L’Empire ottoman du XVIe au XVIIIe siècle
United by a common interest in the institutions, the social life and the commercial activities of the Ottoman empire in its heyday, these studies fall into three sections. The first concentrates upon Istanbul, the heart of the empire; the second covers the dealings between the Ottomans and foreign traders, amongst whom the Venetians held a prime position. Robert Mantran then turns to the Arabic provinces of the empire, examining their relations with the central government. In particular, he looks at Northern Africa, the history of which in the Ottoman period remains too little studied, and yet for which - as for other aspects of Ottoman history - there still exists a wealth of unexplored documentary information.

L'Ibérie Chrétienne et le Maghreb (XIIe - XVe siècles)

sidottu
The late Ch.-E. Dufourcq was one of the first to map out the relations between the Christian and Muslim coastlands of the medieval western Mediterranean. These studies reveal the extent of the contribution he made to the subject, and the care and attention with which he handled the scattered documentary sources. There are three main themes to the volume: one group of articles focuses on the political and diplomatic aspects of the relations between Spain (Catalonia in particular) and the Maghreb (the lands of the modern Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia); a second is concerned more with commercial contacts and with a comparison of the economic conditions north and south of the Mediterranean, and with the day-to-day life of the sailors and merchants who formed the link between the two. A third theme, most prominent in the final articles, is the social and economic history of Catalonia itself, a subject to which he returned in the final years of his life.
The context of this second volume by Professor Duval is the trinitarian controversies of the later 4th century. His work presents a detailed analysis of the 'reconquest' of Northan Italy and Illyricum from the homeist dogmas put in place by Constans II and affirmed by the Council of Rimini in 359-60. Milan occupies a central place, first as a bastion of Arianism, then as the see of Ambrose, who eventually oversaw the victory of orthodoxy; as these studies show, the process was not straightforward, and even after the Council of Aquileia in 381, remained imperilled by the turbulent politics of the Empire. The final item, hitherto unpublished, gives a critical account of some recent work on Ambrose.
L’Hagiographie et l’Iconoclasme Byzantin
The period of Byzantine Iconoclasm remains in many ways a 'Dark Age'. With this volume Marie-France Auzépy continues her fundamental re-examination of one of the key sources for the time, the Life of Stephen the Younger. Previously in this series she has published a new edition, translation and commentary on the text; the present work aims to establish a solid methodology for reading a hagiographical text as a historical source, and includes a systematic literary analysis to illuminate how the author treated his subject matter. Amongst other conclusions, this study shows how the historical presentation of the period was consciously shaped by the patriarchate of Constantinople in the years 787-815, in order to affirm the independence of the Church from imperial power.
