Marriage and Divorce Records from Maine Freewill Baptist Publications, 1819-1851
The Freewill Baptist denomination began in New Durham, New Hampshire in 1780 and spread with the expanding population throughout the states of the Northeast and Midwest, as well as into Canada. It is not often that you will find a collection of marriage records, such as those gathered here, that cover such a vast portion of the United States: Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, Tennessee, Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Territory, California, Oregon Territory, as well as New Brunswick and Nova Scotia and what was known as Lower Canada, consisting of Canada East (Quebec) and Canada West (Ontario). The majority of entries, however, come from New England, New York, and Lower Canada. As an example, in Maine many marriages were not officially recorded until the 1830s; it was not required by law until 1892. The state of New Hampshire has even fewer sources for marriage records than Maine (i.e., Maine has county commissioner marriage records, which apparently New Hampshire does not). The entries in this book were abstracted from the Morning Star, published in Limerick, Maine, from 1826-1833 and Dover, New Hampshire, from 1833-1851; the Maine Freewill Baptist Repository of Limerick, Maine, 1843-1851; and the Religious Informer, published in Andover, New Hampshire, and Enfield, New Hampshire, from 1819 and 1825. Entries are listed alphabetically in the form of two indexes; one for grooms and one for brides. A typical entry includes the name of bride and groom, place of residence, date of marriage, place of marriage, name of the elder or other official who performed the ceremony, and a citation that identifies the publication and issue date. Thus, researchers with access to the papers in the original or microfilm form may use this volume as an index and refer to the newspapers for additional data. An alphabetical list of elders/ministers is also provided, naming the dates and towns in which they served.
Colonial Pioneers of Virginia

The ecclesiastical history of colonial Virginia, impacted by ongoing political and economic strife, had a profound influence on the development of the United States. Surviving religious and political persecutions imposed on them by the Church of England, religious dissenters played a significant role in shaping the history of Virginia. These narratives, primarily based on less well-known religious leaders, highlight their efforts to reform and revitalize society. Accounts of these religious pioneers include: Abraham Sall , Alexander Joyce, David Barrow, John Dickins, Sarah Winston Syme Henry, and Thomas Smith. Without their efforts to promote religious tolerance, establish their denominations on the frontier, and challenge the norms of their commonly-accepted culture, Virginia would have turned out very differently. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.

The narratives portrayed in this book represent the life stories of various pioneers from eighteenth-century Virginia. Their struggles and achievements are not well known; nevertheless, they played a crucial role. From poor immigrants, religious dissenters, and the landed gentry, they all changed Virginia history.Pioneer accounts include: Charles Chriswell, Michael Kelly, Nicholas Meriwether, The Queen of Pamunkey, Thomas Joyce, Thomas Stanley, William Witcher, and Sir Francis Wyatt. All of these pioneers, in their own way, contributed to the culture of colonial Virginia. For better or for worse, they either inspired hope or planted fear. In some cases, it was both. The history of Virginia was forever shaped by these pioneers and their decisions. An index to full-names, places and subjects adds to the value of this work.

High Level Synthesis of ASICs under Timing and Synchronization Constraints
Computer-aided synthesis of digital circuits from behavioral level specifications offers an effective means to deal with increasing complexity of digital hardware design. High Level Synthesis of ASICs Under Timing and Synchronization Constraints addresses both theoretical and practical aspects in the design of a high-level synthesis system that transforms a behavioral level description of hardware to a synchronous logic-level implementation consisting of logic gates and registers. High Level Synthesis of ASICs Under Timing and Synchronization Constraints addresses specific issues in applying high-level synthesis techniques to the design of ASICs. This complements previous results achieved in synthesis of general-purpose and signal processors, where data-path design is of utmost importance. In contrast, ASIC designs are often characterized by complex control schemes, to support communication and synchronization with the environment. The combined design of efficient data-path control-unit is the major contribution of this book. Three requirements are important in modeling ASIC designs: concurrency, external synchronization, and detailed timing constraints. The objective of the research work presented here is to develop a hardware model incorporating these requirements as well as synthesis algorithms that operate on this hardware model. The contributions of this book address both the theory and the implementation of algorithm for hardware synthesis.
Science and Technology Policy in Interdependent Economies
Economic policy debates have devoted increasing attention to the design and implementation of policies to aid the growth of high-technology firms and industries. In the United States this focus on `technology policy' has been influenced by similar debates and policy experiments in other industrial economies, notably Japan and Western Europe. The domestic U.S. debate over support for technology development and national competitiveness has been hampered by two major conceptual flaws -- the demand for immediate economic results from basic research and considering national technology policies independent of developments in the international economy. This volume addresses these deficiencies in the analysis of technology policy by examining a number of issues faced by managers and public officials in industrial and industrializing economies that are now linked closely through international flows of goods, capital, and technology. The book lays out an analytical framework for the study of national policies towards technology and science. In addition, the book addresses the complex issues raised by interdependence among the public and private institutions governing the creation, commercialization, and adoption of new technology in different national economies. Finally, the book reviews the development of two global high-technology industries: aerospace and semiconductor components.
The Modern Olympics

