Long dissatisfied with the highly romatical and often obscure translations in English of Rilke's great poem cycle, brother and sister Willam and Mary Crichton determined to work toward a translation that would be as straightforward and transparent, yet as lyrically beautiful as Rilke's German original. Working over the years, the Crichtons have produced a work in English worthy of Rilke's "Duino Elegies," written at Duino near Trieste beginning in 1912 and completed in Switzerland in 1922. Rilke considered this one of his greatest achievements. William Crichton lives in Toronto; Mary Crichton lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

As the digitization of every aspect of existence grows more pervasive and absolute, from the monitoring of thought to the tracking even of genitals, the central nervous system of the human body has been completely rewired. In the mapping of space-time, the species has moved into a state of total possession, of the enslavement of its drives, imagination, and will. Through this virtualization of life, the society of the spectacle has reached a point of unparalleled monstrosity, with the simulacrum usurping reality itself. The species is divided between the digitalists who see the technologization of the human as its natural evolutionary development, and those who stand against them.At this epochal crux, an enigmatic faction of anonymous figures engages in coordinated global poetic acts of destruction and creation, ludic and radical capers, dismantling machines of control and surveillance. The society of the spectacle is thereby short-circuited, scrambled, cut-up via skirmishes, d tournements, and other subversive acts of havoc wreaking, interruption, and sabotage. Can these dice throws overturn all the mediums of control and enslavement? As time grows more and more constricted, the serendipities and transfigurations of human life suffer swift evisceration. In the midst of this, the anonymous clowns of revolt seek to resurrect the moments and marvels when great forces open up the boundless and the limitless, creating combustion engines of play so as to generate new hemispheres of possibility.Written as a burst of epigrammatic sequences, like Molotov cocktails arriving from elsewhere, Dionysos Speed is a series of erupting geysers, comets flashing thru space and dispersing new forces. Akin to a Heraclitean fire machine, this book is an act meant to give birth once again to dissonant desire through the powers of the dice throw, a machine forged to release by way of its ludic freedom the vital forces of the cosmos.

Humanimality is a confrontation, a hybrid monster of a book that interrogates humanity's troubled relation with its animality, and so its relation to animals, the earth and, ultimately, the cosmos. In driving not only many species to extinction, but also endangering its very own existence, as well as imperiling the life of the planet, homo sapiens seem to be the most foolhardy species to have evolved since the dawn of time. Will the species drive itself to extinction, or will life itself, for evolution has not ceased, bring about the demise of that species through natural selection in order to preserve the planet? If other species have come and gone since the formation of life on earth, the persisting of homo sapiens is considerably dubious.Philosophy, religion, and science spiral through this book like chemicals to cross, charge, and finally detonate in an astonishing denouement.Humanimality is a bastard child, a book with nothing but the logic of physics to map the ecstasy of life.

The ten letters collected here are arguably the most famous and beloved letters of our century. Written when Rainer Maria Rilke was himself still a young man with most of his greatest work before him, they are addressed to a student who had sent Rilke some of his work, asking for advice about becoming a writer. The two never met, but over a period of several years Rilke wrote him these ten letters, which have been enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of readers.

"As for you, my dear Balthus, you surely know full well the love that connects us. Yours with all my heart, Rilke."Never before translated into English, Rainer Maria Rilke's fascinating Letters to a Young Painter, written between 1920 and 1926 toward the end of his life, is a surprising companion to his infamous Letters to a Young Poet, earlier correspondence from 1902 to 1908.While the latter has become a global phenomenon, with millions of copies sold in many different languages, the present volume has been largely overlooked. In these eight intimate letters written to a teenage Balthus--who would go on to become one of the leading artists of his generation--Rilke describes the challenges he faced, while opening the door for the young painter to take himself and his work seriously. Rilke's constant warmth, his ability to sense in advance his correspondent's difficulties and propose solutions to them, and his sensitivity as a person and an artist come across in these charming and honest letters. This volume paints a picture of the venerable poet as he faced his mortality and continued to embrace his openness towards other creative individuals. With an introduction by Rachel Corbett, author of You Must Change Your Life: The Story of Rainer Maria Rilke and Auguste Rodin, this book is a must-have for Rilke's admirers, young and old, and all aspiring artists.

Facsimile of 1943 Edition. Born in 1875, the great German lyric poet Rainer Maria Rilke published his first collection of poems in 1898 and went on to become renowned for his delicate depiction of the workings of the human heart. Drawn by some sympathetic note in his poems, young people often wrote to Rilke with their problems and hopes. From 1903 to 1908 Rilke wrote a series of remarkable responses to a young, would-be poet on poetry and on surviving as a sensitive observer in a harsh world. Those letters, ten in all, remain a fresh source of inspiration and insight to the poetic sensibility to this day.
Said It Aloud And Heard It Die Away: Rilke's Poems to Orpheus

This collection includes Rilke's 1907 poem "Orpheus, Eurydice, Hermes," which was nominated for the title "Greatest Poem of the 20th Century," and Rilke's 1922 Sonnets to Orpheus, in their totality. It also includes a brief selection from Rilke's Duino Elegies (1922). This original English translation by Frank Scalambrino (2020) concludes with a look into the coherency of Rilke's poems to Orpheus by way of a discussion of their philosophical and mythical influences.
The Rich in Public Opinion

