L'evoluzione dei materiali dentali sempre stata parallela ai progressi della scienza dei materiali. Storicamente, l'odontoiatria si affidata ai metalli, all'avorio, alle ceramiche e successivamente ai compositi, ma ognuno di questi materiali ha rivelato limiti di durata, adattabilit e biofunzionalit . Lo sviluppo di materiali intelligenti segna un cambiamento di paradigma nell'odontoiatria pediatrica. I materiali intelligenti sono quelli in grado di rispondere a stimoli ambientali quali pH, temperatura, stress meccanico o cambiamenti biochimici in modo prevedibile e vantaggioso. La loro integrazione ha trasformato l'odontoiatria clinica offrendo soluzioni minimamente invasive, biocompatibili e di lunga durata. L'odontoiatria pediatrica trae particolare vantaggio da questi materiali perch l'ambiente orale dei bambini dinamico, con una maggiore suscettibilit alla carie, una dentizione in via di sviluppo e considerazioni comportamentali. I materiali intelligenti riducono la necessit di sostituzioni frequenti, migliorano il comfort e promuovono approcci preventivi. Sostengono la filosofia dell'odontoiatria minimamente invasiva, incoraggiando la conservazione dei tessuti e rispondendo attivamente all'ambiente orale.

Miten ihmisen terveys, sairaus ja eliniän pituus riippuvat hänen yhteiskunnallisesta asemastaan? Miksi ihmiset eivät aina vaali terveyttään, vaikka pitävätkin sitä tärkeänä? Millaista on elää terveyttä ihannoivassa yhteiskunnassa sairauden tai mielen ongelman kanssa? Millaisia yhteiskunnallisia kytkentöjä liittyy sairauksien hoitamiseen? Terveys ja sairaus eivät ole ainoastaan biologisia ja lääketieteen keinoin ymmärrettäviä ilmiöitä, vaan niillä on sekä yhteiskunnallisia syitä että yhteiskunnallisia seurauksia. Näiden ymmärtämiseen tarvitaan muun muassa sellaisia käsitteitä kuin stressi, selviytyminen, toimijuus, tarina ja stigma. Nanostructures: Properties, Processing, and Applications is oriented around the Structure-Property-Processing-Applications and Performance lifecycle of materials development at the nanoscale. Through analogies and illustrations, the book explains the complex fundamentals in the areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology in an accessible way. The structures of metallic, polymeric, ceramic, hybrid, novel and natural nanomaterials are covered in depth to provide a broad-based understanding to the reader. The properties of materials are dependent on their structure; this is even more the case when nanostructures are examined. This book explains the major techniques for characterizing these properties. How has the participation of women in Hindu nationalist politics in India changed over time? More broadly, what has their changing participation meant for women, Hindu nationalism, and Indian democracy? In Marginalized, Mobilized, Incorporated, Rina Verma Williams places women's participation in religious politics in India into historical and comparative perspective through a focus on the most important Hindu nationalist political parties in modern Indian history: the All-India Hindu Mahasabha (HMS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She compares three critical periods to show the increasing involvement of women in Hindu nationalist politics over time. In its formative years in the early 1900s, the HMS marginalized women; in the 1980s, the BJP began to mobilize them; and in the contemporary period, as the BJP returned to power in 2014, it has incorporated women into its structures and activities. Williams contends that the incorporation of women into Hindu nationalist politics has significantly advanced the BJP's electoral success compared to prior periods when women were either marginalized or mobilized in more limited ways. For the BJP, women's incorporation works to normalize religious nationalism in Indian democracy; however, incorporation has not been emancipatory for women, whose participation in BJP politics is still predicated on traditional gender ideologies that tether women to their social roles in the home and family. Drawing on significant new data sources, Williams includes interviews with key BJP leaders, visual campaign materials, and an examination of major campaign events to construct an unmatched before-and-after view of India's watershed 2014 elections. Given that the BJP is one of the most dynamic religious/ethno-nationalist parties in the world at present, Williams' account of how it incorporated masses of women into its coalition is essential reading for scholars and students interested not just in India, but in the relationship between gender and right-wing populist politics globally.

A study of the networks of opera production and critical discourse that shaped Italian cultural identity during and after Unification. Opera’s role in shaping Italian identity has long fascinated both critics and scholars. Whereas the romance of the Risorgimento once spurred analyses of how individual works and styles grew out of and fostered specifically “Italian” sensibilities and modes of address, more recently scholars have discovered the ways in which opera has animated Italians’ social and cultural life in myriad different local contexts. In Networking Operatic Italy, Francesca Vella reexamines this much-debated topic by exploring how, where, and why opera traveled on the mid-nineteenth-century peninsula, and what this mobility meant for opera, Italian cities, and Italy alike. Focusing on the 1850s to the 1870s, Vella attends to opera’s encounters with new technologies of transportation and communication, as well as its continued dissemination through newspapers, wind bands, and singing human bodies. Ultimately, this book sheds light on the vibrancy and complexity of nineteenth-century Italian operatic cultures, challenging many of our assumptions about an often exoticized country.
