Virtue and Economy

Virtue and Economy

Interest in Aristotelianism and in virtue ethics has been growing for half a century but as yet the strengths of the study of Aristotelian ethics in politics have not been matched in economics. This ground-breaking text fills that gap. Challenging the premises of neoclassical economic theory, the contributors take issue with neoclassicism’s foundational separation of values from facts, with its treatment of preferences as given, and with its consequent refusal to reason about final ends. The contrary presupposition of this collection is that ethical reasoning about human ends is essential for any sustainable economy, and that reasoning about economic goods should therefore be informed by reasoning about what is humanly and commonly good. Contributions critically engage with aspects of corporate capitalism, managerial power and neoliberal economic policy, and reflect on the recent financial crisis from the point of view of Aristotelian virtue ethics. Containing a new chapter by Alasdair MacIntyre, and deploying his arguments and conceptual scheme throughout, the book critically analyses the theoretical presuppositions and institutional reality of modern capitalism.

INTERRUPTED DREAMS is an entirely new look at the Titanic tragedy of 1912. A journey through the days before, during and after Titanic's maiden voyage, it is a heartfelt window into the lives of those suddenly faced with their own mortality. The story has haunted us for one hundred years, a tragedy from the last century of the previous millennium. This new historical novel transports you back to a bygone era and catapults you into the middle of the lives of a dozen people who lived or died because of a ship called Titanic. Fran oise is a spunky young French woman who meets the mysterious Malik in a Paris park. Together, they decide to find jobs on a Southampton steamer, but both are keeping damaging secrets from each other. The fatal accident interrupts their lives and perpetuates an impasse. Each moment from impact until the last lifeboat is launched is recounted, through the thoughts, words, and actions of crew and passengers. You will experience the gamut of emotions they felt, from exhilaration to despair, and learn the lesson they learned: the path to survival is strewn with heartbreaking loss. Only renewed faith, joined by undaunted compassion, can lead you back to your dreams.
The Unnatural World: The Race to Remake Civilization in Earth's Newest Age
A brilliant young environmental journalist argues that we must innovate and adapt to save planet Earth in this enlightening "trip around the world to meet people working out new ways for humanity to live as well as survive" (The New York Times Book Review). With the historical perspective of The Song of the Dodo and the urgency of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth, The Unnatural World chronicles a disparate band of unlikely heroes: an effervescent mad scientist who would fertilize the seas; a pigeon obsessive bent on bringing back the extinct; a low-level government functionary in China doing his best to clean up his city, and more. These scientists, billionaires, and ordinary people are all working toward saving the best home humanity is ever likely to have. What is the threat? It is us. In a time when a species dies out every ten minutes, when summers are getting hotter, winters colder, and oceans higher, some people still deny mankind's effect on the Earth. But all of our impacts on the planet have ushered in what qualifies as a new geologic epoch, thanks to global warming, mass extinction, and such technologies as nuclear weapons and plastics. "A futurist ray of hope amid the usual denial and despair" (Esquire), The Unnatural World examines the world we have created and analyzes the glimmers of light emerging from the efforts of incredible individuals seeking to change our future. Instead of a world without us, this history of the future shows how to become good gardeners, helping people thrive along with an abundance of plants, animals, all the exuberant profusion of life on Earth--a better world with us. The current era of humans need not be the end of the world--and "Biello describes both what we have done to alter our planet and what we should do in the future to ensure its habitability" (Scientific American).

The artist and entrepreneur Albrecht Durer lived in Germany in the early 1500s, when two storms were threatening the Holy Roman Empire. First, Suleiman the Magnificent and his army of Ottoman Turks were expanding from Constantinople to Vienna, the doorstep of Europe. Second, Martin Luther, a German monk and professor, wrote his Ninety-Five Theses identifying corruption within the Roman Catholic Church. This challenged the authority of both Emperor Charles V and Pope Leo X, who responded by accusing Luther of heresy. Albrecht Durer influenced art and media throughout Europe as strongly as Martin Luther influenced people's views of life, death, and their relationship with God. Durer's art and writing reveal how this creative and thoughtful man responded to the changes offered by Luther. Why was Durer so attracted to Luther's writings? Why would he risk being accused of being a heretic? Both of these men inspired changes in art, religion, and politics that still underlie the foundation of today's social structures and Western culture. ""Stacey Bieler's beautifully (and intelligently) illustrated study of Albrecht Durer shows convincingly why she is such an important guide to the reformation era. Her text and well-chosen Durer prints and paintings explain with particular clarity why Luther became such an important figure in the artist's life. It is a book to broaden historical understanding but also to delight the eye."" --Mark Noll, McAnaney Professor of History Emeritus at the University Notre Dame Stacey Bieler, an independent historian, also wrote ""Patriots"" or ""Traitors""? A History of American-Educated Chinese Students (2004) and coedited (with Carol Hamrin) the three-volume set about Chinese Christians called Salt and Light (Pickwick, 2009-2011).
