and yet are not equipped to deal with mathematical formulae. In this book, therefore, the mathematical sections are deliberately separated out, so that they can be passed over without destroying the general picture. The result is that the book will be equally useful to beginners, to more advanced readers, and to those who really want to go deeply into the subject - for instance at university level. The whole text is written with admirable clarity, and there are excellent illustrations, together with extensive appendices which give lists of objects of various types together with more detailed mathematical explanations. All in all, the book may be said to bridge the gap between purely popular works and more advanced treatises; as such it deserves a very wide circulation, and it will undoubtedly run to many future editions.

Radiology of the Female Pelvic Organs represents the third text in Erich K. Lang's trilogy which includes the previously published titles Radiology of the Upper Urinary Tract and Radiology of the Lower Urinary Tract. This volume provides a comprehensive review of diseases of the female pelvic organs. Dal'; Knorpelgewebe entsteht iiberall im Korper, wo es notig ist, auch in tie- fereIl Teilen, wie z. B. um die Chorda, um das Gehirn und das Riickenmark. Es ist ein typisches Innenskelet. Bei der Mehrzahl der Fische (Teleostomi, Ostracodermi, Dipnoi) tritt neben dem Knorpel auch ein kniichernes Skelet auf. Dieses konnen wir mit Sicherheit von dem Schuppenkleid dieser Tiere ableiten, d. h. von ihrem Hautskelet (s. S. 47). \us den Schuppen entstehen an bestimmten Stellen groBe Knochenplatten als Hautverknocherungen; und zwar an Stellen, wo eine starke Panzerung zum Schutze des Korpers von V orteil ist. Das Knochenskelet liegt dann auch urspriinglich ober- flachlich, dicht unter der Oberhaut. Die nach auBen gekehrte Seite dieser ober- flachlich gelegenen Knochenplatten ist meist stark und unregelmaBig mit Rinnen versehen, wie wir das auch bei den Schuppen gesehen haben; in diesen Rillen liegen die BlutgefaBe, welche den Knochen von der AuBenseite her ernahren und zwischen Epidermis und Knochen keinen anderen Raum finden. Sobald eine dickere Bindegewebelage den Knochen von der Epidermis scheidet, verschwindet diese eigenartige mit Rillen versehene Oberflachenskulptur: die AuBenflache des Knochens wird glatt, wie das auch an der Innenflache der Fall ist. - Eine dichtereBindegewebelage umgibt die Knochen; sie wird die Knochenhaut oder das Periost genannt.

As befits a volume in the Advanced Series in Agricultural Sciences, this book was written with problems of practical agriculture in mind. One of the ways of controlling plant disease is by using resistant cultivars; and from the wide literature of genetics and biochemistry in plant pathology I have emphasized what seems to bear most closely on breeding for disease resistance. This has a double advantage, for it happens all to the good that this emphasis is also an emphasis on primary causes of disease, as distinct from subsequent processes of symptom expression and other secondary effects. The chapters are entirely modern in outlook. The great revolution in biology this century had its high moments in the elucidation of the DNA double helix in 1953 and the deciphering of the genetic code in 1961. This book, so far as I know, is the first in plant pathology to be conceived within the framework of this new biology. Half the book could not have been written 20 years ago, even if there had then been available all the literature that has since accumulated on the genetics and chemistry of plant disease. The new biology is the cement this book uses to bind the literature together. Another feature of this book is an emphasis on thermodynamics.
