The Tar Baby

The Tar Baby

Bryan Wagner

PRINCETON UNIVERSITY PRESS

sidottu
A richly nuanced cultural history of an enigmatic and controversial folktale Perhaps the best-known version of the tar baby story was published in 1880 by Joel Chandler Harris in Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings, and popularized in Song of the South, the 1946 Disney movie. Other versions of the story, however, have surfaced in many other places throughout the world, including Nigeria, Brazil, Corsica, Jamaica, India, and the Philippines. The Tar Baby offers a fresh analysis of this deceptively simple story about a fox, a rabbit, and a doll made of tar and turpentine, tracing its history and its connections to slavery, colonialism, and global trade. Bryan Wagner explores how the tar baby story, thought to have originated in Africa, came to exist in hundreds of forms on five continents. Examining its variation, reception, and dispersal over time, he argues that the story is best understood not merely as a folktale but as a collective work in political philosophy. Circulating at the same time and in the same places as new ideas about property and politics developed in colonial law and political economy, the tar baby comes to embody an understanding of the interlocking processes by which custom was criminalized, slaves were captured, and labor was bought and sold. Compellingly argued and ambitious in scope, the book concludes with twelve versions of the story transcribed from various cultures in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The Case against Education

The Case against Education

Bryan Caplan

Why we need to stop wasting public funds on educationDespite being immensely popular--and immensely lucrative—education is grossly overrated. In this explosive book, Bryan Caplan argues that the primary function of education is not to enhance students' skill but to certify their intelligence, work ethic, and conformity—in other words, to signal the qualities of a good employee. Learn why students hunt for easy As and casually forget most of what they learn after the final exam, why decades of growing access to education have not resulted in better jobs for the average worker but instead in runaway credential inflation, how employers reward workers for costly schooling they rarely if ever use, and why cutting education spending is the best remedy.Caplan draws on the latest social science to show how the labor market values grades over knowledge, and why the more education your rivals have, the more you need to impress employers. He explains why graduation is our society's top conformity signal, and why even the most useless degrees can certify employability. He advocates two major policy responses. The first is educational austerity. Government needs to sharply cut education funding to curb this wasteful rat race. The second is more vocational education, because practical skills are more socially valuable than teaching students how to outshine their peers.Romantic notions about education being "good for the soul" must yield to careful research and common sense—The Case against Education points the way.
Ultimate Questions

Ultimate Questions

We human beings had no say in existing--we just opened our eyes and found ourselves here. We have a fundamental need to understand who we are and the world we live in. Reason takes us a long way, but mystery remains. When our minds and senses are baffled, faith can seem justified--but faith is not knowledge. In Ultimate Questions, acclaimed philosopher Bryan Magee provocatively argues that we have no way of fathoming our own natures or finding definitive answers to the big questions we all face. With eloquence and grace, Magee urges us to be the mapmakers of what is intelligible, and to identify the boundaries of meaningfulness. He traces this tradition of thought to his chief philosophical mentors--Locke, Hume, Kant, and Schopenhauer--and shows why this approach to the enigma of existence can enrich our lives and transform our understanding of the human predicament. As Magee puts it, "There is a world of difference between being lost in the daylight and being lost in the dark." The crowning achievement to a distinguished philosophical career, Ultimate Questions is a deeply personal meditation on the meaning of life and the ways we should live and face death.

Reimagining higher education around the world: lessons from the creation of eight new colleges and universities in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North AmericaHigher education is perpetually in crisis, buffeted by increasing costs and a perceived lack of return on investment, campus culture that is criticized for stifling debate on controversial topics, and a growing sense that the liberal arts are outmoded and irrelevant. Some observers even put higher education on the brink of death. The New Global Universities offers a counterargument, telling the story of educational leaders who have chosen not to give up on higher education but to reimagine it. The book chronicles the development and launch of eight innovative colleges and universities in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and North America, describing the combination of intellectual courage, entrepreneurial audacity, and adaptive leadership needed to invent educational institutions today. The authors, both academic leaders who have been involved in launching ventures similar to the ones described, offer a unique inside perspective on these efforts. Bryan Penprase and Noah Pickus show how the founders of new colleges and universities establish distinctive brands in a sector dominated by centuries-old institutions, secure creative sources of funding, attract stellar faculty and students, and design appealing curriculums and campuses—all while managing tradeoffs and setbacks, balancing local needs and global aspirations, and wrestling with challenges to academic freedom. These new educational institutions include two universities in Asia and the Middle East built by well-established American parent institutions, others in Africa and North America that offer holistic reform from the ground up and leverage new technologies to lower costs, and still others that adapted the American liberal arts model to Asian and African contexts. Their experiences offer lessons for future founders of new universities—and for those who want to renew and rejuvenate existing ones.