The Modern Olympics

David C. Young

Johns Hopkins University Press

pokkari
According to most accounts, the man solely responsible for reviving the modern Olympic Games was Baron Pierre de Coubertin. Now, in The Modern Olympics, David C. Young challenges this view, revealing that Coubertin was only the last and most successful of many contributors to the dream of the modern Olympics. Based on thirteen years of research in previously neglected documents, Young reconstructs the fascinating and almost unknown history of the Olympic revival movement in the nineteenth century, including two long-forgotten Olympiads-one in London in 1866 and another in Athens in 1870. He traces the idea for the modern Olympics back to an obscure Greek poet in 1833 and follows the sinuous tale to a small village in England, where W. P. Brookes held local Olympiads, founded the British Olympic Committee, and told Coubertin about his vision of an international Olympics. Coubertin's main contribution to the founding of the modern Olympics was the zeal he brought to transforming an idea that had evolved over decades into the reality of Olympiad I and all the Olympic Games held thereafter.
J. Robert Oppenheimer and the American Century

J. Robert Oppenheimer and the American Century

David C. Cassidy

David C. Cassidy's celebrated biography is more than the life story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the brilliant physicist who served as scientific director for the Manhattan Project. It also tells the hidden story of the political and social forces that shaped the world in the 20th century, when the rise of American science contributed mightily to the country's emergence as a dominant power in world affairs. Cassidy explores that strong relationship in the captivating story of the rise and fall of one of America's greatest scientists. As head of the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer led the country's successful effort to build the first atom bomb during World War II. In 1954 the government-with the United States embroiled in the Cold War-stripped him of his security clearance amid allegations that he consorted with communists. In rich detail Cassidy places this personal story of public disgrace within the larger narrative of the rise of science in America.

Eco-Impacts and the Greening of Postmodernity is one of the first books to use cultural studies to reach a deeper understanding of the significance of the ecological issues in our lives. This groundbreaking book contrasts the visible impact of the ecological crises on popular culture with the less discernible academic responses. It explores such vital questions as: Can nature survive? How do academic disciplines engage with environmental crises? And, how do we map sustainable futures? The authors, Tom Jagtenberg and David McKie, bring a body of relevant literature into the debate--that stems from both cultural and environmental issues--as well as their own multidisciplinary perspectives on the subject. Eco-Impacts and the Greening of Postmodernity provides a one-of-a-kind analysis of the impacts of the present environmental condition on culture. This volume's focus will be of special interest to students and professionals in cultural studies, popular culture, communication, and environmental studies.

Since the early 1980s, universities in the United States have greatly expanded their patenting and licensing activities. The Congressional Joint Economic Committee, among other authorities, have argued that this surge contributed to the economic boom of the 1990s. And, many observers have attributed this trend to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980. Using quantitative analysis and detailed case studies, this book tests that conventional wisdom and assesses the effects of the Act, examining the diverse channels through which commercialization has occurred over the 20th century and since the passage of the Act.

