Politics in Rutherford County were heated a century ago: the developing textile industry, the growing population, an agricultural crisis and race relations inflamed everyone. Mills Higgins Flack, a leader of the Farmers' Alliance and the county's first Populist in the state House, was allegedly murdered on August 28, 1900, by Avery Mills, an African American. This book documents the murder and the lynching of Avery Mills. The author (Flack's great-great-grandson) considers the phenomena of racial lynching, the Populist movement in the county, the white supremacy movement of the state's Democratic party and the county's KKK activities.

This is the story of Collett Leventhorpe (1815-1889), an Englishman and former captain in the 14th Regiment of Foot. Leventhorpe came to North Carolina about 1843, settled there, and later served the Confederacy as a colonel in the 34th and 11th N.C. and brigadier general commanding the Home Guard in eastern North Carolina. Though he trained as a physician at the College of Charleston in the late 1840s, he never practiced and was a restless man, endlessly in search of fortune--before the war in the gold fields of North Carolina and Georgia, and after it in the pursuit of lost estates, art treasures and inventions. But he excelled first and foremost as a Confederate soldier. As a field commander he was never defeated in battle, and his record was marred only by his own rejection of a much deserved but very late promotion to CSA brigadier. He lies buried in the beautiful Happy Valley section of Caldwell County.

Use this common coping mechanism to help people respond to crises! This thoughtful book offers a fresh theological interpretation for the ways people talk about God in times of crisis. A Theology of God-Talk: The Language of the Heart probes the meaning behind phrases like “It must have been God’s will” and “The Lord took Uncle Harry.” Though many caring professionals dismiss such talk as insensitive or irrational, these phrases offer powerful clues to the speaker’s personal religious feelings. A Theology of God-Talk demonstrates the ways that God-talk moves the sufferer through the grief and doubt of the crisis. By recognizing the ways God-talk resembles myth, apocalyptic tale, tragedy, story, and even prayer--all literary categories--the caregiver can begin to help sufferers rewrite their personal narratives in the wake of tragedy. A Theology of God-Talk examines the crucial issues of God-talk, including: common false assumptions about it the theology of God-talk interpretations and misinterpretations how to glean counseling insights from God-talk differing stances for sufferers and survivors of tragedyBringing together psychology, theology, and narrative theory, this insghtful and sensitive book offers new ways of looking at this common reaction to crisis. A Theology of God-Talk is an instant classic and an essential resource for pastors, chaplains, therapists, grief counselors, and theologians.

The Conscience of Abe's Turn: The Birth of the Conscience, Volume 1 (Season 1, Episodes 1-4)
A story of Espionage, Romance, and Abuse of Power in the fictional town of Abe's Turn: Somewhere in America, the people live in a police state. Ted and Clydene Jackson have felt it personally. So have their friends Mira and Michael, and all the victims they've tried to help, and all the volunteers lobbying to remove Police Chief Baedes from power. For Baedes's sole ambition is to "protect" the town of Abe's Turn, at all costs, even if he has to destroy a few innocents in the process. And he will knock down anyone who tries to get in his way. However, these four friends, unknown even to them, have the means, motive, and opportunity to restrain the forces around them, if they dare. and if their own feelings for each other don't stop them before they even begin. Politically incorrect, distinctly libertarian, and teeming with complex characters, this epic novelette series (with a planned 24-episode story arc) explores the heart of freedom and the dangers of power. It blurs the lines between state, revolution, and terrorism. It asks what Thomas Jefferson once asked: "What country can preserve its liberties, if its rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance?" (This first volume contains only Season 1, Episodes 1-4 of the series.)
Love Through the Eyes of an Idiot: A True Story of Finding the Secret of Love, Sex, and Romance
"I was born with the heart of a romantic. I fell in love at the drop of a hat, longed for someone to heal my loneliness, always attracted to the wrong women. Like others, I struggled for years with love and relationships. And like others, I thought I was all alone and that there was something wrong with me. "I finally did find a special someone, but finding that person was simpler than I had thought. "The storybooks have it all wrong. "This is my story, the frank confession of a romantic idiot who was lucky enough to find the secret of happily ever after." (J. Timothy King)