For all persons seriously concerned about the destruction of natural environments in the contemporary world, this book presents a comprehensive rationale for preserving wild species and ecosystems. Bryan G. Norton appeals most centrally to "transformative value," the power of human contacts with wild species to transform and uplift the human spirit. Until now species preservationists have found a theoretical basis for their policies in the "demand" value of wild species for fulfilling certain narrowly defined human needs or in controversial and badly understood proposals about the "intrinsic" values of species. This work examines such rationales and diverges from them by pointing to new sources of value for wild species: they have worth because they can transform human values. Because of the central role of biological diversity in environmental concerns, the book also provides a fresh perspective on environmental ethics more generally. Why Preserve Natural Variety? is sponsored by the Center for Philosophy and Public Policy at the University of Maryland, as was The Preservation of Species: The Value of Biological Diversity, which was edited by Professor Norton. Originally published in 1986. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. "Fitting in is a subject we've all had to deal with, and to some extent, we deal with on a daily basis. You know, it's that thing that determines whether or not you're going to hang with the new guy or girl. Or that thing that determines whether or not you're going to lie about your age, where you live, who you hang with, how much money you make, how often you work out and if your breasts are real in conversation. The list could go on and on but I'm sure you get the point. It's something we all face and feel pressured by society, peers, religious sects and ourselves alike to make decisions on every day. Even on a more serious note, "fitting in" is the very dynamic that pressures some of us to hide our real issues and starve ourselves of the healing or relief we could get if we weren't too busy finding our fit...But what if there was a different option? What if we didn't spend our entire lives ensuring that we fit in, making our home among the crowds? What if we could create A New Home?" Writer, producer, artist, coach and inspirational/motivational speaker Bryan Pharr takes us on a deep, retrospective and introspective journey ranging from his childhood until life today that invokes the question, "Will I live a life of significance or one of safety?"...FILLED with experience-gained wisdom and revelatory insights, "A New Home" dares it's readers to ask themselves the hard questions concerning their need to fit in - "How far will you go?" and, "Will all the efforts you've made be worth it in the end?"This perspective-shifting discourse is a MUST READ, and through its hard-hitting yet relatable, tear-jerking and even, at points, comical nature, may prove to be more of a life-changing event than just a good "Sunday morning read".

Every true Christian has, at some point in their faith, experienced the conviction that comes from the Holy Spirit. It is this conviction from the Holy Spirit that propelled us into right relationship with the Holy Father when we first admitted our sin and accepted Jesus as Lord. It is a conviction that leads us to Christ and away from sin. Convicted Christianity has taken on the role of reminding the reader that conviction through faith submitted to the Lord is different from faith submitted to the Christian culture. Convicted Christianity makes this attempt by showing the power, might, and authority found within our massive and Living God, while also reminding us of how God has individually called us to accept both Him and His mission to spread His Good News. It points to the importance of being actively obedient to God's Word in an unashamed way that stems from--and results in--love Throughout this workbook, genuine hearts will truly be challenged to examine and measure the authenticity of their faith and make a response to what they see in the mirror as shown through God's Word.

What are midlife crises like for members of a heavy metal band? If you're Pretty Boy, it means an opioid addiction and theological discussions with a macaw. For Rex, it means having a pig destroy your house and aiding a robber in stealing all of your own furniture. The concert of their careers is on the horizon, but it is uncertain if they'll ever make it there. The Parrot and the Pig explores the lives of four boys who live in a world of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, and who are crossing the threshold into middle age when the sex entails group colonoscopies, the drugs are all prescription medication, and the rock shows are met with threats of violence. As they encounter frequent hallucinations, livid parents, and terrorist allegations, only one thing is certain: The real show is happening before they reach the stage.
Digital Cmo's Guide to Marketing Measurement: Think Like a Submariner for Operational Success
Early in my career I had the honor to serve in the Navy on fast attack submarines. At the time, submarines were focused on intelligence gathering, strategic deterrence, and preparing to fight WWIII against the Soviets. To accomplish such missions, submariners had to operate fairly complex machinery in a hostile environment with a crew made up of personnel in their twenties. On the surface, marketing and being a submariner are not exactly similar. But as a new digital CMO at a purely inbound B2B-driven software company, the more I dug into the problem of building the operating framework for my marketing team, the more I found myself relying on the many lessons I learned as a submariner. This book attempts to simply lay out the processes and measurements required to operate a real-time, high-velocity lead generation system for B2B marketers. Included are the metrics down to suggestions about the structure of the marketing organization and even the operational meeting cadence. Some may find the detail too much for a CMO. But I will propose that CMOs must have a command of these details if any measure of their success is based on lead generation. Without this level of knowledge, a CMO would lack the understanding needed as he or she asks the tough questions required of a digital marketing organization.

This is a book for thinkers, students, teachers, and parents who love science and math in the form of activities only using common and basic items. For example you can measure the energy of the sun with a cup of water, a thermometer, and a watch. Each activity gives the purpose, the materials list, the procedure, the data tables, the formulae, and the conclusion to follow. One has to obtain the needed materials, if a student/child have permission and supervision, and a spirit of scientific curiosity to set forth on the adventure of science. All activities involve measurements and calculations to reach conclusions - which is the heart of the scientific method in practice. The range of activities spans most of physics, but looks at chemistry, astronomy, and several types of math too. The slide rule is encouraged ( and a paper template one is supplied ) to do the math with plenty of directions on its use and why it should be used to teach numeracy skills today. To take this quest one has to be the scientist, the researcher, the experimenter, the mathematician - in sum be the inquisitive pioneer.Table of ContentsCh.I Why bring the Slide Rule back to the Classroom today?
