Mary, Queen of Scotland and the Isles is the story of a woman born to rule a nation – and the glorious pageant of love and tragedy that followed in her wake. Mary's beauty inspired poetry – yet her birthright engendered hideous treachery and terrible, bloody murder. This novel is Margaret George's magnificent recreation of the life of one of history's greatest legends. A woman accused of murdering her husband to marry her lover. A woman who became Queen six days after her birth in 1542 – only to be beheaded forty years later on the orders of her cousin, Elizabeth I . . .

Victorian traveller Mary Kingsley has been portrayed as a victim of nineteenth-century attitudes towards women, a brave and daring explorer, an anti-imperialist agitator and even a feminist heroine. In this challenging and controversial new biography, Dea Birkett breaks through the shallow clichs which have defined this extraordinary female figure to frame a new image of the traveller as actively constructing her own history. For the first time, Mary Kingsley is seen as responding to and part of her time.

Mary Shelley's Early Novels seeks to redress the commonly held view that Mary Shelley was simply another mouthpiece for her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley. Her most challenging and ambitious novels; Frankenstein, Valperga, and The Last Man, are examined in the light of her intellectual relationship with Percy Shelley. We see the way in which these novels reflect her gradual rejection of his radical tenets in an assertion of her own intellectual and ideological independence.

Much of Mary Shelley's life reads like a compilation of some of the most lurid and sensationalist novels of her time. After the stormy years of her relationship with Percy Shelley, Mary went on to raise her one surviving son on her own, never sure of the loyalty of friends, threatened and intimidated by her dead husband's father. John Williams offers a thoughtful assessment of her literary achievement, set against the background of the evolution of the English novel in the politically volatile years of the early nineteenth century.

An extraordinary wealth of new work by established and young scholars on both sides of the Atlantic emerged during Mary Shelley's recent bicentenary year. Michael Eberle-Sinatra has made a representative selection, focusing on current issues and theoretical approaches, and treating Shelley's earlier fiction as inseparable from her neglected later fiction of the 1830s. With this collection, studies of this newly canonised Romantic period author enter a 'post-"Beyond- Frankenstein" ' era.
Mary Wollstonecraft and the Accent of the Feminine
Tauchert's book revisits the work of feminist icon Mary Wollstonecraft to offer new readings which are both astute and adventurous. It demands that we leave behind the baggage of years of argument over whether or not Wollstonecraft is feminist and instead offers a Wollstonecraft whose work intervenes in the formation of 'womanhood', and as such is both valuable and timely. Giving a comprehensive account of her work, Tauchert makes a significant addition to current theories of feminine writing through her analysis of Wollstonecraft's techniques.

This study argues that protestant society had traditionally sanctioned women's role in spreading literacy, but this became politicized in the 1790s. Wollstonecraft's literary vocation was shaped by the expectations of the power of print to educate and reform individuals and society, in the radical circles of the Unitarian publisher Joseph Johnson.

Mary Wollstonecraft's Social and Aesthetic Philosophy
Mary Wollstonecraft's Social and Aesthetic Philosophy examines attempts to revise representations of women to give them a more active role in public life. Combining history of ideas with close textual reading to position her in relation to other eighteenth century writers this book demonstrates how she is directly engaged in re-thinking key concepts in moral aesthetic and social philosophy, particularly where women are concerned. Bahar insists that Wollstonecraft's political claims cannot be separated from her desire to develop more convincing aesthetic representations of women.

Whether through suspicion or ignorance, serious consideration of what Mary can teach us has been lacking in large swathes of the church for some time. Drawing on careful biblical exegesis, church history and ecumenical thinking, this book suggests how a serious understanding of Mary might influence our ethical thought, and considers some of the key theological tensions at the heart of the church’s engagement with Mary.

Since she rose to international fame in 1985 with her seminal Irish jazz album Tired and Emotional, Mary Coughlan's battles with addiction, the problems in her personal life and career have been well documented. But until now she has never spoken of the traumatic events in her childhood that led to a life of rebellion, running away, and reliance on drugs and alcohol. In this funny, moving and typically outspoken memoir, Ireland's best-loved jazz singer pulls no punches in getting to the heart of what made Mary so contrary.Detailing her battles with the bottle, her suicide attempts and her confinement in psychiatric hospitals, Mary tells of how, after hitting rock-bottom, she pulled herself out of the dregs of a vodka bottle to confront the foundations of her problems head-on.As she tells her story - with a ribald, running commentary on the highs and lows of celebrity culture - we get to experience an alternative evolution of Ireland in the '70s and '80s, populated with hippies, rock stars and movie moguls, and one wild Irish girl determined to live a life less ordinary.

A pioneering woman missionary hailing from Aberdeen in Scotland, Mary Slessor's journey to Nigeria set an example to all Christian missions; she gained the trust, respect and thanks of the local peoples, and introduced the gospel of Christ. Most notably from a social viewpoint, Slessor managed to convince the Ibibio tribespeople of southern Nigeria to cease killing infants who were twins. The tribes of the region held a belief that one of two twins is an evil spirit; to be certain the spirit was vanquished, both babies would be left to die of exposure in the countryside. Appalled at this practice, Mary Slessor found, rescued and adopted many twins - seeing that the babies grew up to be healthy children, the tribes repented and ceased the abysmal practice. In the late 19th century and early 20th centuries, women's rights were inferior to those of men. Mary Slessor used her public profile to support the women's suffrage movement which argued for political enfranchisement.
