Focusing on works by George Meredith, W. M. Thackeray, and Anthony Trollope, Alice Crossley examines the emergence of adolescence in the mid-Victorian period as a distinct form of experience. Adolescence, Crossley shows, appears as a discrete category of identity that draws on but is nonetheless distinguishable from other masculine types. Important more as a stage of psychological awareness and maturation than as a period of biological youth, Crossley argues that the plasticity of male adolescence provides Meredith, Thackeray, and Trollope with opportunities for self-reflection and social criticism while also working as a paradigm for narrative and imaginative inquiry about motivation, egotism, emotional and physical relationships, and the possibilities of self-creation. Adolescence emerges as a crucial stage of individual growth, adopted by these authors in order to reflect more fully on cultural and personal anxieties about manliness. Tokugawa Japan ranks with ancient Athens as a society that not only tolerated, but celebrated, male homosexual behavior. Few scholars have seriously studied the subject, and until now none have satisfactorily explained the origins of the tradition or elucidated how its conventions reflected class structure and gender roles. Gary P. Leupp fills the gap with a dynamic examination of the origins and nature of the tradition. Based on a wealth of literary and historical documentation, this study places Tokugawa homosexuality in a global context, exploring its implications for contemporary debates on the historical construction of sexual desire. Combing through popular fiction, law codes, religious works, medical treatises, biographical material, and artistic treatments, Leupp traces the origins of pre-Tokugawa homosexual traditions among monks and samurai, then describes the emergence of homosexual practices among commoners in Tokugawa cities. He argues that it was 'nurture' rather than 'nature' that accounted for such conspicuous male/male sexuality and that bisexuality was more prevalent than homosexuality. Although wartime sexual violence against men occurs more frequently than is commonly assumed, its dynamics are remarkably underexplored, and male survivors’ experiences remain particularly overlooked. This reality is poignant in northern Uganda, where sexual violence against men during the early stages of the conflict was geographically widespread, yet now accounts of those incidents are not just silenced and neglected locally but also widely absent from analyses of the war. Based on rare empirical data, this book seeks to remedy this marginalization and to illuminate the seldom-heard voices of male sexual violence survivors in northern Uganda, bringing to light their experiences of gendered harms, agency, and justice.

Accordingly, the first half of the book deals with the evolutionary aspects of male reproduction and sperm competition, sperm production and delivery in man and other animals, spermatogenesis and epididymal function, sperm transport in the female tract and the apparent decline in human sperm count. The second part of the book puts greater emphasis on clinical problems and opens with a discussion of intracytoplasmic sperm injection, its value and limitations. This is followed by a review of modern developments in the genetics of male fertility and proceeds to a further chapter on the role of surgical procedures used in the treatment. Semen analysis is critically reviewed and the molecular techniques now being used in preimplantation diagnosis and in the study of mitochondrial inheritance are fully described. Taken together these chapters, written by an international team of authors, illustrate the breadth of vision needed to tackle the problem of male fertility.

Rebecca Harrocks presents some of the earliest evidence of male circumcision from ancient Egypt, exploring the connotations and implications for the Jewish and Christian communities of Alexandria and Egypt. The relevance of male circumcision for Jewish females is evident in Hebrew scripture, especially in relation to marriage, procreation, and parenthood, but little attention has been paid to women in scholarship. Harrocks addresses this oversight by considering not only what male circumcision meant for men, but also what it meant for women and the female body.Drawing on a range of ancient literature, inscriptions, art, and human remains, the role of male circumcision in ancient Egypt is considered as a backdrop to its practice by the Israelites, who some in antiquity claimed adopted it from the Egyptians. Harrocks concludes with an exploration of the changes and consequences for Jewish customs suggested in early Christian texts – especially the Pauline writings – regarding the female body and a woman’s interaction with her community, and highlights nuances to New Perspective thought given this broader gender awareness.
