At the end of World War I, the United States joined an "Allied Intervention" based at Archangel, Russia, ultimately sending over 6,000 American troops to serve under overall British command. Assigned a mission to protect storehouses of munitions and supplies from German forces, the Americans of the 339th Infantry Regiment and its support units were instead thrown into combat in the middle of a Russian civil war - the only American troops ever to fight Russian troops on Russian soil. Though the 339th was a Michigan-based regiment, by circumstance over 220 Kentuckians, representing 106 of the state's 120 counties, were assigned to this force. For the first time, their particular story is presented, using their diaries, letters, articles from their hometown newspapers, and resources that were previously unavailable for nearly a century. Seventeen of the Kentuckians lost their lives as a result of this posting, and many more were injured, several being permanently disabled. Many were decorated for valor in action, including one "Distinguished Service Cross" and one "Silver Star" - the latter being presented to the soldier's descendants over a century after the fact.

Fail Better is a catalogue of selected artworks by British-born artist James R Ford, with accompanying texts, interviews and essays, from 2008-2013. "Forever playfully exploring the intimate relationships between physical media and everyday life: Ford's investigations into, and reflections on, existential nature and the use of conventional materials and modes of presentation reveal countless nuanced contradictions as well as a fascination with process and the filling-in of time. While mostly a creator of laboured drawings, well considered objects and videos, Ford also provides us with scenarios that have us pondering over the mundane and/or acting out the absurd as he invites us to look deeper into his works and at what is taking place around us." Does your Family Make You Smarter?

Does your Family Make You Smarter?

James R. Flynn

Does your family make you smarter? James R. Flynn presents an exciting new method for estimating the effects of family on a range of cognitive abilities. Rather than using twin and adoption studies, he analyses IQ tables that have been hidden in manuals over the last 65 years, and shows that family environment can confer a significant advantage or disadvantage to your level of intelligence. Wading into the nature vs. nurture debate, Flynn banishes the pessimistic notion that by the age of seventeen, people's cognitive abilities are solely determined by their genes. He argues that intelligence is also influenced by human autonomy - genetics and family notwithstanding, we all have the capacity to choose to enhance our cognitive performance. He concludes by reconciling this new understanding of individual differences with his earlier research on intergenerational trends (the 'Flynn effect') culminating in a general theory of intelligence.
Planning for the Success of Students with IEPs
The difficulties that students with individual education plans (IEPs) encounter in general education classrooms are rarely impossible to overcome. What is required to help them succeed is figuring out the individualised supports they need, whether that involves accessing technology, receiving assistance from a peer or adult, or curricular and assignment adaptations. In this comprehensive handbook, James R. Thompson synthesises the work of a team of experts to provide a roadmap for that problem-solving process. The Systematic Supports Planning Process is structured around three central questions that lead to identifying different types of support: "What to teach?"—curricular adaptations"How to teach?"—instructional supports"How to promote participation?—participation supports Packed with easy-to-follow guidelines, as well as implementation tools and examples, this book is a one-stop reference for planning, delivering, monitoring and evaluating the supports that students with IEPs require.

Jack Ross, after serving his country in top-secret black ops missions during his early military years, realized the recently-discovered jumperdrive, a device that allows interstellar transportation, had immense possibilities - and not all of them good. The jumperdrive introduced the people of Earth to planets populated with intelligent aliens that resembled animal life-forms from Earth. One of the species, the H'kaah, agreed to a business proposition that allowed select members to live on Earth under the supervision and guidance of human hosts, their "Patrons". This experimental business deal led to an incredible adventure for Ross, the first Patron, and S'leen, his companion, as the two very different species learned to coexist ...and to love. This riveting tale of futuristic possibilities shows that whoever you are or what you've done, your fate isn't necessarily carved in stone, and could possibly be your Redeeming Factor.

Thomas Barnes, fresh out of interstellar cold-sleep, walked out of the alien starship a new man. An entirely new man. He'd had fifty years wiped off his calendar simply for agreeing to be a guinea pig for the aliens' frightfully expensive rejuvenation project, a business that they hoped would make trade between their worlds and Earth worthwhile. But there was a slight problem: The elderly lead scientist for the project was supposed to be on the ship, and was to live with him for three months to make sure nothing went wrong. But in her place was a young intern, terribly sick---and stinking to high heaven. Soon they would find themselves fighting for their lives against an unknown enemy that seemed determined to see the project fail. And the harder they fought, the worse things got!
