A New History of Social Work

A New History of Social Work

John H. Pierson

This book provides an overview of the main developments in social work over its 200-year history. From its beginnings in the early 19th century through to the present day, it recounts the efforts to create a fairer, socially just society through its work with individuals and families. Throughout, by focusing on individual cases as well as major ideas behind practice, this book invites the reader to step into the practitioner’s world as it unfolded. Providing a fresh, critical history of social work in Britain, the book covers the practical assistance for families and individuals in poverty in the 19th century; women’s social work with destitute mothers and children; social work’s response to war time needs; the development of specific domains of social work such as hospital social work, psychiatric social workers, moral welfare and children in care; tackling racism; and social work in a market society. The reader encounters the society that social workers and their users wrote about, thought about and sought to create. Covering critical points of dispute along with overarching visions that would take the profession – and society – forward, the book explores the ideologies, moral constructs and social forces that shaped everyday social work. A New History of Social Work will be of interest to all scholars and students of social work and will be particularly relevant for modules on introductions to social work and the foundations of social work.

At a time when organized heritage protection in Asia is developing at a rapid pace, Architectural Conservation in Asia provides the first comprehensive overview of architectural conservation practice from Afghanistan to the Philippines. The country-by-country analysis adopted by the book draws out local insights, experiences, best practice and solutions for effective cultural heritage management that will inform study and practice both in Asia and beyond.Whereas architectural conservation in much of the Western world has been extensively documented, this book brings together coverage of many regions where architectural conservation has been understudied. Following on from the highly influential companion volumes on global architectural conservation and architectural conservation in Europe and the Americas, with this book the authors extend their pioneering global examination to the dynamic and evolving field of architectural conservation in Asia.Throughout the book, the authors and regional experts provide local case studies and profile topics that bring depth and insight to this ambitious study. As architectural conservation becomes increasingly global in practice, this book will be of considerable assistance to architectural conservation practitioners, site managers and students of architecture, planning, archaeology and heritage studies worldwide.

A concise treatment of the fundamentals of thermodynamics is presented in this book. In particular, emphasis is placed on discussions of the second law, a unique feature of thermodynamics, which states the limitations of converting thermal energy into mechanical energy. The entropy function that permits the loss in the potential of a real thermodynamic process to be assessed, the maximum possible work in a process, and irreversibility and equilibrium are deduced from the law through physical and intuitive considerations. They are applicable in mitigating waste heat and are useful for solving energy, power, propulsion and climate-related issues. The treatment is not restricted to properties and functions of ideal gases. The ideal gas assumption is invoked as a limiting case. Reversible paths between equilibrium states are obtained using reversible heat engines and reversible heat pumps between environment and systems to determine the entropy changes and the maximum work. The conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium comprising mechanical, thermal, chemical and phase equilibrium are addressed and the species formed at equilibrium in a chemical reaction at a given temperature and pressure are obtained. The molecular basis for the laws of thermodynamics, temperature, internal energy changes, entropy, reversibility and equilibrium are briefly discussed. The book serves as a reference for undergraduate and graduate students alongside thermodynamics textbooks.

Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion

Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion

In highly unequal Britain, poverty and social exclusion continue to dominate the lives of users of social work and social care services. At the same time, years of austerity combined with welfare reform have changed the context in which services are delivered in a society roiled by Brexit, Covid, Black Lives Matter and women rallying under the banner, “Me-too”.This fourth edition lays out the ways and means for practitioners to tackle the deprivation and destitution of service users. Fully revised and expanded, it introduces new material that tracks changes and developments in policy and practice. Statutes, benefit rules and relevant research are discussed as part of the necessary knowledge base for practitioners. Greater attention than in previous editions is paid to: local authority commissioning, the impact of social media on the mental health of young people, substandard housing and working with transgender youth.Preparing practitioners to engage directly with the social and personal circumstances facing excluded individuals and their families, this book explains the development of the concept of social exclusion as a framework for understanding the impact of poverty and other deprivations in users’ lives, and locates that framework within social work values of social justice while acknowledging the many challenges to those values. The focus is on practice throughout with boxed extracts from key policies and guidelines along with questions for readers to ponder through up-to-date examples, activities and exercises in each chapter. Case studies from public, private and voluntary sectors are drawn from across the United Kingdom, to illuminate the way forward for poverty-aware social work.Tackling Poverty and Social Exclusion will be required reading for all BA and MA social work degrees across the United Kingdom.

Shakespeare’s Politic Histories

Shakespeare’s Politic Histories

This book posits that Shakespeare’s First Tetralogy draws inspiration from the Italian “politic histories” of the early modern period. These works of history, influenced by the Roman historian Tacitus, delve into the exploration of the machinations of power politics in governance and the shaping of historical events. The argument is that closely analysing these Italian “politic histories” can significantly enhance our understanding of the “politic” aspects dramatized in Shakespeare’s early English History plays. Specifically, the writings of Niccolo Machiavelli are highlighted as contributing to this understanding. These “politic histories” were accessible (in a variety of forms) to many English early modern writers, including Shakespeare. Thus, they serve as foundation for political and strategic analogies, enriching our interpretation of Shakespeare’s politic histories. While delving into the Italian “politic” historians can illuminate Shakespeare’s achievement, it is suggested that we should regard the English History plays as “politic histories” in their own right. In essence, they are dramatized versions of precisely the same kinds of “politic” historical writing, with its emphasis on ragion di Stato or raison d’état. This emphasis on what the Elizabethans called “stratagems” introduces new approaches to interpreting the plays. Considering the motivation and action of its characters entails novel approaches that challenge the established reading of the plays’ ‘Machiavellian’ characters (particularly Richard III) and shed light on previously overlooked characters (particularly Buckingham and Stanley), revealing their considerably greater strategic acumen. This exploration provides fresh avenues for reading the Shakespeare’s politic histories and better appreciate their Italian connection.

