Leading the Way Through Joshua

Leading the Way Through Joshua

Youssef Michael

Harvest House Publishers,U.S.

nidottu
The book of "Joshua" contains some of the most compelling and relevant truths for our lives today. It is the story of "trembling heroes" - people filled with fear who overcame those fears and accomplished the impossible through reliance on God. In "Leading the Way through Joshua", Michael Youssef translates the challenges Joshua and the nation of Israel faced into challenges that are familiar to everyone. God calls people to follow Him, to conquer the Jerichos in their lives, to stand against the idolatry in our land. God calls Christians to tell the world about His covenant love, expressed through the life, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. Readers of this devotional commentary will discover how to turn the insights of Joshua into action in their own lives. It will motivate them to step up, to be strong and courageous, to obey God, and to go wherever God sends them.

Mindy Thompson Fullilove offers a series of meditations on her remarkable family and the places where they have lived. She lovingly recalls her parents: her father, a black leader of the labor movement, and her mother, a white woman whose boundless generosity was always in conflict with the racial divisions of the world around her. "Place" is a major actor in her family story, and in the course of bringing the backgrounds of six generations into the foreground, Fullilove uncovers the many lives—her own included—that are rooted in those places.

Homilies on Joshua

Homilies on Joshua

THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF AMERICA PRESS

With this publication, English readers now have available to them the complete homilies of Origen of Alexandria on the book of Joshua. These homilies were among the last Origen gave before his torture and death during the Decian persecution, around 254.With the saga of the Israelites entering and possessing their promised land, Origen unfolds the story of the Christian life from baptism to resurrection. He exhorts his hearers to persevere in their own struggles to overcome the enemies of their souls and obtain their own inheritance. Their leader is Jesus, the Son of God, who is prefigured in Jesus (Joshua), the son of Nun. All battles, victories, and defeats happen within the individual; all aspects of the Law and temple become but shadows of the fulfilling work of God in Jesus Christ. The story brims with allegory and passion, a passion for the people and for their priests who, ""standing near the blazing fire of the altar,"" must illuminate the path for others. As Origen exhorted, others wrote down his words, words he had asked the people to pray for and the Spirit to supply. Most of the original writings in Greek were lost during the centuries when Origen was officially defamed. What we have today is the Latin translation by Rufinus, the basis of the translation in this volume. In the Introduction, Barbara J. Bruce discusses and affirms the reliability of the Latin text, and briefly looks at Origen's ministry, his concept of the nature of Scripture, and his method of interpretation. Those who recognize the value of praying the Scripture through lectio divina, those who want to understand more about early Christianity, and those who seek to borrow fire from an elder brother will find flashes of insight in this new volume.
The Rescue of Joshua Glover

The Rescue of Joshua Glover

H. Robert Baker

Ohio University Press
2008

On March 11, 1854, the people of Wisconsin prevented agents of the federal government from carrying away the fugitive slave, Joshua Glover. Assembling in mass outside the Milwaukee courthouse, they demanded that the federal officers respect his civil liberties as they would those of any other citizen of the state. When the officers refused, the crowd took matters into its own hands and rescued Joshua Glover. The federal government brought his rescuers to trial, but the Wisconsin Supreme Court intervened and took the bold step of ruling the Fugitive Slave Act unconstitutional. The Rescue of Joshua Glover delves into the courtroom trials, political battles, and cultural equivocation precipitated by Joshua Glover's brief, but enormously important, appearance in Wisconsin on the eve of the Civil War. H. Robert Baker articulates the many ways in which this case evoked powerful emotions in antebellum America, just as the stage adaptation of Uncle Tom's Cabin was touring the country and stirring antislavery sentiments. Terribly conflicted about race, Americans struggled mightily with a revolutionary heritage that sanctified liberty but also brooked compromise with slavery. Nevertheless, as The Rescue of Joshua Glover demonstrates, they maintained the principle that the people themselves were the last defenders of constitutional liberty, even as Glover's rescue raised troubling questions about citizenship and the place of free blacks in America.

The Story Of Joshua Higgins is the story of a young man who seeks to build a life for himself in a new land. Although it is told as the story of one man and what he encountered over the years in the land that became known as the Dakota Territory, and later South Dakota, it is really a collection of stories of many men and their conflicts with nature and the other dangers they faced on the Frontier. Each chapter is almost a story in and of itself of the conflicts those men faced in their quest for a future in the Frontier. Although this story is fiction, it shows what it took for those men of adventure to make their way in the wilderness. In the early days, most of these men were frontiersmen, some of them eventually became ranchers and farmers who settled down and made homes for their families. It is also the story of some of the things that helped shape the men of the Frontier and helped our country grow into the great country it is today.
The Fashionable Adventures of Joshua Craig (Esprios Classics)
David Graham Phillips (1867-1911), was an American journalist and novelist. After completing his education, Phillips worked as a newspaper reporter in Cincinnati, Ohio before moving on to New York City where he was employed as a columnist and editor with the New York World until 1902. In his spare time, he wrote a novel, The Great God Success that was published in 1901. The book sold well enough that his royalty income allowed him to work as a freelance journalist while dedicating himself to writing fiction. Considered a progressive, Phillips' novels often commented on social issues of the day and frequently chronicled events based on his real-life journalistic experiences. Phillips' reputation as a muckraker cost him his life when, in January 1911, he was shot and killed in New York City.
