Exploring the nature of utilitarian texts in English transmitted from the later Middle Ages to c. 1650, this volume considers textual and material strategies for the presentation and organisation of written knowledge and information during the period. In particular, it investigates the relationship between genre and material form in Anglophone written knowledge and information, with specific reference to that which is usually classified as practical or 'utilitarian'. Carrie Griffin examines textual and material evidence to argue for the disentangling of hitherto mixed genres and forms, and the creation of 'new' texts, as unexplored effects of the arrival of the printing press in the late fifteenth century. Griffin interrogates the texts at the level of generic markers, frameworks and structures, and studies transmission and dissemination in print, the nature of and attitudes to printed books, and the audiences they reached, in order to determine shifting attitudes to books and texts. Learning and Information from Manuscript to Print makes a significant contribution to the study of so-called non-literary textual genres and their transmission, circulation and reception in manuscript and in early modern printed books.

Human rights is an empowering framework for understanding and addressing justice issues at local, domestic, and international levels. This book combines US-based case studies with examples from other regions of the world to explore important human rights themes – the equality, universality, and interdependence of human rights, the idea of international crimes, strategies of human rights change, and justice and reconciliation in the aftermath of human rights violations. From Flint and Minneapolis to Xinjiang and Mt. Sinjar, this book challenges a wide variety of readers – students, professors, activists, human rights professionals, and concerned citizens – to consider how human rights apply to their own lives and equip them to be changemakers in their own communities.

This pathbreaking book uncovers the important, underappreciated role of armed opposition groups turned political parties in shaping long-term patterns of politics after war. Based on an empirically grounded and theoretically informed retrospective on nearly 30 years of post-conflict democratic state-building efforts, it examines whether this practice has contributed to peace and finds that engaging post-rebel parties in electoral politics has proven to be a viable long-term strategy for bringing political stability, that disparate post-rebel parties from different political contexts invest heavily in electoral politics, and that few post-rebel parties actively seek return to civil conflict as a solution after becoming a political party. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students, and practitioners in democracy, governance, elections, political parties, post-conflict peacebuilding, and more broadly to international relations, comparative politics, and regional politics.

Combining social therapeutics with the practice of coaching, this book guides coaches and mental health professionals in how to coach groups and couples using this innovative method.Drawing from the authors’ combined 50 years of experience, Social Therapeutic Coaching: A Practical Guide to Group and Couples Work empowers practitioners to break away from focusing on individual change to focusing on groups and their emotional growth. Early chapters touch on the history of coaching and powerful discoveries of social therapeutics before diving into how to lead a social therapeutic group. Sackett and Dabby explain how to incorporate the concept of human relationality into coaching sessions, demonstrating how it extends group work beyond assembling like-minded individuals with similar goals into bringing together diverse people with diverse issues that they want to work on and grow around. It also brings a fresh lens to working with couples, in which the focus is on discovering what "the relationship" needs, rather than trying to get individuals to compromise, change or work towards a preconceived shared vision for an end goal.Written in an accessible style and filled with extensive case studies and examples, Social Therapeutic Coaching provides a powerful toolkit for coaches, counselors, psychotherapists, social workers, HR and talent development professionals, community-based leaders and social entrepreneurs.

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLERAs gripping and unforgettable as Fredrik Backman's Bear Town and Kristin Hannah's The Great Alone, this haunting novel digs into the impact of a fatal avalanche on a small BC mountain town, as seen through the eyes of those who survive the tragedy. "Heart-rending and heart-stopping." --Alix Ohlin, author of Dual Citizens"...lays bare the truths of mental illness...epically unforgettable." --Jen Sookfong Lee, author of Superfan"Deeply raw...Insightful and unsparing, this is an important book." --Zoe Whittall, author of The Best Kind of People Content Note: this is an important book and a powerful depiction of extreme Bipolar disorder. It deals with sensitive subject matter, and we encourage readers to take care of themselves and their mental health while reading. Last Winter is the story of a child who might not survive the heartbreak of her father's death and a mother who struggles to both parent and manage her grief in the grips of a Bipolar crisis. Fiona and Gus's marriage has veered off course. Fiona's mental health is shaky at best, and is now further strained under the weight of a transgression that she would like to both forget and repeat. Gus, a pro snowboarder turned backcountry guide, is exhausted by Fiona's mood swings and her ambivalence about their relationship, but mostly by the impact of her erratic behaviour on their eight-year-old daughter, Ruby. Ruby loves them both, but has a much closer relationship with her father, and has stopped talking in the face of the tensions between her parents. In the midst of this marital crisis, Gus takes Ruby's class on an overnight trip into the wilderness, where Ruby is one of only two children to survive the avalanche that kills the others, including her beloved father. While Fiona's mental health is unravelled further by grief, Ruby is flattened by Gus's loss. After the search ends with no sign of her father, Ruby is determined to find him herself, using the survival skills he taught her and believing that he must still be alive. Her trek back into the snow sets off events that stretches her own resourcefulness and her mother's fragile coping skills to the breaking point. Atmospheric and deftly told with an economy of words and a finely tuned gaze on the small moments that build up to an inexorable and shocking end, Last Winter is a contemporary drama that will grip readers both for the story and for the vibrant portrayal of the complexities of family life.