This book offers a journey through the problems and the progress of the discipline of sociology in the UK and Europe throughout the second half of the twentieth century via an exploration of seven social settings from the life of a now eminent sociologist. It conceptualises the complex relation that exists between being and knowing, and between the personal knowledge that comes from lived experience and the essentially impersonal knowledge that any science seeks to pursue. The seven – very contrasting – settings are described in detail, together with reference to some of their leading personalities, such as David Glass, Karl Popper, Norbert Elias, Sebastian Sprott, Richard Hoggart, Noel Annan, E. M. Forster, Gösta Rehn, Chelly Halsey, Fred Hirsch and Jürgen Habermas. In each case, the author shows how his lived experience within these settings formed a substratum of his sociology and how he navigated the line between personal knowledge as a creative resource and personal knowledge as potential bias using methodological discipline. It will ultimately appeal to those with interests in sociology, philosophy of science, sociological histories, and biographical methods.

Space, Time, and Deity Redux: Proposing New Notions About Space, Time, and Deity for the 21st Century
Ask someone "What time is it?" and the response will be without hesitation. However, ask "What is time?" and you will get a quite different response. The answer to this question (and others) is presented three parts; Part 1: Space and Time, Part 2: Perception and Reality, and Part 3: Consciousness and Deity. Each of the six words in these titles all have common everyday conversational meanings, and all six have less familiar, deeper meanings. Questions such as what is space and why does consciousness exist, and new notions about deity are presented for the non-specialist in an informal and understandable manner. Is life merely the emergence of certain properties due to an appropriate aggregation of organic molecules or is the basis of life found at all levels and in all world-stuff? What concrete knowledge do we have of the intrinsic properties and capabilities of matter at the most basic levels? For example, in Part 1, space and time are considered, and then reconsidered to show that our notions about space and time are possibly wrong and that new ways of thinking about time are possible, desirable, and even necessary. In a similar manner, the author takes on the topics of perception, reality, consciousness, and deity such that each are considered and reconsidered in a manner that offers new and novel insight into each. The author claims that religious sentiment has many emotions, but perhaps the most important one is the feeling of a striving toward something greater than ourselves with which we seek harmony and concordance such that it is a spiritual appetite and a natural result of our inherent tendency to seek within the hierarchy of ministrations that which is greater and higher than ourselves. Additionally, the author states that current knowledge of the vastness of the universe and the unexpected strangeness of the micro-world require that we rethink some of our most strongly held beliefs. We need to remember that many of our beliefs originated thousands of years ago, in the setting of a small universe, and where earth was the center of that universe. Although modern cosmology has many questionable notions, enough of it is established to the point where rethinking our place in the universe is both desirable and necessary. As this work progresses, it becomes increasingly conceptual and speculative. In this way, the author opens new doors into our world, which provides enrichment and a greater appreciation for the complexity and wonder of our world. It is safe to say, that some things that now seem complex will be simplified and some things that seem simple will become more complex. In this way, the author opens new doors into our world, which provides enrichment and a greater appreciation for the complexity and wonder of our world. As the author states in the preface, "Portions of this book may be common knowledge to some, new and novel to some, and, possibly, completely absurd to some. I hope that not too many will have the latter experience. Of course, the same reader could have all three experiences."

Today colorful barn quilts, also called quilt blocks, can be found along many highways and rural back roads and even in towns and cities through out America and Canada. The interest in this fast growing grass roots art movement started not many years ago in Ohio and then continued to grow daily as communities, social clubs see what barn quilts can do to promote tourism and the local history/heritage. Brilliant barn quilt patterns are displayed on barns, corn cribs and other farm out buildings through farm country and even in towns and cities. This book is an opportunity for you to create many original color patterns for the featured quilt blocks.Barn Quilt Projects are usually supported and organized to educate, promote and celebrate the unique agricultural heritage of an area through the visual combination of barns and quilt patterns. Farms are vital to the economic well-being of many rural communities. Handmade barn quilt blocks provide warmth, beauty and an outlet for individual/group artistic expression. Plus, promoting tourism is an important part of all or most barn quilt projects. A barn quilt is made by by painting a quilt block design on MDO plywood, called signboard suitable for all forms of outdoor weather. Prior to painting the barn quilt pattern two or three coats of primer are applied to front, back and edges of the signboard, Next, a barn quilt pattern is drawn on the primed wood. The drawing creates numerous sections of the pattern. Frog tape, painter's tape, is applied to outline all sections of the pattern. Two or three coats of each selected paint is applied and allowed to dry over night. After the quilt is completely painted it is allowed to cure for about a week before bringing mounted.Barn quilt blocks located in Green County are found in different sizes...8 by 8, 4 by 4, 3 by 3 and even 2 by 2. Finished barn blocks are mounted on barns and other farm buildings with other smaller ones mounted and displayed in yards and parks. The Green County Project promotes the concept all around the area. Each quilt block is usually painted by volunteers, clubs and/or family members and when finished a farmer or property owner donates space for mounting and display. Making the barn quilt block allows volunteer groups from churches, schools, 4H, FFA, community service groups and even families the opportunity to create and paint a quilt block, The chosen quilt block may represent a family pattern from a family quilt.
