The first monograph on Lewis' sculptural practice inspired by the material inventiveness of Afro-Atlantic diasporic traditions This is the first monograph dedicated to the sculptural practice of the Canadian artist Tau Lewis (born 1993). Lewis transforms found materials into intricate soft sculptures, quilts, masks and other assemblages through intensive processes such as hand sewing and carving. A self-taught artist, Lewis’ practice is directed at healing personal, collective and historical traumas through the repetitive forms of creative labor she employs. She forages for materials charged with meaning—old clothing and photographs, as well as driftwood and seashells—which she often collects from her surroundings in Toronto, New York or outside her family’s home in Negril, Jamaica. Lewis’ upcycling relates to forms of material inventiveness practiced by diasporic communities, wherein working with objects close at hand is a reparative act to reclaim agency. Throughout, Lewis’ interest lies in honoring and advancing these diasporic traditions and exploring, as she has said, “the transference of energy and emotion that occurs when an object is made by hand.”

Tau Lewis’s mythical sculptures create elaborate portals into fantastic worlds “At 52 Walker, artist Tau Lewis transmutes the lifeblood of scrap objects into something sanctified. . . . I’m reminded that an art gallery can also be a temple.” — New York magazine Following her acclaimed presentation Divine Giants Tribunal at the 2022 Venice Biennale, Lewis has continued to create anthropomorphic forms inspired by those in Yoruban mask dramas—ones which are spiritually activated by the wearer and the audience and, by extension, their community. Conversing with spiritual and ancestral pasts, Lewis’s works reinvent and reconsider narratives of Greek myths, theater, and death. In this body of work, the artist reexamines apocalyptic themes as an opportunity for reconstruction and transformation. Documenting and expanding on Lewis’s exhibition at 52 Walker titled Vox Populi, Vox Dei, this catalogue contextualizes the artist’s investigations and expressions. Poetry by the multidisciplinary artist and activist Yves B. Golden complements Lewis’s otherworldly motifs. With a curator’s note by Ebony L. Haynes, this publication also features an essay by Tiana Reid that explores Lewis’s practice, drawing connections between sources that range from Joy James to Frederick Douglass.
The Life & Times of Eddie Lewis: One Man's Fight Against A Corporation
Eddie Lewis was a typical American worker trying to earn a living during the 1980s and 1990s. He worked hard and showed up on time, but eventually, years of hard labor and injuries started to slow him down. Despite the years of lifting equipment, walking, and moving around, this wasn't the main cause of his retirement. In fact, the opposite was true. America was in the middle of regulating how people were treated in the workplace, particularly ensuring the hiring practices of companies and managers were ethical and non-discriminatory. Follow along with this short, yet powerful story to see how Eddie Lewis was able to stand up for others, get fired for being the wrong color, and how he fought back for his rights and the rights of others. Dear reader, my name is Eddie Lewis. After the ordeal that I experienced, I decided to move to a more quieter environment in the South. I live on a small farm with a few head of cattle along with some goats and a few chickens. I love to hunt deer whenever the opportunity arises during the deer hunting season. I felt that writing this book was important to let the public know of some of the unscrupulous practices of people in positions of power.

It has been said that next to the biblical writers, the most quoted person in American pulpits, churches, and educational institutions, hands down, is C. S. Lewis. He has become such a part of the speaking and thinking rhythm of those of us in the West, that without him, well . . . who would we quote? Peter Kreeft sums it up quite nicely: "" Lewis] is read with enormous affection and loyalty by a wide and diversified audience today. . . . In fact, more of his books are sold today than those of any other Christian writer in history"" (Kreeft, Lewis and the Two Roads to God, The Washington Times, in The World & I, February 1987, 354). Why Lewis? is a primer, designed especially to stimulate thinking about Lewis and offer at least seven reasons why he has made such an indelible impact upon so many. Quotes, references, anecdotes, and footnotes are provided in easily accessible fashion to assist the budding Lewis scholar into elements of deeper study, while at the same time offering the most seasoned aficionado some fresh perspectives as well.

Child abuse has many definitions and can be physical, sexual or emotional. Facing the painful effects of child abuse helps victims recover and deal with everyday living. Teenage Bridget Lewis uses journaling as a way to recall, report and heal from her early memories of unwanted sexual advances.

From black cats to iconic snowscapes, Maud Lewis paints our waking dreams. One of Canada's most beloved folk artists, Maud Lewis was famous in her lifetime for her brightly coloured and endearing paintings of rural Nova Scotia. Working from her tiny, road-side house in Marshalltown, she produced hundreds of small works that captured aspects of rapidly changing country life. Until now, the story of her difficult life has dominated the discussion of her art: her triumph over her physical disabilities and poverty, the harsh treatment she received at the hands of her family, and her alliance by chance with her husband Everett Lewis, who enabled her successful painting career over many decades. This book, accompanied by an exhibition at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, will examine the aesthetic achievements of Maud Lewis's paintings — her serial repetition of images and motifs and the dizzying variety that she brought to the problems of picture making. From her black cats and kittens, to her cart horses and oxen hauling logs, to her quayside scenes of ships in port and the Maritime landscape in all seasons, Maud Lewis made paintings that still delight in their optimism and buoyant vitality.Featuring a comprehensive selection of paintings drawn from leading Maud Lewis collectors in Nova Scotia, Maud Lewis: Paintings for Sale offers a unique opportunity to experience the range and depth of her work.
Alun Lewis: Letter to my Wife
Soldier and poet Alun Lewis wrote frequently to his family, friends and other writers such as Robert Graves. Mostly these letters are uncollected. Those that have been published received high praise, and were compared to Keats's letters by critic Walter Allen. Letters to My Wife includes over 240 letters to his wife Gweno Ellis, beginning with his enlistment and continuing until his death in Burma in 1944. From them emerges a unique account of daily army life, of the phoney war in Britain and with descriptions of the journey to India via Brazil and South Africa. The letters also shed light on Lewis' development to become the writer of World War Two, with first hand references to his popular poems and stories, how they originated and how they were first published. Above all, Lewis's letters testify to his love for his war bride Gweno, whom he married in July 1941 before embarkation. Letters to My Wife is the story of Alun Lewis's war.
