Family Life in the Seventeenth Century

Family Life in the Seventeenth Century

Miriam Slater

The great issues and conflicts of the early seventeenth century were played out not only on the stages of the Court and Parliament, and, latterly, on the battlefield, but within the confines of the family. Originally published in 1984, in this pioneering study of the Verney family, based on more than 10,000 family letters and papers, Professor Miriam Slater shows how a family of country gentry lived and behaved in a time of political and social crisis. Most of their energies were directed within the family, their concerns with marriage and children, with relationships between members of the Verney clan, with managing their estates and property. They emerge as real people with passions and hatreds, made to live their lives by correspondence when the head of the family was forced to live abroad as an exile and casualty of the political tumults. But their misfortunes have created a unique archive which allows the author to delve deep into the very heart of their personal lives, and to create an extraordinary collective portrait of a family in times of troubles.Professor Slater describes and analyses the way in which Verney family members actually treated each other, and gives an account of their ideas – on marriage, from both the male and female points of view; on the roles of children and parents; on the relationships among adult siblings; on the place of servants within the family. She offers a detailed and systematic examination of family psychological dynamics, and the values, attitudes and goals which affected individual behaviour. She also moves beyond individual idiosyncrasies by linking the nature of personal interaction within the family to the wider social structures of the society, including laws of inheritance, patriarchal control, the different treatment of men and women, and financial arrangements and family strategies.

Exploring Genres and Text Formats in Children’s Literature

This children’s literature textbook is based on the textual response framework which recognizes that, while readers’ personal experiences and knowledge shape their understanding of literature, readers’ knowledge of format and genre conventions is equally important in reading literature. Historically, children’s literature textbooks have focused largely on introducing readers to quality literature (and criteria for evaluating literature) and building readers’ knowledge of different genres of children’s literature. These are important goals that this textbook will also address. However, we recognize that textual knowledge includes more than genre knowledge; it also includes knowledge of what is distinctive about different formats of literature. In particular, this book helps preservice teachers understand the distinctive features of picturebooks, chapter books, novels in verse, and graphic novels, and what these distinctive features mean for engaging and supporting students as they read different formats. The book: ·introduces preservice teachers to quality literature, including the rich array of diverse literature that is being published for children ·provides preservice teachers with knowledge of major genres of children’s literature—fiction, nonfiction, and poetry ·provides preservice teachers with knowledge of different formats of children’s literature including picturebooks, chapter books, novels in verse, and graphic novels ·offers preservice teachers strategies for using textual knowledge (both genre and format) to support readers’ engagement with and understanding of literature.

This comprehensive study examines how UK publishers leverage pop culture across TikTok and Instagram, analysing over 1,000 posts from sixteen publishers during twelve months. The research demonstrates how pop culture functions as a powerful distribution mechanism within the attention economy, utilising gender dynamics, trending content, strategic timing, and music to connect authentically with target audiences. This evidence-based guide provides practical insights into how UK publishers effectively harness pop culture on two of the industry's most crucial marketing platforms. The analysis identifies four core elements, music, trends, timing, and gender, that publishers can strategically employ to communicate with audiences in their native digital language, thereby boosting engagement and expanding reach. Through detailed examination of visual content, audio elements, captions, comments, and hashtags, each chapter reveals current publisher strategies, highlights successful approaches, and identifies opportunities for improved performance metrics. The study encompasses the full spectrum of pop culture integration across multiple content dimensions. The final chapters address pop culture's measurable value and distil six actionable recommendations that publishers can immediately implement to enhance their social media marketing strategies on TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms. This practical framework enables publishers to optimise their pop culture integration for maximum audience resonance and engagement. Pop Culture Marketing in the Publishing Industry is Essential reading for publishing professionals, digital marketers, and social media strategists seeking data-driven approaches to audience engagement in the contemporary attention economy.

Originally published in 1966, Dr Hebron provides a comprehensive account in this book of the main theories of motivation and learning as applicable to each phase of the human life cycle at the time. She synthesises current theories by placing each within the context of the developmental phase for which it has the greatest significance; and she provides 350 supporting references. Each stage of human development is discussed separately, through infancy, early childhood, the transitional intuitive phase, middle childhood, and adolescence, to maturity and senility. Two chapters are devoted to adolescence, and there is interesting material on the gifted adolescent. The chapter on physiology describes with clarity the changes in physical structure and function which ensue as children enter into their cultural heritage, as adults become socially involved, and as the elderly undergo gradual disengagement. The book was addressed to the more advanced student preparing for the newly instituted degrees in education, to post-graduates in education, and to students in their third year of degree courses in psychology and sociology. Today it can be read in its historical context.
