Moral Conversion and Video Games

Moral Conversion and Video Games

Moral Conversion and Video Games is an in-depth exploration of Spec Ops: The Line, a critically acclaimed video game that subverts its genre by confronting players with the psychological and moral consequences of war. Disguised as a standard third-person shooter, the game gradually reveals a dark, self-critical narrative in which the player’s choices, though seemingly free, lead to horrifying outcomes, most notably a white phosphorus attack on civilians. Praised for its story, aesthetic, and philosophical depth, the game has been interpreted as a critique of glorified violence, American exceptionalism, and the illusion of meaningful choice in video games. Its use of cognitive and ludo-narrative dissonance forces players to reflect on their own complicity in virtual violence. The game’s mirrored reference to Raphael’s Sistine Madonna, recast as a burned mother and child, deepens its ethical and even theological resonance. This insightful and in-depth study will interest researchers and students of video game studies, moral philosophy, and cultural theology.
Moral Education

Moral Education

In the early 1970s few subjects in schools had grown faster than moral education, and more and more teachers were seeking guidance in a changing and developing field where a training in the ‘traditional’ subjects could not always provide sufficient help. Originally published in 1975, Dr Kay maintained that a study of the sociological factors involved could give considerable insight into the meaning and purpose of moral education, and in this book he examines the effect on the individual pupil of the home, the school and differing socio-economic class structures and ideologies.Using standard sociological analyses Dr Kay discloses some of the determinants of individual morality as they affect children in their homes and schools. He concludes that the alleged moral superiority of the middle-classes merely stresses the fact that the benefits which are currently enjoyed by this minority should become the privilege of all. The analysis of home and school leads him to the view that a democratic milieu is the environment most likely to promote moral growth. And his study of school systems concludes with the view that privileged elitism should be replaced by an ‘aristocracy of service’, with full pupil-participation in every aspect of school life. Today it can be read in its historical context.

In face of historical injustices such as war, colonialism, slavery, and genocides, what responsibilities, if any, do the present generations owe – and to whom are such responsibilities owed? Drawing upon methods of political theory, empirical politics, legal philosophy, and applied ethics, this book advances the novel account of Collective Moral Debt Reparative Justice (CMDRJ).It aims to establish that descendants of victims inherit claims to reparation by which they can hold inheritors of perpetrators responsible for discharging. This argument applies particularly well to collectives meeting the threshold for group agency and complicit agents. Not only does the concept of “moral debt” serve as an emphatic metaphor for the distinctive ways by which perpetrators and victims, descendants and inheritors are connected – it also provides the compelling explanation hitherto missing as for why claims of reparative justice do not go away merely in virtue of the passage of time. The book should interest scholars and practitioners alike and has been written for those who are interested in what we owe others in relation to our past.
Moral Economies of Distribution and Redistribution in Africa
This book examines how moralities of distribution and redistribution operate and intertwine in everyday African economic life, enhancing current understandings of capitalism on the continent. Through rich ethnographic studies spanning eight countries—Ghana, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, and Zimbabwe—the volume reveals how these moral perspectives of right and wrong connect macro political economies with micro-level social norms and expectations. As debates about economic inequality intensify globally, this timely work illuminates how African actors navigate complex (re)distributional dynamics, duties, and pressures in contemporary capitalist contexts. The contributors provide nuanced analyses of socioeconomic inequalities that often remain obscured in scholarly and public discourse, making a significant contribution to the growing field of moral economy research in Africa and beyond. This book is essential reading for scholars of African studies, economic anthropology, political economy, development studies and anyone interested in understanding how moral frameworks shape economic relations, practices and outcomes across diverse African settings. The chapters in this book were originally published in Journal of Contemporary African Studies.
Moral Sentiments in Modern Society

Moral Sentiments in Modern Society

Since the time of Adam Smith, scholars have tried to understand the role moral sentiments play in modern life, an issue that became especially urgent during and after the 2008 global financial crisis. Previous explanations have ranged from the idea that modern society is built on moral values to the notion that modernisation results in moral decay. The essays in this interdisciplinary volume use the example of Dutch society and a wealth of empirical data to propose a novel theory about the ambivalent relation between contemporary life and human nature. In the process, the contributors argue for the need to reject simplistic explanations and reinvent civil society.
Moral Imagination and the Search for Meaning

Moral Imagination and the Search for Meaning

This book explores what it means to live an emotionally engaged and morally responsive life in a world increasingly governed by productivity, fragmentation, and emotional detachment. Drawing from a rich interdisciplinary background—including sociology, philosophy, moral psychology, feminist theory, and lived experience—the book offers a lyrical yet analytically rigorous meditation on empathy, recognition, and the fragile practice of democracy. Structured as a blend of essay, accessible theory, and poetic reflection, the book argues that empathy is not mere sentimentality, but a vital cornerstone of ethical action and collective life. It seeks to revive the moral imagination—our shared capacity to see, feel, and respond to the vulnerability of others—by grounding political and social thought in emotional and relational awareness. The book engages both classical and contemporary thinkers such as Arendt, Habermas, Weil, Honneth, Bauman, and Irigaray, while developing a distinct voice that bridges academic clarity with literary sensitivity. It proposes that love, care, and empathy must be reclaimed as active, public virtues—not confined to the private sphere, but central to justice, democratic participation, and meaningful life. At a time of polarisation, performance culture, and relational fatigue, Moral Imagination, and the Search for Meaning challenges us to reimagine what it means to be human—not through control or achievement, but through attention, recognition, and vulnerability. This volume speaks to academics and students in sociology, psychology, philosophy, and gender studies, while remaining accessible to therapists, educators, and general readers interested in emotional intelligence and ethics. It will particularly appeal to readers of bell hooks, Rebecca Solnit, and Martha Nussbaum who seek a lyrical voice that bridges academic theory with lived experience.
