California's central coast was fertile ground for hot rodding, and all motor sports in general, during the 1940s and 1950s. Hot Rodding in Santa Barbara County takes the reader back in time with a collection of remarkable photographs from the earliest days of the hot rod movement. This book includes images of the first drag strips in the country, rough-and-tumble jalopy racing, early road-racing action, and lots of great hot rods and customs. Follow local hot-rodders as they take trips to El Mirage dry lake and the world-famous salt flats at Bonneville, Utah, and visit a long-lost world as seen through photographs taken from the personal albums of people who contributed to the birth of a culture that would spread across the nation.
KARA & EMMA & BARBARA & MIRANDA

KARA & EMMA & BARBARA & MIRANDA

Ariel Stess; Branden Jacobs-Jenkins

YALE UNIVERSITY PRESS
2027
pokkari
In the eighteenth winner of the Yale Drama Prize, the lives of four very different women collide on a Christmas Eve in Santa Fe “A good playwright has to have some personal sense of what language is for and why we use it. Stess seems to me to revel in its power to convey and map our interiors, to be the medium through which we shape the story we tell ourselves and call our life.”—Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, from the Foreword In this occasionally off-kilter and deeply honest play about isolation, resilience, and the healing power of community, Ariel Stess intertwines the lives of four women from different generations and social strata in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Kara wakes up to find her husband and children missing. Twenty-one-year-old Emma runs away with a married man. Barbara’s ex-lover breaks into her home in the middle of the night. And the pipes in Miranda’s house burst. Through a tapestry of internal monologues and scenes, KARA & EMMA & BARBARA & MIRANDA follows the journeys of four women whose major life crises collide on Christmas Eve, leading them to accidentally help each other find a way forward. The play, the 2025 winner of the Yale Drama Prize, was chosen by competition judge Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, a Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright.
An American Diary 1857-8: Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon
‘I am one of the cracked people of the world,’ Barbara Leigh Smith Bodichon wrote of herself, ‘and I like to herd with the cracked … queer Americans, democrats, socialists, artists, poor devils or angels; and am never happy in an English genteel family life. I try to do it like other people, but I long always to be off on some wild adventure.’ Reformer, feminist, free-thinker, later to endow the founding of Girton College, Barbara Bodichon went to the United States on a marriage journey. First published in 1972, her journal of that trip, published in its original form for the first time, contains timely observation and incisive criticism of the American South before the Civil War, and gives a vivid portrait of a lively woman of her times, the friend of George Eliot and other leading figures of her age. This edition includes a fascinating introduction about the English visitor in the United States, from Dickens to Trollope. There is also a biographical study of Barbara Bodichon herself, giving an account of her life and of the causes, notably Women’s Rights, to which she devoted her time and energy.

100 Years of Flat Track Racing: The Barbara Fritchie Classic Frederick Maryland
There are instantly recognized names in the racing world. Isle of Mann, le Mans, Indianapolis, Ulster, Daytona... One name which is not so recognizable is Frederick. It's an event with a past that will surprise most of those who thought they knew the history of motorcycle racing. It's a race that has quietly gone on, decade after decade with little notice. This race began in 1921, distinguished from others by being promoted by the same people for generations and being sanctioned from that date till the present. Notably, this annual race, 100-years in age, takes place each year on American Independence Day. The Fritchie runs on the fourth of July, just as the very first documented motorcycle to race in Frederick did, in 1900. Flat Track racing originated in America on the many county and state fairground tracks located in hundreds of cities across the continent. A uniquely North American sport celebrated here annually on the equally unique American Independence Day. The Barbara Fritchie Classic is an unsung verse in racing history. A race whose significance and the true depth of its history, was never fully realized until now. The more than 380 illustrations are a major part of the story. Countless contributor's personal photos, vintage ads, posters, programs and period news reports bring the story to life. The names of those involved and how they connected to racing. The memories of past riders. Not simply "Who, What, When and Where" but as much as he has been able to, Ted Ellis has tried to explain "Why." To bring The Fritchie to life, from the first race to the most recent.