An innovative approach for parents of challenging boys to prevent meltdowns and put out fires Parenting is often called the toughest job you will ever love. If you have a challenging boy, one who won’t take no for an answer, argues every decision, and explodes at the slightest provocation, you know how incredibly tough parenting can be. But with the right tools, you can bring out the best in your child—and in you as a parent. In Challenging Boys: Keeping Your Cool in the Heat of Parenting, Timothy Davis draws on his experience as a child and family psychologist, father of three, and volunteer firefighter to help parents remain calm and in control even when it feels like the house is on fire during yet another meltdown. Like a firefighter, Davis teaches parents how to create a plan ahead of time to prepare for emergencies. He shows how to identify and manage specific triggers, recognize the patterns that challenging episodes follow, and plan for de-escalating a meltdown when it does occur. This plan is not a one-size-fits-all approach, because every boy is unique; instead, it is based on the child’s individual needs and each parent’s strength. While challenging boys can make life difficult for parents, teachers, siblings, and peers, Davis emphasizes that these children actually aren’t oppositional at all. They want to please, but often lack the skills to do so. Challenging Boys teaches parents how to help their boys develop these skills so that their natural gifts can shine.

A small village, rich in North Carolina history, Snow Camp has long been a crossroads and an outsider to the Old North State. Settled in 1749 by the oldest Quaker meeting still in the region, the community has been involved in the nation's history since its origin. The Regulators Movement formed over unfair taxation by the North Carolina colony and helped inspire more famous protests in Boston. Freedom's Hill Wesleyan Church arose in Snow Camp to resist the dominant pro-slavery culture of both the state and the Methodist Church in 1847. The Underground Railroad held faith in Snow Camp, having four stations in the small area alone. Join author and resident J. Timothy Allen as he chronicles Snow Camp's compelling past, present and future.
Evidences of Christianity

Evidences of Christianity

In this masterpiece of apologetics, McGarvey writes as a scholar who is thoroughly familiar with the most skeptical criticism of his day but at the same time completely persuaded that traditional views of the authorship, historical trustworthiness, and inspiration of Scripture are rationally defensible---a position more conservative than that held by most mainstream New Testament scholars today. But the change in the sociology of New Testament scholarship has been driven far more by philosophical fashion than by any change in the evidence itself. For just that reason, McGarvey's Evidences of Christianity affords a much-needed counterbalance for those whose study of apologetics has been filtered through the lens of modernism.

Tarheel Quakers and the Fight Against Slavery Quakers settled the Carolina Colony in the 1650s, bringing their slaves and servants with them. Industrious coastal Quakers soon rose to prominence on the backs of their enslaved men and women, and Piedmont Quaker lives were enriched by the people they enslaved as well. Sparked by the observations of John Woolman, Carolina Quakers took up the battle against slavery in the 1700s, beginning with themselves. Legal conflicts, the Free Negro program, colonization, the North Carolina Manumission Society and the Underground Railroad were the results. Combining North Carolina slave narratives, runaway slave ads, digital archives, local histories and internet blogs, Tim Allen re-creates the inspiring story of Tarheel Quakers who fought each other and the state to abolish enslavement in antebellum North Carolina.

This site-synthesis volume presents 20 years of work at the North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Research Site. It provides the definitive information base for the ecology of temperate lakes, and a general assessment of the role of lakes within their landscapes. The Wisconsin temperate lakes LTER site has had a major role in the growth of our modern limonological understanding, and this book also chronicles the history of this work. The book should be of interest to most American limonologists and a significant number of general ecologists.

Animals perform many athletic tasks to an amazing degree of accomplishment: not only spectacular feats of running and jumping but also routine actions that ensure survival such as feeding, vocalization, diving, flying, and many more. The study of performance capacity (defined as the ability of an animal to conduct a key task) is of great interest to both ecologists and evolutionary biologists. At an ecological level, how well individuals perform often dictates opportunities for reproduction, occupation of preferred territories, or capturing prey. Therefore, variation in performance capacities can be a key determinant of variation in fitness within animal populations. At an evolutionary level, variation in function often follows closely from variation in form, and therefore enables animals to invade novel habitats, or to overtake other species. This novel book examines how and why animal athletes have evolved. It uses examples from across the animal kingdom and integrates them in the broader context of ecology and evolution, thereby identifying common themes that transcend taxonomic divisions. Animal Athletes is an accessible textbook of particular relevance to undergraduates, graduate students, researchers, and professionals in the fields of evolutionary biology, ecology, vertebrate morphology, and functional, morphology, and will also appeal to the interested layperson.