The Rich in Public Opinion

What do people in the United States and Europe think about the rich? There are several thousand books and articles on stereotypes and prejudices directed at women, people of various races or nationalities, and even the poor. In contrast, there has only been sporadic research into stereotypes about the rich and no published comprehensive, scientific study on the topic--until now.Negative prejudices and stereotypes have repeatedly been used to justify the exclusion, expulsion, persecution, and murder of minorities who have been scapegoated at times of social crises. The 20th century is full of examples of wealthy people, including capitalists, kulaks, and other groups, who were victims of deadly persecution. These were exceptional situations but, even in moderate forms, prejudice against social groups harms society as a whole--not just the rich--through economic or physical destruction, and declining prosperity. In The Rich in Public Opinion: What We Think When We Think about Wealth, historian and sociologist Rainer Zitelmann examines attitudes about wealth and the wealthy in four industrialized Western countries: Germany, the United States, France, and Great Britain. Consisting of three parts, this book first surveys the literature about stereotypes and prejudices. Zitelmann then reports on never-before-seen data commissioned by the polling firm Ipsos MORI and from the Allensbach Institute, which conducted identical surveys of residents of four countries regarding various aspects of their attitudes toward wealth. Lastly, The Rich in Public Opinion looks at the portrayal of the rich in media and film.People often admire the wealthy, but Zitelmann shows that people can also envy them--a sometimes toxic envy that can put lives at risk. This book aims to examine how we think about a minority that, while undeniably powerful, can still be the subject of negative stereotypes, prejudice, and scapegoating-- often with dire effects for us all.

Rainer Maria Rilke's fifty-five Sonnets to Orpheus were written over a few days in an astonishing burst of inspiration. Described by Rilke himself as "a spontaneous inner dictation," the sequence is among the most famous works of modernist literature, and Christiane Marks's fresh new translations succeed in evoking Rilke's music--often sacrificed in translation--opening a new window on these poems, for old and new Rilke lovers alike. The result of nearly two decades of memorization, research, and fine-tuning, Marks's translations, only the second by a woman and the first by a native German speaker, recapture Rilke's astonishingly contemporary, often colloquial style.

For ten years, Rilke struggled to create the Duino Elegies: a cycle of ten unrhymed, free-form poems. By contrast, the fifty-five Orphic sonnets presented here were composed in just three weeks, in and as the wake of the final elegy. In this, the first sonnet-form translation to appear in print since 1960, the translator has sought to retain the musicality of the poems, to hew as closely as possible to the rigid and constricting rhythm and rhyme schemes through which Rilke proclaims the 'task of the poet': to listen to being in a most unique way, and to undertake the mystical work of inhabiting and praising the wonder of being as it saturates and transcends the here and now. The eternal questions of time, death, God and meaning are answered as they always must be: by an appeal to the ideals of beauty and love.

Art Beck's introduction notes that "translating poetry is writing poetry, only harder." But he also views it as an art akin to musical performance. Returning to these pieces by Rilke many times over the years, Beck came to realize that "it wasn't so much to perfect or polish the English renditions as to listen more closely to the 'original score.'" In addition to selections from The Book of Images and New Poems, this volume includes the complete Sonnets to Orpheus, which the translator contends are best experienced as a cycle akin to "a wandering piece of music with various crescendos, diminuendos, pauses, and arias." Those who appreciate Rilke's lyrical style and mystical underpinnings will find much to admire in these new translations. Those interested in approaches to poetry translation will benefit from the translator's accompanying commentary, discussing how Rilke's "broad range and multiple personalities" almost require multiple translators and voices.

On the centennial of the first appearance (1923) of Rilke's Sonnets to Orpheus, award-winning translator Mark Burrows reveals their depth and meaning with a brilliant new introduction and translation. This new translation captures the lyric beauty of Rilke's poems, honoring their syntactic peculiarities and grammatical complexities as few translators have dared to do. Burrows' versions maintain the essential strangeness of language and abruptness of metaphor by which the sonnets attain their distinctive character in German. Burrows' approach replicates what one reviewer describes as the poems' "dazzling obscurity," refusing to resolve the deliberate difficulties Rilke's formulations present. The effect invites readers to linger with these sonnets, allowing themselves to be shaped in their encounter with them.

Rainer Zitelmann's book explores how people with disabilities accomplish the extraordinary in life and set milestones that seem almost impossible even to most people without disabilities. Zitelmann profiles 20 unique individuals, all of whom have achieved far more than the average, often almost the superhuman, even though their disabilities supposedly endowed them with few opportunities and made them, in many respects, dependent on the people around them. The book reveals the secrets of success and the power of the mind for everyone. We learn what makes a person great: it is the ability to transform one's weaknesses into strengths and overcome supposed limitations. As Saliya Kahawatte, the blind man whose life story inspired the film My Blind Date with Life, writes in the foreword: "If you like, you can consider this book a treasure trove of human diamonds. We all know that every rare gem was once an ordinary piece of coal that withstood tremendous pressure over a long period of time, becoming ever harder and purer, and only achieving its unique brilliance through precise cutting and polishing. It's time to go diamond prospecting "The Author: Rainer Zitelmann is a historian, sociologist and multiple bestselling author, who published 26 books. His books have been translated into more than 30 languages around the world. In recent years, he has written articles and been the subject of interviews in leading media such as Wallstreet Journal, Forbes and Newsweek.
