Tensions of Social History

Alessandro Stanziani

This book seeks to overcome the tension between ‘western’ and ‘non-western’ categories and tools in the study of global history, showing how most western approaches to the social sciences and history have developed through transnational and colonial interactions.Offering a transnational and global history of the main tools we have to understand the word and its transformations over the last three centuries, Tensions of Social History explores the construction of archives and historical memory, the making of statistics and their use in politics, the identification of social actors, and the emergence of key social theories. Providing key insights into how to write history and develop social sciences in the global era while avoiding eurocentrism and cultural exceptionalism, this ambitious book shows how global history is made of encounters rather than confrontations between civilizations.

At the turn of the 20th Century, the great cruise liner Virginia shuttles back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean, transporting passengers from old Europe to the New World. When an abandoned baby is found on board the sailors christen Novecento – 1900. The child is destined to a strange fate. Novecento will never leave the ship as long as he lives, yet he becomes the greatest jazz musician the world would never know. He only knows his music, which has a magical effect on everyone who hears. For six years before World War II, Tim Tooney played trumpet with him and Novecento gave him his story...Adapted for film in The Legend of 1900, this stage adaptation presented as a monologue, is a beautiful piece of theatre.

Machiavelli, Aristotle and Popular Republicanism

Machiavelli, Aristotle and Popular Republicanism

Machiavelli, Aristotle, and Popular Republicanism offers the first comprehensive study of the relationship between Machiavelli, Aristotle, and the Aristotelian tradition. Alessandro Mulieri shows that the conceptual language of Aristotelianism not only shaped some of Machiavelli’s most radical ideas but also played a key role in the development of his popular republican thought and his critique of classical republicanism.Employing an interdisciplinary approach that blends the history of political thought, political theory, and the history of philosophy, the book presents an original interpretation of Machiavelli’s engagement with five Aristotelian themes: the nature of political science, the relationship between virtue and fortune, the preservation of tyranny, the premodern notion of democracy as “the rule of the poor”, and the prudence of the multitude.By analysing a wide range of Latin and vernacular Aristotelian texts circulating in Machiavelli’s time, alongside works by several Renaissance thinkers, the book addresses longstanding challenges in interpreting Machiavelli’s relationship with ancient, medieval, and early modern sources, revealing the selective and profoundly strategic nature of his engagement with the premodern tradition.
Vico, Hegel and the Making of Modern Italy

Vico, Hegel and the Making of Modern Italy

Alessandro De Arcangelis

Embracing a transnational approach to 19th-century Italian intellectual history, this book examines the encounter and amalgamation of local and foreign philosophical traditions, chiefly represented by the thought of Giambattista Vico and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, showcasing their contribution to shaping a historical mindset that guided and legitimised Italians’ experiences of political change.Taking a revisionist stance, the author challenges the prevailing view that Italian thinkers passively adopted foreign ideas. Instead, they engaged critically with them, questioning their conceptual foundations and applicability to Italy’s political landscape. Vico, Hegel and the Making of Modern Italy reveals that Italian intellectuals sought cultural and political renewal, at both local and European levels, not through assimilation but through steadfast allegiance to a local strand of political thought inspired by Vico’s humanist historicism. The book ultimately explores how philosophical thought empowered Italian intellectuals to navigate the uncertainties, drama, and energy of the Risorgimento, underscoring the enduring significance of philosophical knowledge in shaping Italy’s political trajectory.

Radio transmissions have opened new frontiers allowing the exchange of information with remote units. From the first applications of telegraphy and radio broadcast, wireless transmissions have obtained a great success with the widespread diffusion of mobile communications. We live in the communication era, where any kind of information must be easy accessible to any user at any time. Mobile communication systems are the technical support that allows the realization of such concepts. With the term mobile communications we embrace a set of technologies for radio transmissions, network protocols, mobile terminals and network elements. The widespread diffusion of wireless communications is making national borders irrelevant in the design, delivery and billing of services, thus requiring international coordination of standardization efforts in order to evolve regional systems towards global ones. Parallel to the evolution of radio-mobile systems, we assist to the massive diffusion of Internet network and contents, thus allowing many users on the earth to be interconnected and to exchange any kind of information, data, images and so on.

The Order Has Been Carried Out

Alessandro Portelli

Palgrave Macmillan

nidottu
On March 24, 1944, Nazi occupation forces in Rome killed 335 unarmed civilians in retaliation for a partisan attack the day before. Portelli has crafted an eloquent, multi-voiced oral history of the massacre, of its background and its aftermath. The moving stories of the victims, the women and children who survived and carried on, the partisans who fought the Nazis, and the common people who lived through the tragedies of the war together paint a many-hued portrait of one of the world's most richly historical cities. The Order Has Been Carried Out powerfully relates the struggles for freedom under Fascism and Nazism, the battles for memory in post-war democracy, and the meanings of death and grief in modern society.
FORUM IULIUM L'area del Foro di Cesare alla luce delle campagne di scavo 2005-2008
The book is the result of three years of excavations (2005-2008) on the north-west side of Rome s Via dei Fori Imperiali, directly behind the Forum area. Contexts and landscapes extending from the Archaic period (6th century B.C.) to the time of Augustus have been discovered. Two wealthy houses from the Archaic period, destroyed most likely by the great fire of 390 B.C. and quickly rebuilt afterwards, were found in the area towards the south-eastern slope of the Capitoline Hill. They were subsequently dismantled during the construction of Caesar's Forum, which had occupied the entire area. This feature was originally 20 metres shorter than the one we know today and the many facets of its interesting story are fully discussed in these pages."