Although known primarily for his illustrations, murals, and portraits, Charles Banks Wilson things of himself chiefly as a lithographer. ""Lithography,"" he says, ""is what made an artist of me."" The 118 lithographs collected here, each reproduced from an original print in the artist's own collection, represent fifty years of experience in the medium.True to the American regionalist tradition that influenced him, Wilson has used his own surroundings as subject matter, producing an intensely personal record of his own time and place-an Oklahoma of varied landscapes and of farmers, cowboys, miners, and Indians. The prints reproduced here are a representative sample of Wilson's long and prolific career in lithography. Well represented are the Indian subjects for which he is most famous, including the entire Tel Little Indians series, the Plains Madonna, and portraits from the Search for the Purebloods series. Several rural landscapes, immensely popular among collectors, are included, as are prints based on Wilson's best work in other media: book illustrations (of J. Frank Dobie's The Mustangs, for example), murals (the Oklahoma State Capitol murals, for instance), and portraits (including Will Rogers, Jim Thorpe, and Sequoyah).Design and printing techniques are inseparable components of stone lithography, and Wilson's works embody the skills of both artist and craftsman. His descriptions of the lithographic process are of a discipline demanding patience, foresight, dexterity, and the sheer physical strength to manipulate a printing stone that may weigh as much as two hundred pounds. The first published collection of Charles Banks Wilson's lithographs, this unique, personal documentary includes a biographical sketch of the artist, annotations for each print, and a description of stone lithography by the artist himself. It will be judged an important contribution to contemporary art studies, and all collectors and admirers of stone lithographs, particularly those of Charles Bands Wilson, will find it a valuable reference.

Less than thirty years after Lewis and Clark completed their epic journey, Prince Maximilian of Wied - a German naturalist - and his entourage set off on their own daring expedition across North America. Accompanying the prince on this 1832-34 voyage was Swiss artist Karl Bodmer, whose drawings and watercolors - designed to illustrate Maximilian's journals - now rank among the great treasures of nineteenth-century American art. This lavishly illustrated book juxtaposes Bodmer's landscape images with modern-day photographs of the same views, allowing readers to see what has changed, and what seems unchanged, since the time Maximilian and Bodmer made their storied trip up the Missouri River. To discover how the areas Bodmer depicted have changed over time, photographer Robert M. Lindholm and anthropologist W. Raymond Wood made several trips over a period of years, from 1985 to 2002, to locate and record the same sites - all the way from Boston Harbor, where Maximilian and Bodmer began their journey, to Fort McKenzie, in modern-day western Montana. Pairing sixty-seven Bodmer works side by side with Lindholm's photographs of the same sites, this volume uses the comparison of old and new images to reveal alterations through time - and the encroachment of a built environment - across diverse landscapes. Karl Bodmer's America Revisited is at once a tribute to the artistic achievements of a premier landscape artist and a photographer who followed in his footsteps, and a valuable record of America's ever-changing environment.

The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns, 1880-2006

A new understanding of what really matters in our electionsPrevailing wisdom holds that the pivot of American political campaigns has shifted over the past century from the parties to the candidate. David C. W. Parker challenges this conventional notion, arguing that campaigns center on neither orientation but are, more simply, resource dependent. The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns examines the historical development of party, interest-group, and candidate power in the American congressional election process. Parker takes a broad view of the electoral terrain, considering both primary and general elections, and discerns distinct patterns emerging during the twentieth century. He proposes a new theoretical model based on the need for candidates to accumulate enough financing and reputation to compete successfully, showing the importance of the rules governing this process.Analyzing case studies of elections over more than a century, Parker argues that campaign behavior boils down to the determination to gather the resources needed to win. He shows that changes in electoral rules over time have affected the strategies candidates and parties use to accumulate campaign resources. He also suggests how the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act of 2002 may influence the relationships among political actors and affect the quality of democratic discourse.Unlike many studies of the election process, this book provides a broad understanding of why candidates, parties, and interest groups pursue particular strategies. The Power of Money in Congressional Campaigns is a corrective analysis of how candidates campaign, and how Americans choose their leaders.

Drug Politics is an enlightening new book by a man who knows this disturbing and dangerous subject. A former United States ambassador to Peru, David C. Jordan has testified before the U.S. Senate and House Foreign Relations committees and has consulted with various government security organizations. His account of government protection of the criminal elements intertwined with local and global politics challenges many of the assumptions of current drug policies. Using examples from South America, Mexico, Russia, and the United States, Jordan shows that the narcotics problem is not merely one of supply and demand.Jordan argues that many national and international financial systems are dependent on cash from money laundering, and some governments are far more involved in protecting than in combating criminal cartels.
